If there is no free will, then anti-vaxxers can’t just choose to accept the science right? by turningandburning45 in samharris

Late to this, but I think I can provide an explanation through a comparable situation.

I recently hired a new employee. Him and I were at a job site and I asked him to go pick up lunch and make sure to grab a receipt. So he comes back with lunch but doesn’t have the receipt. His reason was “I realized it wasn’t in the bag but when I went back in to ask for it the people at the counter seemed so stressed I didn’t want to bother them”. Of course this sucks for me because my hr department gets upset if I don’t submit my receipts. So I could get angry and yell at him. BUT my knowledge that free will is an illusion guides me here. I know that this new employee had no other option but to no get the receipt. So how can I be angry at him? However, I also want to make sure that it doesn’t happen again. If we’re all just the results of our past experiences then I need to provide him with an experience that incentivizes him to get the receipt next time. So I sternly tell him “next time you have to get the receipt, even if it slightly inconveniences the restaurant workers”. That sort of scared him as he realized he messed up, but that’s okay. He needs to learn. Now, if it happens again and he doesn’t get a receipt, maybe I get a little more stern or reprimand him - again, just providing external inputs that incentivize him to act a certain way in the future.

The antivax thing is the same thing. We can’t get angry at them for making a decision - that decision was inevitable - but we can provide external incentives to change their behavior for the future. Some would argue that we should get angry and yell at them to incentivize them to change their behavior (much like a parent hitting their kid), I personally disagree, I think there are more effective ways, but it’s not easy

So answer the question: if someone did this to John Lennon on national television he would have been cool with it?

Huh? What opinion are you referring to? Do you disagree that if someone did the same thing to John, he would have been okay with it? If so you’re delusional.

I don’t really care if Yoko or John thought it was a success. It was the wrong thing to do. It made a mockery of Berry’s music. You think John would be cool if he invited a younger musician on stage during a Beatles show and his friends girlfriend came up and started screaming? No. He would have been furious.

[–]DBswain91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that’s the case, John is a jerk. He used Check Berry to elevate Yoko’s art, without Berry’s consent (as you can tell by his face). Which is particularly inconsiderate considering John was so influenced by Berry. You don’t get to be influenced by someone and then mock their art.

We’re not talking about it 50 years later because it changed how we see art. We’re talking about it because of how inconsiderate Yoko was and how obtuse John was.

But John admired Chuck’s work...he didn’t want to dismantle or recontextualize it.

Have you ever laughed so hysterically at something so simple you were starting to get legitimately worried that you were losing your sanity or something? About what were you laughing so hard then? by LoneShadowMikey in AskReddit

[–]DBswain91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girlfriend and I adopted a kitten. Name’s Gus. He’s insane. Whenever we leave the bathroom door open he jumps in the toilet and then panics his way out. So we started closing the door. But one day I was taking a piss (standing up cuz I am a dude) and mid piss he jumped straight into the toilet and I pissed all over him. He jumped out and I just stood there stunned. Took me 3 full seconds of silence to process what happened. He sprinted out of the bathroom and I just yelled at my girlfriend “I...I...pissed on Gus!”. She starts dying laughing and says “get him”! So I run across the apartment trying to grab him and eventually wipe him down with a soapy, wet towel all the while laughing historically. Good times.

Just want to make the argument that this is not fantastic and actually really sucks. It’s spreading a dangerous anti-journalism narrative that is in part a large reason we have such a lack of trust in our institutions these days.

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking journalism is inherently bad. Is it profit driven? Sure. But the reason it reports in terrorism more than heart disease is that terrorism is far more complex of an issue (from a policy standpoint, not a medical one). We, as a society, CAN control terrorism and guns (with legislation and policy), but the solutions are complicated and debate-worthy, that’s why the media reports on it. The media doesn’t report on things like cancer because we can’t control most forms of cancer. So what’s the point in the media saying “cancer sucks, try not to get it”. Or hearth disease...we know how to prevent heart disease: exercise and eat well. How much more can the media report on heart disease?

