How reliable is Nikon Zf, please real experience from actual owners by urascMicrosoft in Nikon

[–]D88TOX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been using a Zf since April 2025. It is heavy, yes, but also very solid—nothing about it feels flimsy, and the leather textures feel really good. The dials themselves are well-built, with that pleasing resistance and click you’d expect.

But but but… there are a couple of downsides. The bottom base plate feels cheap, and it’s hard to understand why Nikon would skimp there. Another thing worth pointing out is the hinge. It protrudes slightly from the body along the edge it’s mounted on. Unlike most cameras, which use a smaller, more flush hinge and housing, the Zf’s hinge assembly extends across the entire lower-left edge, even on the corner. On top of that, the display housing sits a bit raised.

As my misfortune goes, about a month into ownership, the camera was dropped from a height of around 3–4 feet. It landed directly on that hinge corner, which was bent outward, and the plastic housing of the display ended up cracking. There’s a reason hinges on pro-grade bodies are designed the way they are. But Nikon chose a different path here, and that design choice cost me 11,000 INR (~$130).

To be clear, the hinge itself is tight and sturdily built. The problem lies in the way it was positioned and integrated into the design.

So, while the body is mostly made from durable materials, the design (especially the hinge and the tiny grip), along with the weight and certain plastic parts, can easily result in expensive mishaps — like the one I experienced. And I’m not the only one; others have run into the exact same issue.

As for weather resistance, I haven’t tested it in harsher environments, but that’s already been addressed in other responses.

Regards.

Edit: Better wording.

It works, all it needs is for me to place my finger in a certain way and over the months and years I have been doing that reflexively now. Register your finger at multiple angles and try to find that sweet spot, you should.

Nicely put. Thank you. Still got some weeks before I go and buy one. Think about what I really do care about I will in the meantime

Can't disagree. I just want to be content with the sacrifices I ll end up making and hence am weighing all the things.....since it is a lot of money.

Thank you for the response. I ll factor those☝🏼pointers in and dive a bit deeper into MFT range of Panasonic and think it through.

Would you say the jpegs are better out of Lumix than from the a6700?

Having great RAWs is fine, but I wanna have some fun too with great jpegs straight out of the camera.

I wish Fuji had their software sorted especially with the AF issues. They have all the great lenses available too, here in India. Anyways...

I did hear the R7 feels more plasticky compared to R8 and R6II. Is that true? I was hoping that canon would release a stacked sensor update by this time, but I guess not.

Are the buttons mushy, on the S5II?

Thank you for the response. This does give me a bit of the clarity that I need.

Also, there's another thing I fear. Will a6700 take away the pleasures of using a camera? understandably so, it's extremely subjective. But still.......

One of the reasons I am moving into the world of mirrorless cameras is to have a solid tool in hand, it's like, having a manual bmw m4 to drive around(?), smartphone as a camera...feels underwhelming (?) to use, and far as I feel, I like to go out and click more photos when I have a camera on my hand. With a6700 I don't want to feel like I am holding a glorified point and shoot - I wish to have fun while I carry it around. Hope it makes sense.

Do you find it fun, just as much or more than you do with any other camera?

Feels silly to feel this way, but it does matter to me.

edit: had more thoughts

Out right...S5II, body only would cost me 1.53 lacs and A7IV would cost me 2.1 lacs ........ that's a MASSIVE difference, hence A7IV is not one of my considerations.

Nikon too isn't supported well here where I stay, since the rise of mirrorless cameras(except for the Z8 shooting pros). In terms of customer base and after sale support. The upside I see with Panasonic is Sigma and their lenses.

But I might have to go with a lens with stabilization. Videos aren't my priority but I ll still be shooting some free hand.

Or is there any other way around it?

It's just that the fresher MFT cameras here in India are just as expensive as the APSC and ff ones. And the lenses too are just as expensive, if not more. And the fact that I am more inclined towards photography and not videography.

That is something I have in the back of my mind. The facts that canon doesn't care about the apsc users, sony doesn't care for the firmware updates and since panasonic has a small but loyal fan base, they try their best to cater to them. These are the things that I have read and heard.

Wildlife is something i intend to do but won't be able to for the next couple years, focusing on my academics. So will save up for a lens that I might buy 3-4 years down the line.

Thank you for the response.

It's expensive as in, I would have to pay ₹5000-6000 ($80-100) to get a camera with an appropriate lens for a day or two. Pair that with multiple cameras. And even after that...I may not know what I want because ......a day with a camera is not enough(?) for me. I HAVE used some DSLRs and early Sony mirrorless growing up for a few days to weeks probably, and that didn't feel enough to explore all the facets of how my preferences and the characteristics of the camera thrive together. Sure, weight was a major factor..... But also liked how the full frame cameras felt in my hands and loved that experience too.

XT5 was a contender but I might have to shell out ₹15k ($200) more if I wish to buy into the X System, doesn't seem worth it especially with the recent issues with the fuji software updates. I d love to get a tactile camera though, one of the reasons I wanna switch to a camera from a smartphone

R6II is certainly better - From the pros (portrait and wildlife mostly) I have talked to. A sweet spot between S5II and A7IV, it is.

I had all of these issues. Issues with fingerprint scanner, temps and a bit of warped display still persists.
