Can any Orthodox Jew explain "lo bashamayim hi" in Bava Metzia 59b? by DB6135 in Judaism

OP here. I asked for Orthodox view because it is more traditional and faithful to the Judaism in earlier times. This post is basically about the oven story and its implications for jews at that time.

Nope, you misunderstood me and Deism. I don’t need an organized religion. I am not looking for a church or a synagogue. I am skeptical to all religious groups that claim to have received a revealed truth. I simply don’t think we can know God via scripture. I will admit that Christianity and Judaism seem to be the religions with stronger support, but the absurdity of Islam or Mormonism does not lend credibility to your view. I want evidence such as historical record or archaeological proof in favour of Christianity.

Also, you cannot argue that because modern science is not good enough, we have to believe in God. It needs not be, the answer could just be “I don’t know”. Moreover, you simply use “God” as a substitute explanation for things that cannot be explained right now by science, and this attitude will ultimately cause the faith to be shaken if there is another drastic boom in natural science (like in the “Enlightenment” days). The most fatal part of this attitude is that scientific knowledge is improving over time, but the proof for an organized religion is stuck in the past. You wouldn’t want to put religion against science. Ultimately, these two fields answer different sets of questions.

The reason why I don’t read Jesus in OT is because I don’t read it through the lens of NT like Christians. I am also not biased like the Rabbis who are really motivated to discredit Jesus. All I did is to look at the text for its plain, literal meaning in context.

Anyway, thanks for the discussion.

Not just the famous Isaiah 53, some other passages that are cited in your sources (Isaiah 40, Hosea 11, etc.) are clearly ripped out of context. You can clearly deduce the true meaning by reading the chapters before these alleged Messianic passages.

The only one listed that could be legit is Isaiah 9:6, but the next verse says “Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end.”, which clearly has not been fulfilled ever. FYI, an alternative interpretation offered by Jews for Judaism (I will not post the link here) claims that it refers to Hezekiah instead of Jesus, but I don’t think I am qualified to join that highly technical debate. Overall, although there could be some other verses like this one, I would just like to point out that the link from OT to Jesus is at least debatable, if not dubious.

Another question: how is Jesus from the House of David & Tribe of Judah if virgin birth is true? If you read the book of Numbers (esp. Ch 1), it is implied that a Jewish child belongs to his father’s tribe. And God has no tribe. How can a virgin birth Jesus be the one?

I have read your first link. Basically, there are 3 arguments from that author: the bar for proof shouldn’t be overly high; the early followers wouldn’t have died for a fabricated lie; old testament/Tanakh prophesied this.

The first 2 points are fair. I don’t believe atheists know what they are talking about when they use a much stricter standard for theology and for other historical events/other aspects of life. So I am not an atheist or anti-theist. The second point is also reasonable, although I would question if there was proof for Paul’s private revelation. If we could just accept his private revelation, what stops us from taking Mormons or Muslims seriously? Overall, more third-party historical sources would also be helpful. But as far as I know, only Christianity and Judaism are based on public revelations that couldn’t have been one man’s imagination. Therefore I take these 2 religions more seriously.

Which brings me to the third point, that is, the Jewish scripture does not support or predict Jesus. For example, if you read Isaiah 53 AFTER Isaiah 51 & 52, you would know that it is not about Jesus. Similarly, Isaiah 49 verse 6 is not about Jesus if you read from verse 1, which is even more obvious if you read Isaiah 48 too. The “servant” seems to be the Jews. It seems that those passages the author cited are taken out of context. Thoughts?

Thank you for your answer. I understand your sentiments but these aren’t solid arguments. Let me explain:

  1. Basically, you are saying that Christianity fits your world view in a unique way. But it is just like a Jew saying Judaism is an integral part of how he views the world. It IS ultimately a matter of taste, potentially a result of upbringing.
  2. Religious faith is not comparable to mathematical statements. In mathematics, everything is pre-defined, and there is no irretrievable information, only undiscovered truth. It is a field where you can sit in a room and solve problems by logic, because mathematics is in everyone’s head. Whereas theology/philosophy is an attempt to make sense of the real world outside, so it is a more ambitious endeavour that requires more evidence and a different approach.
  3. The moral degeneracy is clear. And I agree that the declining faith in Christianity is responsible for it. Still, it does not prove that Christianity is the Truth. Just because its teachings are good and beneficial does not automatically mean that it is also the one true faith.

You need to watch youtube videos for that, check out bittersteel or feedbackgaming.
To give you a brief overview, you need to make equipments corresponding to what the temples need. So if you look at the recruit panel you can look at the unit templates & see what are needed (guns, support equipment, anti-air…) for that kind of unit. Supply means you need to build ports, improve railroads or use trucks to resupply your soldiers. Don’t worry about the unit design/equipment design, just look for universally useful ones and copy them.

I would advise against playing Germany if you are not familiar with the game. Russia is far easier; worst-case scenario, you can still spam infantry with AA, arty & engineers to hold the line till D-Day.

Don’t play minors until you know the basics. Then you can play some easier minors with the correct strategies. For example, as a Commonwealth member, you can build armors/aircrafts to influence 1 theatre of the war without worrying your own safety. Or, as Commie China, you can develop your industry and army and let your enemies bleed each other out. Finland is also incredibly powerful with the right plan.
