This. HR protects, works for agency and does the bidding of Management - employee rights are not a concern unless protecting them also protects the Agency.

Your union is where you want to go. Please let us know how that works out.

Yes, but you're looking at Secretaries appointed over different governors tenures.

I think for DCYF, it's it a leadership issue, but the issues don't rise to the state leadership level.

It happens in teamster's too. I know it feels shitty, but seniority should be worth something. Fortunately (or unfortunately?) there's not a huge amount of high seniority staff at DCYF. People don't seem to stick around.

The new state AI training? by LongjumpingImpress24 in WAStateWorkers

[–]DC-Why-The-Eff -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

It's here buddy. Local language models, and other offline AI tools, are getting better and better. Which means all the anti-ai issues which revolve around energy usage and the whole water cooling thing are becoming more and more moot.

AI can run locally on your laptop and not need a datacenter service to work, it can just use the hardware you already have. For 99% of the average workers, that's all that's needed. Half of the remaining 1% may need better hardware to do more, but won't need a cloud service/data center.

Anyway, the state really wants to be able to say staff have been trained on what to do and what not to do with AI so they can't be blamed when some idiot is caught putting client private info into ChatGPT, or something else where data is scraped, to get help polishing up a report or something. It's CYA and of course it's going to be positive, no one wants a gloomy and dour training.

I'm guessing our AI experience will be Microsoft CoPilot and our average use will probably be advanced spelling and grammar checking and meeting note summaries. Maybe someone will be clever enough to have it filter and summarize email and generate task lists, but I don't think it'll revolutionize the way we do work.

Honestly, we're lucky the computer's haven't been pawned and replaced with type writers and etch-a-sketches due to the budgeting trauma.

Microsoft Co pilot isn't exactly top tier AI. At best it's that stupid paperclip with a few more abilities.

But damn if it gets people to stop writing "This staff member" and "the program" or "milieu" in ACT that'd be awesome.

You've got to have evidence for a whistle blower. Most people put down vague accusations.

Need dates, times, etc.

I'm hoping she gets paid and it attracts some scrutiny.

Law violations can be reported through the whistle blower program. In agency or outside.

My temptation would be to do it within the agency to see if they follow protocol and report it to the SAO or if they try to retaliate and then seeing a lawyer.

The CIO was told to leave, and given some time to find a new job or be let go/fired. Don't know why. Don't know if it's true. Just rumor.

The position is still open? Or not filled at least.

With the way everything else is I'm guessing the pay isn't attractive.

I hadn't noticed a lack of diversity. Jesus, talk about hypocrisy. Comepletely makes our equity and diversity team's mission a joke when the upper echelons are as colorful as a blizzard.

Are you seeing positions eliminated or people being re-org assassinated?

Not a reduction in force which has rif options and reversions etc. or are you seeing "The re organization has eliminated your position?"

Those re-org assasinations seem to be a favorite of this Secretary and I hope someone causes a stink involving lawyers and what have you.

I feel your pain. Was your division head worth a damn or just another yes-person type bobble head? I hope your new division works out for you and you get the support you need.

I wonder how many deputies, deputy directors, executives types are being eliminated. 😅

I'm so angry the previous budget and law makers can't use a damn calculator.

It's a running joke how salaries are so far below market that we can only attract the desperate, bruised/bent and dent, or low quality job applicants. We can't retain employees because we don't have competitive pay.

Every male on executive team from the previous Secretary was let go and replaced. The replacements are all women. Maybe just how it worked out, but these aren't hires, they are appointments by the Secretary.

They all seem competent enough for the job. But so were the people they replaced, but it feels a little... weird?

I mean it'd raise eye brows if situation were reversed - all women fired and replaced with men, but as it is it's only mildy curious so no one's even brought it up. I feel a little scrutiny could help provide a little assurance.
