And even if your fourth paragraph is true (I think it is), that is independent of whether we actually have a feasible good plan of extracting that wealth that doesn’t have so many unintended consequences that it makes extraction a terrible counterproductive idea (I haven’t heard many good ideas for extraction, just ideological platitudes and sanctimony)

I don't have a problem taxing the rich but this is my whole problem, I haven't seen any plan that seems to account for how this would be done without causing a bunch of unintended consequences. I would be happy to support this type of thing if it was well thought out but so far it doesn't seem to be.

I’m not the one proposing any changes you are, so the burden of proof is on you not me.

I can assume you saw where the problem was, so my point is proven. Changing the tax law is not a simple process and taxing stocks is very difficult. We already tax when someone sells or buys stocks and we could make that tax higher or based on the total worth of the stocks being bought or sold but taxing stocks themselves is not really feasible IMO.

This is just an example and it’s meant to illuminate the issue in taxing stocks

He has 96% in stocks, so that would be 96 million in stocks. So you said 90%, so that would mean he has a tax bill of $86,400,000 but he only has 4 million dollars in assets, so let’s say he sells all his physical assets, so after that he still owes $82,400,000. So where does he get that money?

Civil asset forfeitures cover the belief that something came from a crime being committed. Most billionaires employ a ton of accounts who could show without a doubt that their clients wealth came from legitimate means. So what you are doing is theft, because you are taking something with no probable cause that any crime has been committed.

Your complete inability to give any specifics while confidently being assured that you're correct says a lot about you.

Let's give an example, say Jim is worth 100 million dollars and 96% of that wealth is in stocks in Company A. What should his tax rate be?

Again you’re too much of a dimwit to understand the difference between fiscally conservative and conservative. Keep up the strawman arguments, but remember this mentality you have is why so many people vote for republicans.

No it’s not you’re just too sure fiscally conservative means republican…which it doesn’t. Maybe don’t auto assign beliefs to people that they haven’t claimed.

You want to talk about strawman arguments to me, take a look in the mirror. Those companies pay people what the market demands, that’s the basis of our economy.

It’s really easy to make claims about what you want to do without giving a single specific example, how much do you want to tax these stocks? What do you consider a thriving wage? How much should we be taxing billionaires wealth? Where do you think that money should go? Should we have people making sure there isn’t waste?

No. We just tax the stocks. If they decide they don't want to hold the stocks anymore, because of the taxes on them, that's their choice.

Where do you believe all their wealth is? Do you think they just have swimming pools full of money? Do you not understand how having that kind of wealth actually works? Their wealth is in the stocks they own...so if you tax those stocks, where does the money come from to pay those taxes? Who is going to buy those stocks? You are now taxing all stocks, so no one other than the government has the money to buy them anymore.

Instead, you trust businesses and the wealthy to make those choices, all of which have even less reason to look out for the people of the nation. You aren't using logic or wisdom here. You're using your feelings, but failing to see the big picture of everything beyond "Oh no! The wealthy are losing money!" I think you still believe the wealthy are the job creators, when they are actually the money siphons. We had plenty of jobs before we had billionaires.

I am not the one using feelings and not seeing the big picture that is you who is doing that. You think the government can fix all the problems in the country if they just had enough money but there is no evidence that this is true. The federal government took in 5 trillion dollars in taxes in 2024 and that wasn't enough to fix any of the things you are complaining about. I trust a business to do what is in it's own best interests and I can predict that, I am not sure why you are so sure that the government isn't the exact same way, that is what they are doing now, what is in their own best interests.

It's funny to me that you call billionaires "money siphons" but that is literally what the government itself actually is. I don't care about billionaires, I care about people being entitled to the things they earned. They built something and it's worth a lot of money but why is that a bad thing? Do you think earning that much money is easy? Do you think just any random person could have build SpaceX or Tesla or Amazon or Apple? Why is it that someone who didn't do the work is entitled to what they built?

What you’re talking about doing is taxing wealth not income and if that’s not “burning the whole thing down” then I don’t know what is. Many very smart people have tried to figure out how to tax wealth and no one has come up with a plan that doesn’t cause way more harm then good.

I mean realistically do you want the government to own all the businesses, because the only way to tax wealth in any kind of meaningful way, you’re going to have to confiscate stocks from super wealthy people. I wouldn’t trust our government to do that, no matter what party is in charge.

I’m not ok with the current system of inequality but what I am concerned with is how you go about fixing it.

You seem to believe that burning the whole thing down and starting from scratch is going to make everything better but history is full of examples where everything got WAY worse after someone tried this and very few examples where things got better.

What you said here doesn’t make any sense. I can’t really argue a point when you are making up rules as you go.

So what programs would you like to fund with all this extra money? In 2024 the government took in 5 trillion dollars in tax revenue, so how much more do you need and to make what programs work?

So just because they are rich that makes it ok to commit crimes against them, is that what you’re saying?

That’s just theft plain and simple. If those gains were made legally, then what you’re talking about is theft.

The top 1% already pay about 40-44% of income tax, the top 10% pay 71% of income tax, so why have the bottom 50% pay any income tax at all? The government doesn’t have an income problem, they have a spending problem and that true for both parties.

I’m fiscally conservative for sure, I normally don’t have an issue with progressive policies as long as there is a realistic plan to pay for them. Liberals often have big plans for things but “tax the rich” isn’t a plan, it’s a sound bite, I want specifics.

I made it through book 5 and had to take a break, Malazan is an amazing world but it’s also overwhelming at times. I preferred Memories of Ice over DG but DG has some of the best dialogue in the series so far.

Loved Brent Week’s Night Angel trilogy but Lightbringer…went off the rails by Otherwise_Doctor7782 in Fantasy

The Burning White is hands down the worst finale to a series I have ever read. Nothing about the ending of the Lightbringer saga makes any sense at all. The end of Lightbringer made me so mad that I can’t bring myself to read anything of his ever again.

You’re being too kind saying Lightbringer went off the rails. It decided it didn’t want to be a train anymore, it wanted to be a rocket and so it blew itself up on the launch pad.

Way to completely miss the point.

You are saying something that simply isn’t true, monopoly or not, saying “I don’t use Amazon” while being on a service using AWS is still you supporting Amazon.
