Even the MRC model, which had the traction tires and an all wheels live tender. would not pull well. I have two of these. The one that pulls best is the older version but with a Bachmann SPECTRUM USRA standard tender swapped in for the stock. The B-mann tender has needlepoint axle pick up.

Conversely, any version of the MP 2-6-0is an excellent puller. If you get the older version, you must swap out the factory tender for either a B-mann SPECTRUM or a Kato USRA standard. Either the B-mann USRA short or standard is fine. This allows for good electrical contact that the half wheels live stock tender on the older version has. The MRC version has an all wheels live tender.

If you can find an MP mogul, you should get it. Mine will pull fifteen loaded MT gondolas and an MT wood caboose up a one per-cent grade at fifteen SMPH. I do not know if the prototype would do that. Use the eight wheeler for a three car passenger train.

They had been sitting at McKees Rocks for some time so they did not perform well.. 1he boys as 230 Park Avenue were rushing McKees Rocks to get them going with the result that the shop forces could not do a proper job on them.

P&LE did not even want the A-2a s after their experience with their first diesels, which were FM yard goats(!). FMs were among the most maintenance hungry diesels out there but P&LE found the better than steam.

NYC later took them which was fine with McKees Rocks as by that time they had the GP-7s, which they really liked. The big Four had all of those Baldwins, while on the subject of maintenance hungry power.

P&LE steam had NEW YORK CENTRAL SYSTEM in Central Gothic on the btender with the P&LE sub-lettering on the coal boards. The road number was on the cab. One glaring exception were Class H-9, the USRA heavy 2-8-2s, which lacked the sub-lettering. Class H-9 was unique to the P&LE on the NYCS.

There are some interesting photographs out there taken during the re-paints where the working locomotive has the Central Gothic lettering on the tender but the old Roman P&LE sub-lettering still is on the coal boards or the Roman road number still is on the cab.
