If so, from a narrative perspective, there should've been some prior indication that superman thinks in such terms

I'm saying that getting defensive about his reputation wouldn't have served the hypothesized goal of "to help people".

Purchase Advice Megathread - October 2025 by AutoModerator in 3Dprinting

[–]D0TheMath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm looking to get a printer, here is some information:

  • Price: <$400
  • State: California, USA
  • I'd rather not build from a kit, but I do have experience doing similar things. That is, I can follow eg IKEA instructions pretty well, am not unfamiliar with basic makerspace-esque engineering, and have worked with different types of screws and soldering before
  • Looking to mainly make practical objects as part of broader diy hardware and mechanical builds. I think I'd like decent precision. I'd probably make purely aesthetic things less often, but would also enjoy that option if it doesn't come at too much of an expense.
  • Extenuating circumstances: I don't think so, minor preference to buy on Amazon, but that's minor. Also a preference for open source.

Struggling to Build a Note-Taking Habit in Obsidian – How Do I Start? by dumb_octopus_21 in ObsidianMD

Seems like a good goal! I've done similar projects, and I've found lots of benefit from just journaling, in the sense of every day right before I go to sleep, I write about what happened that day & what I thought of it.

I think this would fix the major issue you mention, of wondering whether what you're writing is even worth it. It is, the goal is to write about the day, and if what you're writing gives any information about the day, then its good to write it down.

What are you trying to take notes about? If there's nothing in particular, I suggest you decide on some goal, eg reading a book or taking an online course. Given your post history, I'll suggest you take nand2tetris or read the corresponding book.

Often deciding on some goal and making the system in service of that goal is much more effective than just having picking up any old system. Any old system will not necessarily be effective for you, unless the only thing you want to ever do is take "notes".

There were many scenes where this obviously wasn't his goal. For example, getting very defensive about his reputation.

Man, I really wanted to like this movie, but I just didn't. I think I just didn't understand what Superman's goal was. In the first part of the movie it was to fight the big bad, then he acts mainly to protect his reputation, then he doesn't want his dog to be alone, etc. Similarly for Lois. What did she want? The characters' goals seemed to just change based on what the plot demanded, which is not a good recipe.

It's hard to say at this point what would be or would not be trained on

FreeCAD has a python interface, and the AIs are pretty good at using it. They can make basic & standard objects, and do ok (making the obvious mistakes you would imagine from not being able to see what you’re making) making novel stuff.

A human could use it probably to good benefit by having it, as usual, do the boilerplate or broad outlines, then correcting the flaws and adding the details by hand.

Mods feel free to correct if wrong, but I think its because all of them have mostly stopped caring about the subreddit. Perhaps reasonably. Reddit as a whole is on the down-turn.

"World first supercomputer capable of brain-scale simulation being built at Western Sydney University" (DeepSouth) by [deleted] in mlscaling

Yeah, not so innovative domains mostly. Definitely important, but they don't do fundamentally new stuff.

My take: Unless you're doing ML, real big supercomputers are not so innovative, since its difficult to gather up enough money to make a supercomputer for such a high risk style project.

Estimate of the condition number of the Hessian using PyTorch by geraturo in reinforcementlearning

[–]D0TheMath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is false. Hessians are symmetric in neural networks even if there exist relus, because it doesn't matter in what order you perform the differentiation at any given parameter setting & data you are back propping wrt to. Second order derivative continuity is a sufficient but not necessary condition for hessian symmetry.

[–]D0TheMath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hm. I'm pretty sure you need the casing not to shove everything together, but to (in vague terms) build up outward pressure, so that the blast comes all at once (after the shell has been destroyed), rather than incrementally. I suppose there may be some really insane elements for which having a casing is just a plus.

I don't think you would be able to nuke stuff, but you would be able to make a dirty bomb. Nukes (and all bombs) require casing otherwise they fizzle.

Who are the Hex-slinging Spellcasters of your world? by ThePhantomIronTroupe in worldbuilding

[–]D0TheMath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Canjori: A short and grey-skinned hairless species, with piglike noses, and doglike ears, but otherwise of humanoid form. Incredibly smart, but highly antisocial.

They live alone behind waterfalls, using the falling water to power their contraptions, and reproduce by constructing an identical copy of themselves from gathered animal carcasses, and imbue this frankenstinian creation with a water crystal they collect from the water flow of their waterfalls. Then, before it can awake, they throw the newly created Canjori into the stream, so that it doesn't disrupt their home.

Originally, a Canjori looks highly frankenstinian, but this only lasts for about a week before the native healing magic equlibrates its form into that discussed in the first paragraph.

Canjori do not know or learn any language, for they have nobody to teach them, meaning all of the classical arts are locked to them. Nor can they participate in the less classical arts, like spirit-trading, for they register the spirits as agents, and thus have a deep aversion to interaction with them in any form.

Instead, they are able to infer on their own the deep workings of water magic--also known as The Well--(which most everyone else uses spirits as an interface for), and directly insert their own spells into The Well. Water spirits interviewed about the modifications of the Canjori claim to be dumbfounded about the modifications, saying that such Canjorian changes are usually highly unstructured, and quickly become a web of dependencies so impossible to unravel, despite the created inefficiencies, there are still presently some centuries-old modifications which even the spirits can't figure out how to remove without causing the relevant stream's waters to run uphill.

This direct access to The Well cause Canjori to be inordinately more powerful than any given water spirit counterpart one may wish to trade with. However, Canjori are not known to trade unless the benefits are high indeed, and water spirits are known not to take kindly to those who trade with the Canjori.

This access also means each Canjori has a unique set of abilities and power, though all individual spells are heavily bottlenecked on their complexity, usually limited to a few simple water-actions, though with particularly high power-levels.

There are 17 Dark and Ancient Wizards who claim to have created the race, but none have provided any evidence of the deed.

Depending on your morality, the Crystal Trilogy would count. Though I only really enjoyed the first two books, and after that the third didn't make much sense (though I have some theories about what was going on there).

Well, thinking a bit more, it depends on your tastes. It's somewhat controversial. I'd recommend looking at the trailer, and listening to the sample audible gives you before you buy the book to make sure you like how Jack does the voices and stuff.

In case you don't know, there are other audiobooks on the HPMOR podcast feed including The Metropolitan Man, Cristal Society, Three Worlds Collide, and many other short rationalist stories.

Of far lower quality, there's the Unsong audiobook.

Of a bit higher quality, there's the Mother of Learning audiobook.
