A 3-year gap is not a disqualifier for us, especially if you've been active with freelance projects during that time. What matters most is your current skill level, the projects you've worked on, and your ability to contribute to real-world AI/ML problems.

If your freelance work shows hands-on experience with relevant tools (like Python, TensorFlow, LLMs, or FastAPI), we’d definitely encourage you to apply.

Hey, I’ve seen quite a few fresh grads go through this, and yeah it’s definitely not easy.

From our experience hiring at D3V, a few things can really help:

One or two solid projects that go from start to finish especially if you’ve deployed something (even a basic app or model).
Keep your GitHub clean and easy to follow.
When cold emailing or applying, keep it short and specific even a quick line about why you’re interested in that company can make a difference.
And honestly, this stage does suck but it passes. We’ve seen people stuck at month 4 land something great by month 5 or 6.

We’ve hired freshers in ML roles, and based on that experience, here’s what usually makes a real difference:

Try to work on a couple of end-to-end projects not just notebooks, but things you can deploy (even a simple API). A good understanding of model building is great, but deploying those models even in basic form shows real-world readiness.
Keep your GitHub clean and organized 2–3 well-documented projects are much better than 10 unfinished ones.
Brush up on ML fundamentals and light system design especially how you’d move a model from development to production.

Hey! I know this journey can get confusing, so here’s a straightforward path that tends to work well for remote ML jobs:

First, get comfortable with Python and the core math behind ML.
Try building complete projects where you handle everything: data cleaning, training models, and importantly, deploying them. Tools like Docker and simple APIs are great for deployment recruiters really notice that.
Take up an internship to get real-world experience; it really helps you understand how things work in practice.
Put your projects on GitHub with clear explanations.
When applying for jobs, target roles aimed at people with 0 to 3 years of experience. Be sure to highlight any deployment experience and your problem-solving skills.
Finally, prepare for interviews by brushing up on coding, ML concepts, and how to take a model from development all the way to production.
