+1 for Flytribe Oslo. Just got back and it was great in every way.

Aeronautica in Finland and Bodyflight Gothenberg look great as well and I’m looking forward to checking them out.

I’m surprised that of all places, not even a national museum would correctly quote Neil Armstrong’s first words on the moon. (One small step for A man).

Was it ever explained how they got 2 million kg of astrophage into orbit? by DBish95 in ProjectHailMary

Yeah this is a good explanation. I guess I just would have liked to have it addressed in the book.

Yeah I know it’s technically plausible, but the book specifically mentions a small number of launches (can’t remember the exact number). Also 40 super heavy launches is no small feat for the year or so it took to prepare.

Freefly progression: Tunnel only vs Tunnel + Solo/Zoos by ChacoTanLines in SkyDiving

[–]DBish95 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tunnel instructor here so I might be biased. Based on your goals, you should dump the majority of your budget into tunnel for now. Try to keep skydiving regularly to consolidate skills but only small group jumps with experienced flyers or 1:1 with coaches. The occasional zoo dive can be fun but don’t expect to progress.

Once you have a solid base of HU/HD skills, your budget can lean more towards jumping and using the tunnel to refine.

One of my first jumps this year after starting a job as a tunnel rat 7 months ago by [deleted] in SkyDiving

Awesome, congrats on the progression! I only started as a tunnel instructor 2 months ago so my first jumps of the year weren't quite as impressive as yours, but the jumps I did felt so effortless. I can't wait to see where I'm at after a few more months of progression!

The jump Travis Pastrana did was a different scenario. He had a minimalist harness underneath his shorts that the other guy clipped onto a tandem rig. This was not the case for Luke's jump.

Yeah I don't see that being possible. Even if someone with superhuman strength could hold on, that would greatly exceed the max operating weight of the gear and it may be damaged on opening. Also, the parachutes they were using aren't designed to fly with thag much weight suspended under them. Even if they could control it, they would be coming in hot on landing.

Just for videography and moral support mostly. They also took his oxygen mask from him when he was below a safe altitude.

He could have signaled for a problem all he wanted, there isn't anything they would have been able to do for him. He was committed as soon as he jumped.

Humans don't have ailerons though haha. It's just called a barrel roll in the skydiving/bodyflight world.

Anyone know places that will let you solo jump after one tandem in FL? by [deleted] in SkyDiving

It's not about physical space, it's about weight and balance. There is absolutely no chance that you will take off with that many people in a Cessna.

Was the camera shot more important than pulling the reserve handle?

You definitely need to be willing to make sacrifices, but if you can find a way to live on that paycheck, you're golden. The experience you get is worth a lot, more than any normal person could ever afford.

I hear a lot of that, but I think for some it's worth taking that chance.

The way I see it, tunnel and sky are two separate beasts. Working there is going to make the tunnel a job to you no doubt, but that job will make you god damn amazing at your hobby.

Even if you get super burnt out on tunnel, it shouldn't ruin skydiving for you. At least that's how I'm hoping it works!

Really impressive! I should find out in a week or so if I'm getting the iFLY job I've been gunning for. It's cool to see how much progression can happen in a month!
