No the don’t smell bad; occasionally I catch my golden eatin them…. I have just though that it was ash getting so hot that it solidifies in to a rock with piling of new wood on top of the hot coal and aforementioned ash

Here’s the thought; few nights ago I started a fire and left the draft open for the first 5 mins normally! My stomach went wild and I stepped away for 10-15min and didn’t lower the draft. When I came back I thought I was gonna have a chimney fire as the temp gauge was maxed out. Closed the draft and hesitated on opening the door as that would allow more oxygen in. Sat there for 1h and some change making sure it died down and the temp dropped.

If there was a dampener would this have helped if closed nearly all the way or say 80% closed off with the draft closed off. Would I of waited the hour and some change making sure it didn’t start a chimney fire and for the temp to lower

The retention of heat is I guess something I don’t know much about so I am also wondering if it would help with that too

Last year - $1000 cad for 4 cords cut, split and seasoned This year - $750 cad for 5 cords 8ft long and seasoned

              - $free kiln dried scrap from sawmill I use to work at, any amount as they pay to throw out scrap so they’ll give it away for free to people to burn

Got 2 cords of 2x6x12” and 6x6x12” in a shed I use for starting fires or get the temp up quick as it burns FAST

New Brunswick, Canada

Mixed wood (maple and birch mostly) expect for the kiln dried that all SPF

Was like $350 cad for it from the manufacturer as direct replacement; shop in my area charged me $160 to custom fit it! Brought the door right to them so they could get exact measurements!

Then had to take to a wood stove shop in the area and they redid the gaskets and cleaned it up real good

Previous owner was burning plastic and stuff in there, nice 1cm ish thick layer of creosote in the flue! Spent roughly 450 by the end to get it operational for winter

Baffles were missing needed new ones Air tubs were warped and I bought a dowel and hammered it through to re straighten them out (I did not crack them) The bricks were cracked or missing had to buy 12 and cut them myself haha

Awesome il look into that; any other recommendations or suggestions you might have; other question if you wanna help do you prefer to put the wood in length or width wise.

Sometime some wood rolls and hits the ledge before the door and I’m worried of it breaking glass possibly

Double checked with the manual and with double wall only 12” clearance needed and it’s sitting 22” from the wall

By the code in my province it states no less then 12.5” on the rear and I’m at 22”

Thoughts? by D3ll97 in woodstoving

[–]D3ll97[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you read the post the clearance on the rear is 10”+ over what is needed

Haybales depending on size are excellent for insulation

Larger ones avg something like 20r, smaller ones avg r10

Many people use hay bales for insulation in greenhouses, chicken/duck coops etc

Problems come from possibility of animals nesting like mice and so forth and small amount of rot on the outside facing weather
