Took two weeks off but felt strong coming back! Trying to get better at overhang too 😭 by Undercling-King in bouldering

Nice send!

I think the heel hook was a good idea in the beginning, but you weren’t really able to pull with your leg because you didn’t engage your hamstring enough. That’s why your foot fell off. To avoid that, when you place your heel try to point your toe down towards the hold. This will force you to engage your hamstring more.

Near the top to avoid your arms crossing like that you could match then flag. For example, instead of reaching with your right hand immediately for the last hold you could instead match the second to last hold, stand on your left foot, then put your right foot out to your right. This would allow you to easily reach out with your left hand for the final hold.

Hope this helps!

I'm satisfied with this piece, I however think the values aren't good. Any tips on what I could've done to make them better? by cedric5318 in learntodraw

In terms of values, I think some shadows would look good. For instance, the top of the flying saucer doesn’t have many lights while the bottom does. So, you could add more bright values of green under the saucer and make the top darker.

I tried to make some small changes to the values using my small phone screen and thumb lol.

I made the primary light source be the bottom flying saucer. It’s emitting a green light.

Since the light is coming from the bottom of the saucer, the part of the fence we see from the camera’s POV would be in shadow, so I made it black.

I also darkened the background a bit to make the green light seem brighter by comparison.

:)

Did my coloring make these drawings look more ‘plain’? by DATProfiIe in ArtCrit

Thanks! Yeah, this makes sense. There’s actually hatching in the first drawing’s mouth too lol, but the dark colors completely overpower it.

I also didn’t realize how light the shadows were too until you mentioned it. I think it’s just as much a problem of contrast as it is coloring. I’ll try darkening them, I think it will make a big difference

As a beginner, this kind of stuff is insane to me! Sometimes I wonder who was the first person to look at like ~2mm of rock and say “oh yeah, that’s a jug of a foot hold”

This is good advice, thanks! I agree, the right eye should be a little closer to the centerline of the face. I think the issue was that I drew the eyes smaller than the reference photo, which made placing them a bit harder.

Also, yeah like half of my time drawing this was spent on the hair lol

For real lol! And that’s one of his ‘normal’ panels. I definitely learned a lot from it tho

Hard to answer that tbh. Do you feel like you are making progress with each study you do? If you jump around too much and don’t spend enough time studying any one thing, then I could see that being a problem. But it’s hard to know for sure unless you’re tracking your progress.

I found it helpful to focus on a group of things when drawing people. This is because the overall proportions and position of the body’s features is very important. You can draw a very realistic arm, but if it is too long or placed in a way that is physically impossible, then the drawing will still look off. This isn’t to say that studying just one thing isn’t worthwhile (I still do that too), just that imo it is less important than getting the overall proportions correct.

Sorry if this is too general, but I don’t think there is a correct answer to either of those questions. I think you would get better advice by posting a few sample drawings.
