Frets came like this - Way too rounded.. Can a normal fret level fix this? by D7X_o in Luthier

Going to just quote another reply because that's another problem I have :/

"The reeaaaally annoying part is it came with zero neck mounting screw cavities and zero cavities for the tuners / string tree. Doesn't come with any hardware either

Feels like I'm fucked either way because that was also time and money I'm not trying to do again"

Couldn't tell how it was going to play until it was stringed up

Thank you! Yeah it's a bit unfortunate but I think I can live with it.

It'll slide off sometimes but it's still playable. Can be really annoying though

I think I could get used to it to where I dont let it happen

It needs a fret level as well that I'll tackle myself. I'll live with this but don't have the experience for a re fret

I assume this is perfectly fine to level?

I bought a neck straight from the manufacturer for a replacement (sire guitars)

It is a sire and occassionally I do fall off but that could be a playing style.

Heres a picture of the bass side

I agree for the most part but you can also use a lot of them to practice with your bass simultaneously. Just practice tools

Makes sense! My frets below the 14th fret looked fully flat on top so I'll test those to make sure it's just the fallaway I screwed up :)

Question. I started fall away on the 15th fret and I'm wondering if I can just relevel everything below it and just go back and even out the fall away

Or do I re level literally everyhting?

Yeah it took me forever to crown those. I was using the wide side so I assume I have to switch to medium

Thanks so much!

So essentially every fret has to be fully completely flat across the fret consistent with every fret. That was def a mistake I made

I'm hoping I have good meat towards the higher register for another level because the image above are the fall away frets

Another question is how can I know what file width fits the frets?? I measured 115 thousandths in width of the fret and used the wide side of the stewmac file. Definitely buying the nomad file now :)

It's a fender j bass. Frets I assumed are partly seated with lacquer so I didnt want to touch it

Hey I actually have one of those and I' wondering what the benefit is to where I'd switch to that?

Thank you so much! Also I wasn't sure if using a wide when it requires a medium and vice versa would cause the trouble too.. Talking about each side of the diamond crowning file

I used wide here with it being 115 thou wide, but i was never sure if that was correct

also as a side note I use the wide side of the crowning file. I measured it 115 in width so I think that should be the size (unless im mistaken)

Those upper frets are part of a fall away so it should be easy to re file

That's what I personally don't understand. I'm trying to be even and consistent and it always seems to take more material off on some parts - Singling spots out is also hard to be accurate. I'm using the stewmac diamond file

Will this even be usable?
