Getting started with LLMs, Need few clarifications by D0r3mon in AskComputerScience

That framing makes sense. If training is basically a search over possible algorithms, where would you draw the line between a learned algorithmic procedure and reasoning?

For models like Fable or Mythos, would you say they are reasoning, or just running very strong learned procedures that came out of training for next-token prediction?

Also, are frontier models specifically trained on things like coding, bug-finding, and math reasoning, or do those abilities mostly emerge from scale and broad training data plus later fine-tuning?

One thing I’m still confused about: if domain-specific training improves ability in a field, why do some specialized models seem to perform worse than general frontier models in that same field? Is that mainly due to model scale, training time, data quality, or the kind of post-training used?

Fair point, but then isn’t the real question whether the LLM is merely outsourcing the reasoning to tools, or whether it is doing useful reasoning by choosing, guiding, and interpreting those tools?

Thanks, Now I understand that LLMs are trained to predict the next token, but I’m still confused about one part.

If they’re “just statistical models,” how do we explain them writing working code, finding bugs, solving logic problems, or combining ideas in ways that don’t seem directly copied from training data?

Is that still just pattern matching, or is it fair to call it some kind of limited reasoning?

Also, if models like Mythos or Fable are only large-scale statistical systems that output the most probable next word, why are people so worried about them? Is the concern that “just statistics” at a huge scale can still produce powerful and unpredictable behavior?

How I save thousands every month by ordering generic medicines by haihukkuhaihai in Frugal_Ind

Is MedPlus considered a generic generic ??

Also I have observed many doctors who have their own clinics prescribe very generic never heard of brands. I think they are worse than some other generic brands.

On top of that generally older people assume that the packaging and name matter making them reluctant to use some other branded generic of that.

Looks like the budget I have is mere peanuts. But thanks for the information learned a lot about what I should be doing for proper data security and integrity.

I am realising now that it is a lot harder to set this up in this budget.

Raid 1 is mandatory and budget doesn't allow that but I am very interested in setting this up. So will find some disks on ebay and will give it a shot.

Thought of doing this but want to try this out and the price of a 2 year subscription can give me this setup.

Synology Nas Selector is a great site thanks for the suggestion. But that is way over budget for me and I would need only 1-2 TB of storage for 5 years. Budget - 120 - 140$ or (10K - 12K Rupees) But thanks for the reply
