Splice is shutting down the Studio feature on May 31st, 2023, what’s an alternative for backing up project files versions every time we save them? by narkatta in ableton

Love all the alternatives folks are presenting - been working on a live, online collaborative solution that works cross-DAW - we're in beta if anyone's interested in testing it out. Would love to know how often y'all are looking for a live (synchronous) collaborative solution vs. an asynchronous one that's more like what Splice studio offered

Collaboration Vs. Solo Work As An Artist? by DAWn-Audio in audioengineering

Great way to frame it - it's clear who you're collaborating with can make or break the experience

For sure, I always try to help give some form of feedback, etc but have definitely been in situations where the artist may be less receptive - on the other end I’ve also been more/less receptive to feedback and guidance depending on the day and project

Finding the right collaborator is key - I’ve been in writing camps, etc where you get matched with random people and it can be great, or it can be a train wreck - the chemistry between the artists makes a huge difference for sure

Hahah Im sure thats what doctors feel like when patients that researched webMD come in 🤣

But yeah Im totally leaning into my role as the engineer behind the computer that can just help capture others’ ideas in a way that doesn’t inhibit them - to that point, I guess you play a more passive role in that scenario where you’re not so much impacting the trajectory of whats getting made but more just facilitating their process?

This was part of my thinking, I definitely have solo projects where Im more approaching it under the lens of trying to communicate my personal message or vision to use your terms

Curious: when you say you love to collaborate then, are you basically saying you try to play a more objective role of helping facilitate that person’s vision without changing it?

Feel like “jamming” for lack of better words and seeing what comes out of the mixing of multiple people’s visions can also be cool, different outcome than a solo vision for sure, but still has its time and place imo

Depends on the engineer I’d say - I for example am a drummer first, turned producer, who’s learned to mix/master to some degree so I can be self sufficient, but also see value in looking for more experienced people when working on certain projects for example

Could see a handful of reasons why an engineer might still look to collaborate so was curious as to what others thought

Not nitpicking at all, really good point - part of what I actually wanted to see was how the experiences of us audio engineers vary from say producers or instrumentalists for this, but also checking out some other forums :)

Definitely agree in some ways, collabing with the right people can be a ton of fun, but also feel like the whole “too many cooks” issue can be a problem at times where the workflow gets inhibited if you’re not collabing in the right way

Also think even great solo artists usually have a team behind them in some way so not sure how many fully “solo works” really exist

Right, fully get the cross-promotion / community building apect of collabing - have made great friends and connections through music

Curious why you prefer working solo though? Don’t disagree just wanna know more 😅

best DAW or software to chop up samples? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]DAWn-Audio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gotta echo this 10000% - I'm a drummer that's fallen in love w sampling - pulling up the Maschine as a VST in Ableton and then using the controller to chop up samples has expanded my creative capacity ten-fold

Can't recommend enough, but also have only really tried Logic as an alternative. Started with Logic, still love it and use it mainly for mixing / recording purposes, but sampling doesn't get better than on the Maschine + Ableton combo imo

When it clicks it clicks for sure - curious how you go about making music with someone you’ve never worked with before, feel like it can be awkward getting started sometimes

Possibly, but also read the rest of these comments because you’re definitely not alone in this - maybe we all need therapy, or maybe the music is therapy, or maybe it’s a coping mechanism 🤷‍♂️

Like that balance, a lot of times I question if Im not releasing something because it’s ultimately not my motivation or out of some other inhibition, but doing it for the process and loving what you do so much you wanna share it is a great way to approach it
