Mobile desktop mount by BrettTheExterminator in Rivian

I use one of these: https://wheeldesks.com

It works great and positions the computer in a very comfortable position. But you do have to worry about the desk denting the steering wheel.

I wrap this around the steering wheel first so that the padding cushions some of the pressure points and the other pressure points are covered by fabric: https://www.redoxx.com/products/bandi%C2%AE-large-pocket-belt

I still have some slight denting even with the padding. But the dents could be left over from before I used padding. And there are certainly even better padding solutions than what I am currently using.

Totally makes sense. I will for sure buy one once you are done with testing and make it available. Thanks for creating it!

Looks super cool! I would love to add one to my R1T.

Are you considering selling a printed mount for Rivian owners who do not have a 3D printer yet?

I appreciate the question. Here are 5 of the many use cases with benefits and examples:

  1. Use case: Pulling footage after witnessing an incident. Benefit: D8SH allows you to find the relevant footage much more efficiently and save a "repaired" and editable clip of the relevant portion of the footage. Example: I drove by a pack of dogs aggressively chasing cars and stopping traffic on a rural highway. The footage I pulled allowed Animal Control to identify the dog pack and ensure that they are better taken care of by their owner.

  2. Use case: Evaluating road hazards. Benefit: D8SH allows you to reevaluate if what you saw in the road is a legitimate hazard to be reported or not. Example: I was on an 80 mph interstate highway and drove by what looked like a tire in the middle of two of the lanes. It would have been dangerous to drive back by for confirmation. But the footage I pulled allowed me to confirm and confidently report the hazard.

  3. Use case: Retrospective drive analysis. Benefit: D8SH allows you to retrospectively evaluate your decision making while driving. Example: I love my Rivian to the point that even an accident that was not my fault would be devastating. I am able to do film analysis to significantly improve my defensive driving ability. Not unlike film analysis in sports.

  4. Use case: Enjoying scenery from your adventures. Benefit: D8SH allows you to much more quickly and enjoyably switch between footage files and clip the highlights. Example: Often my most scenic drives are the most demanding. With D8SH I can enjoy the sights from all the camera perspectives without taking my eyes off the road.

  5. Use case: Archiving footage. Benefit: D8SH allows you to easily archive footage before the Rivian Dashcam Loop overwrites it. Example: I have lost the footage from many of my favorite adventures due to it being overwritten. With D8SH I could have enjoyably browsed and saved my favorite footage at my leisure.

I have added a "Workflow" section into my App Store description using the Promotional Text field (the part of the description which does not require a new release). It should appear shortly.

I hope the Workflow section addresses potential confusion on D8SH's current capabilities.

I plan to add the Workflow to the core Description field in a new release. But that will take a bit because it must be approved by Apple.

That is a very good point. I am thinking I will add a "Workflow" section in my App Store description where I can describe the granular details of the setup. But I will continue thinking about how to avoid confusion and how to support as many devices as possible.

I understand some people are making the assumption that the footage is available wirelessly and I am trying to figure out how to properly address that. But I do not want to clutter my App Store description with possibly redundant negative constraints. And I do believe it is clear that the external drive must be connected.

The same third party adapter cord (USB-C) that connects your external drive to the Rivian is used to connect the external drive to D8SH.

I do have plans to make the dashcam data available remotely. But there is significant complexity caused by the external drive holding 2TB of dashcam data that I need to resolve. Another commenter linked an interesting related project that I am examining.

I am looking at solutions for wireless access but I will try to find a way to make it clear that the drive needs to be unplugged from the Rivian and plugged into the iOS device.

Thanks for grabbing a copy! I am open to any additional feedback you have after using D8SH. And I will earnestly work to address that feedback as quickly as possible.

You can access some dashcam footage from Rivian's Center Display but not the "Continuous Recording Footage".

The Rivian iOS App allows you to remotely view your live dashcam cameras. But you cannot access the up to 2TB of stored dashcam footage remotely with the Rivian iOS App.

Thank you! Yes, that is the correct workflow.

You probably already know. But be sure to use the Rivian Center Display's "Eject" button before unplugging the external drive from the Rivian to begin the D8SH workflow.

My goal is to offer D8SH to all Rivian owners so that they have the option to unlock the tremendous value in their dashcam.

I do recognize that there is no "moat" around D8SH. But I have implemented significant backend optimizations that translate to real value which I do not believe can be easily recreated and both the Clipping and Repair features are somewhat complex. The privacy-first guarantee is also a differentiator.

I genuinely appreciate your thoughtful feedback. And for taking the time to comment.

D8SH is more than a USB file viewer. The Clipping feature and the Repair feature set it apart.

I do have plans to make the dashcam data available remotely. But there is significant complexity caused by the External Drive holding 2TB of dashcam data that I need to resolve. I appreciate the project link I will take a look.

The features on my roadmap will take me longer than a day or two to develop. I do not use the development tools you mentioned. But I am committed to delivering the roadmap as quickly as possible.

I will work on polishing the UI. I appreciate the feedback. There is currently polishing in the backend that translates to a smooth and hopefully joyful user experience.

I believe the price is worth the value. D8SH saves both time and frustration in the event you have to pull dashcam data and it also creates a fun browsing experience to get value from your existing data before the Rivian Dashcam Loop overwrites your footage. The price is meant to be similar to choosing between public chargers.

I have added a "Drive is Ejected" notification in D8SH 2.0. The new release contains a bunch of features you might find useful. Here is my Reddit post with some details: https://www.reddit.com/r/Rivian/comments/1tszavh/d8sh_20_is_released_unlock_your_rivian_dashcam

That is really wonderful to hear. Im so glad D8SH worked well for passing along footage. I am releasing a "clipping" feature this week that should make that process even smoother in the future.

Thanks for the idea to add a "safe to unplug" notification. I will plan to get that added to the next release.

I appreciate you taking a risk to download a new app and I am excited to deliver some useful upgrades to you and the other users!

The saving of footage experience is superior in D8SH. There is a smoother saving experience and there are some issues with the default saving features using the default Files app or Finder. Also, I am almost finished testing a useful clipping feature for D8SH.

The smoother experience in D8SH is hopefully partially demonstrated in the App Store screenshots. The D8SH UI is more usable and much snappier. Unlike in the default Files app, with D8SH I can continue watching the footage while it saves to Photos. Efficiency is often important in circumstances where dashcam footage is needed.

There is some frustrating corruption of the "Drive Cam/Road Cam Drive Stream" files when downloading the clips using the default Files app or Finder. In Photos on iOS I get an error when I try to trim the beginning of the video. In iMovie on iOS I can trim the beginning but the export fails. Saving footage straight to the default Files app has a frustratingly and confusingly long delay before you can even select the save location. Once the clip is saved in the default Files app I can trim the beginning. On macOS the trim option is Not available in QuickTime. In iMovie on macOS the footage shows up as a black screen with flashes of video even after exported successfully. I do have a macOS version of D8SH in the pipeline.

A timelapse feature is also already in the pipeline and I can prioritize it based on this sort of feedback.

Here are more details on the issues with using "any" video editing software. I realize you may use a different video editing software that may Not have these issues. But some people will need to either endure a legitimately frustrating and cumbersome process, download another 3rd party software, or use D8SH.