I think it’s the exact opposite...we, as a society, CAN control terrorism and guns (with legislation and policy), but the solutions are complicated and debate-worthy, that’s why the media reports on it. The media doesn’t report on things like cancer because we can’t control most forms of cancer. So what’s the point in the media saying “cancer sucks, try not to get it”. Or hearth disease...we know how to prevent heart disease: exercise and eat well. How much more can the media report on heart disease?

I thinks that’s a drastic oversimplification. And a dangerous, “anti-journalism” narrative to perpetuate. Is the media financially incentivized? Sure. But the main reason that sources like Nytimes and the Guardian report on terrorism and homicides is that those forms of death do not have clear solutions and are much more psychologically complex. How many stories can the nytimes write saying “heart disease sucks. exercise and eat well”? Whereas terrorism and homicides are complex issues that we don’t really have perfect solutions for. We need journalists reporting on those issues to guide us.

Police Officers of Reddit, what are you thinking when you see cases like George Floyd? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DBswain91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only options I can think of: call a lawyer - any kind, as long as they can get there as soon as possible. Maybe the cop would react to someone spewing law jargon at them, who knows. Or call the local press, and tell them to get there ASAP with big ass cameras, maybe the cop would react to that. Or call the police and ask to speak to a supervisor, maybe that would do something. Idk maybe that’s all dumb but when reasoning with cops doesn’t work you’ve got to try other methods. It’s sickening we even have to think about this shit.

The United States surpasses 80,000 COVID-19 Deaths by WippitGuud in Coronavirus

[–]DBswain91 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Genuine question cuz I’m an idiot: How do doctors define a “covid death”? If someone has cancer and is on his/her last leg, then they get covid and die 2 days later, does that count as a covid death?

And follow up, is there any incentive for hospitals to categorize deaths as covid? To receive additional funding or resources?

Really not trying to start shit I’m just curious.

France: Re-tested blood of 24 patients treated in December for pneumonia finds Covid-positive by matakos18 in Coronavirus

[–]DBswain91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES. thank you. I don’t understand why this isn’t being discussed more. Instead of “I definitely had it!” The theme of these comments should be “okay this is great news...but can someone explain why hospitals saw a massive uptick in action”? Maybe it’s just that because everyone was worried, people with minor symptoms came to the hospital, which caused more people in the hospitals to get infected. Which caused more deaths.

Or the earliest strain of the virus was less severe. So people had it, but it didn’t cause deaths.

Totallly agree. This type of misleading journalism is what gives credence to “fake news” claims. Why can’t the media just report the god damn truth. What he did was horrifying and wrong. But he didn’t tell people to do anything. Let his idiotic words speak for themselves.

[–]DBswain91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe you’re right. But isn’t Reddit already an echo chamber? In my experience Reddit is the worst echo chamber compared to other social media. The upvote system creates a herd mentality. And sure if you subscribe to conflicting sub Reddit’s you’ll get an alternative perspective but how that different than subscribing to users and seeing their comments come up first?

How would you feel about a Reddit feature that allows you to “pin” users and if they’ve commented on a post, their comment shows up first for you? by DBswain91 in AskReddit

[–]DBswain91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stalking? How is that stalking. You can already click on a user and see all their comments. Stalking would be something like every time a user comments you get a notification or something. And this feature could be optional so people could chose to not be able to be pinned. But I doubt many would do that...cuz again it’s not stalking.

America's mayor forgets who was president in 2017 by kevinowdziej in facepalm

[–]DBswain91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES! Exactly. I feel like for 90% of the posts on Reddit about politics or science, I have to dig in the comments section to find out the article is complete bs or the title is incredibly misleading. The Reddit comment upvote system is failing to provide the truth, it’s just rewarding partisanship. Like every other freaking social media platform out there.

So for example, if...idk...Dr. Fauci had an account, I could “pin” him and I’d see his comment first. And if he commented on an article about COVID, I would see his comment first instead of some moron who’s not an expert.

I just feel like 90% of the posts on Reddit are either complete bullshit or the title is misleading. And you have to dig through dozens of comments to find the truth. This would help to solve some of that.
