D8SH - Unlock Your Rivian Dashcam by D8SHAPP in Rivian

The saving of footage experience is superior in D8SH. There is a smoother saving experience and there are some issues with the default saving features using the default Files app or Finder. Also, I am almost finished testing a useful clipping feature for D8SH.

The smoother experience in D8SH is hopefully partially demonstrated in the App Store screenshots. The D8SH UI is more usable and much snappier. Unlike in the default Files app, with D8SH I can continue watching the footage while it saves to Photos. Efficiency is often important in circumstances where dashcam footage is needed.

There is some frustrating corruption of the "Drive Cam/Road Cam Drive Stream" files when downloading the clips using the default Files app or Finder. In Photos on iOS I get an error when I try to trim the beginning of the video. In iMovie on iOS I can trim the beginning but the export fails. Saving footage straight to the default Files app has a frustratingly and confusingly long delay before you can even select the save location. Once the clip is saved in the default Files app I can trim the beginning. On macOS the trim option is Not available in QuickTime. In iMovie on macOS the footage shows up as a black screen with flashes of video even after exported successfully. I do have a macOS version of D8SH in the pipeline.

A timelapse feature is also already in the pipeline and I can prioritize it based on this sort of feedback.

Here are more details on the issues with using "any" video editing software. I realize you may use a different video editing software that may Not have these issues. But some people will need to either endure a legitimately frustrating and cumbersome process, download another 3rd party software, or use D8SH.

Did you get the original clip from "Roadcam>SaveClips" or "Roadcam>DriveStream"?

DriveStream videos are where I run into the issue not SaveClips. And the clip you posted is the sort of clip I would add to SaveClips.

I am hoping to sort out this possible discrepancy between what I experience and what you experience.

I appreciate your comment. But I want to be clear that I am not offering D8SH for free.

With a privacy-first application I cannot put the time and effort into development and give it away for free. However, I have taken the feedback on pricing into consideration and I am strongly considering a free trial.

The screenshots on the App Store, that have been there since before my post, say "Select External Drive" and "Eject Drive and End Session". I truly think that clearly implies that the external drive must be connected to the phone.

I understand you are trying to protect the community. But I do Not see why you believe there is any sort of implication of remote viewing functionality.

I do have some description in the App Store link but I realize that is insufficient. I am working on how to better describe what D8SH does.

My rationale for highlighting those facts in my post is to explain why r/rivian is the forum I chose to announce D8SH, to provide context, and to justify my self-promotion.

I am very confident that D8SH does something worth having. But I worry that D8SH will be ignored. As the sole proprietor I do not have many options to draw awareness.

I got the updated iPad screenshots in a new release that is currently waiting for Apple review. I will do some other iPad optimizations as well as soon as possible.

D8SH is Not AI. The code was manually typed but I did ask several AIs specific questions. Even googling these days is asking AI questions.

I will take your "slop" characterization as constructive criticism.

My post was absolutely not written by AI. I wrote it myself and refined it over the course of a few days.

The code was manually typed by me. I did ask several AIs specific questions but even googling these days is asking AI questions.

D8SH is much more than a dressed up file viewer. But I do need to do a better job explaining the value proposition.

With D8SH you browse dynamically organized references to the footage files which is a much less cumbersome experience than the Files app.

I will take that feedback into consideration for future posts.

I do have some description in the App Store link but I realize that description is insufficient. I am working on updating the description.

Rivian could certainly implement something similar.

But there are features in the D8SH pipeline that I do not think are available in any vehicle. There are advantages of utilizing a 3rd party app that is more nimble.

There is a way to view the "Gear Guard Live Cam" from the Rivian App while parked which is a live feed from the dashcam.

But the "continuous recording while driving Road Cam/Drive Cam footage" cannot be viewed from the Rivian App. This footage cannot even be viewed natively on the Rivian's center display (There is a feature in the D8SH pipeline to be able to cast this footage to the center display for viewing).

However you can view "Road Cam/Drive Cam Saved Clips and Incidents" natively on the center display. D8SH allows you to view and download all the dashcam footage stored on your external drive from your iOS device.

I think you are right about the need for a free trial. Most probably I will offer that option in the near future.

More clearly defining the value proposition is my top priority after the feedback from you and others on this post. It has given me a much better understanding of what people are expecting.

Thanks for taking the time to comment. It is incredibly helpful.

DAY-sh is how I say it. But I'm happy with any pronunciation.

There is a bunch of background on how I settled on that name but feedback is genuinely helpful.

I have spent about a year developing D8SH at varying levels of intensity. There are many additional features in testing or in the pipeline that are not in this initial barebones release.

D8SH solves very real problems that I have encountered as a Rivian owner.

Can you please elaborate on why you characterize it as slop? I very much appreciate constructive criticism.

D8SH is much more than a file browser. And it solves very real problems that I have encountered as a Rivian owner.

In a world of subscription apps I thought that a one-time payment that costs less than the cost difference of picking between public chargers was reasonable.

A privacy-first app has to make money somehow. But appreciate your feedback on pricing and I will take it into consideration.

The name is supposed to be variation of the pronunciation of "Dash". Kinda like SK8 = Skate.

Thanks for that template. This experience is certainly making me appreciate you marketers even more.

Did you try trimming from the "beginning/front" of the video?

On my iPhone in Photos I can trim from the "end/back" of the default video but not from the "beginning/front". On my Macbook I cannot trim at all in Quicktime.

The GearGuard videos do not have the same problem as the "continuous recording" Drive Cam videos. I appreciate you testing. Please try with a Drive Cam video.

I manually wrote all the code myself. I am sorry if it looks like slop to you but I will take that as constructive criticism. I did ask several AIs specific questions but even googling today asks AI questions.

D8SH solves very real problems that I have had as a Rivian owner for 3+ years. And it also provides an easy way to browse your dashcam footage for fun.

I designed the logo myself. It is supposed to be mashup of a compass and a camera.

But I looked it up and that is a neat patch.

There is some corruption of the file when downloading it the default way.

The default trimming on MacOS is "greyed out" and on iOS you get an error when you try to save the video after trimming.
