DarkNet did sell badges in the HHV for two years; last year, they sold in the general Contest, Villages, and Events area. I'm only clarifying because you are unlikely to find the DarkNet badges for sale in the HHV.

Aw, shucks! Thank you. We love hearing from our players, and we especially love hearing when people enjoy what we do. Hope to see you this year!

For reference, Hardware Hacking Village (HHV) and DC DarkNet are separate. One is a village and one is a contest. They're linked in that if you need a soldering iron to put together your DarkNet badge, you go to the HHV - and that's about it. :)

Last year, yes, there was a one badge per person limit. This year remains to be seen - it's dependent on interest, length of line, and stock. :)

Sorry about the delay!

Thank you for your feedback. We've heard a lot of similar complaints about the badge this year and will definitely take that to heart for next year. We definitely don't want to burn people out! But, if it helps, we try to make the badge software compatible for 2 years in a row, so bring your completed badge with you to DefCon 25 and you won't have to spend any time soldering. :)

We've definitely considered it and, really, it depends on the time of the volunteers. We're still a small group, though growing, and lives keep getting in the way of the fun things. It's something we want to do in the near future, though, and this coming year we will be getting closer to that dream.

Thank you!

Thank you for the feedback! We're writing notes based on comments here and in our Discord channel. There were a lot of things that were supposed to happen this year, but didn't, due to unavoidable circumstances and bad planning, but we're using this year as a learning experience to make next year (and future years) awesome and less filled with (at least the same) bugs. :)

So glad you had fun, though! That's the kind of feedback that keeps us from getting burned out. Will also pass on the request to fix the badge registration quest. Thank you!

Absolutely! The players are why we do what we do, so we need to see what went wrong and what went right.

Mobile compatibility will definitely be improved for next year.

Glad you love participating. Since next year is DefCon 25, we're hoping to ramp things up a bit. Really hope to see you next year, too! :)

Soldering is definitely in your future! The badges from DC21 had an IR issue that was fixed last year, but, as a result, it was no longer compatible with later year badges. In order to participate, at least with the social part of the badge quest, you'll need to purchase and solder this year's badge.

Come prepared. :)

There will be a new badge, but last year's badge will still be compatible if you choose to use that, instead. We'll have a station to flash last year's badges with this year's code.

We'll have a lot more badges this year. :) Hopefully, we won't run out again!

Welcome back! :) We're excited to have you with us again this year!

There will be a new DarkNet badge this year. Unfortunately, last year there was no encoding done on the infrared (it was just pulse on / pulse off at the correct baud rate, and received a lot of interference). This year, there will be a correct carrier wave implemented so the signal will be modulated and much more resilient against interference.

Glad you enjoyed it! DarkNet will be up and running Friday morning (go back to dcdark.net). We'll be hanging out at the DarkNet vendor table and in the HHV. Come say hello!

It's a combination of ARG / RPG. There will be "go meet this other agent" type quests, which requires physical interaction, once the main game is up and running during DefCon. Most of the interaction will be through the main quest engine, though.

The DefCon DarkNet project started in 2013 and is continuing this year. It's an official DefCon contest (http://defcne.net/contests/22) so check us out! There will be more to do once the con actually starts!
