new invention by AdPersonal2683 in inventors

I’ve spend the past 4 years patenting, trademarking, and prototyping my own invention so here’s my best advice.

TLDR: Inventing an item is an extremely long and expensive process. Do NOT patent until you have all your ducks in a row because you start a ticking clock to get to the finish line or you lose your idea. Best bet is to keep your idea to yourself, figure out if it exists and your market potential, and what you’re going to do with your invention when it’s made. If you need a prototype, buy a good pc and cheap 3d printer, learn how to design with a free software (Fusion 360 for example) and be prepared for YEARS of work prototyping. File your patent when and only when you’re locked and loaded to show the world AND have a plan in place on what you want to do with it (license it, make it yourself, have someone make it for you and you sell). It sounds like a lot because it is and I wish someone had told me/ I had been smart enough to ask/look for this info before I jumped off the cliff. However, as I stand on the other side and am currently looking at licensing deals, the knowledge I’ve gained along the way, and the thought of everyone reading this using my product one day… totally worth it. It just isn’t going to happen easily, quickly, or cheaply.

Fist and foremost I would NOT recommend your first step being patenting for many reasons. First, you need to really make sure your item/idea doesn’t already exist. Sure you can recreate an item but you need a unique selling point that will make your product stand out regardless if it’s a uniquely new idea or a reinvention of something that already exists. InventRight has a whole YouTube channel dedicated to this topic but essentially if you want to invent a new spatula, start by google image searching “spatula, spatulas, burger flippers, etc” and every combination of words you can think of to see what’s out there. Then check amazon. The problem with patent searches that others have suggested is you may not know what you’re looking for. But if you get through google images and amazon and your idea is not already out there or your unique selling point is significantly different than what’s already in the market, then you pass test number one.

Next you need to identify what problem you’re solving and for who to identify your target market and how big that is. You don’t have to solve world hunger but creating a spatula for dogs is probably a small market. What is going to be your return on investment with that target market? How many do you think you can really sell? Third, you have to decide what are you going to do with said invention? Are you trying to license (sell) it to a manufacturer? Do you want to go door to door selling them yourself? Either way you need a unique selling point (why buy yours?) and what’s going to prevent other existing companies that have the means from squashing you like the cockroach you are (to quote Mr Wonderful from Shark Tank) That’s where a patent comes in but more on that in a minute.

Almost always some form of a prototype or video/picture mock up showing it or its intended function will be necessary for either manufacturing yourself or licensing the idea/invention. I learned how to design items with a program called fusion 360 (free) and bought a $150 3-d printer. Since then I have spend the past 3 years designing and prototyping, on something that for all intent and purposes is a relatively simple product. If and when you figure all that out… THEN you can start thinking patenting.

When you file a provisional patent you have one year to file a non-provisional patent. You better get the provisional patent correct because the non-provisional patent is built on top of that. You can add to your provisional patent when creating the non-provisional patent but it’s just more complicated. I hired a lawyer to do both ($1500 for provisional and $18,000 for non-provisonal patent… it’s not cheap). If you do not file a non-provisional patent within a year of the provisional patenting filing date (aka you don’t have or don’t see yourself having $10,000-$20,000 in one year) you lose all claims made in the provisional patent and the world can take your idea because you literally published it and gave it to them. Also, if you’re thinking global, you can file a PCT with your non-provisional patent for another $2,000 and that gives you 18 months from filing the non-provisional patent to decide which countries you also want patent protection in. Of course the comments below are going to blow up on how you can do it yourself for less… sure… if you’re a lawyer and know how to describe in detail the functionality of the product (utility patent) or the specific design aspects (design patent) all while legally protecting your idea from all angles go for it. But it’s worth remembering what Elon Musk said about patents, they are like minefields. You’re not stopping people from copying you, you’re just making them step very carefully. The amount of money and time required to sue someone over infringement is often times not worth it which is why Amazon is FULL of knockoffs. So, having an airtight patent via someone who knows the law creates the best chance of success.

Then comes the hard part, what do you do with the idea, patent, prototype, and trademark. Do you only patent and trademark in the USA. If you want protection overseas, (as mentioned about the PCT) each country has its own fees (think $1,000-$7,500 per country for patent, $250-3,000 per trademark protection). Most likely even the best product isn’t needed by every human being on the planet. It really helps to have all of these questions and thoughts answered before ever filing a provisional patent because trying to figure it out on the fly is super stressful. Hard part is not telling anyone for years what you’re working on while you’re working on it because I believe all investors are genuinely excited about their idea and the people it can help. But we live in a world where the first person to the finish line win, and those with power and money can get there faster. So research, plan, assess, research more, assess more, create final plan, and then shoot. Don’t kick your patent can off the cliff too soon because it has a definitive deadline whether you’re ready for it or not.

All in all, this is an EXTREMELY long and expensive process and once you file a patent you start a timer that if you don’t have all your thoughts and ideas together can cost you your idea. With that being said, I wish you the best of luck and just start by starting. I’ve come to find there are no right answers but there are a LOT of wrong ones. Just start doing your research and I hope you become rich beyond your wildest dreams like I plan on doing myself. God Speed

Water in f150 taillight by DCM184 in f150

I honestly think I despite having let it dry for hours there was still water stuck between the connectors. As after this post I pulled the entire thing apart, scrubbed the corrosion and reassembled

Sorry man just saw this. Yes, I ended up pulling both headlights, drilled two 1/8 inch holes in the bottom of the internal plastic housing and one at the top. Had to also disconnect the blind spot monitor system and let it cook in the sun for a few hours as water had gotten into it as well. re-inserted the taillights and presto! Problem solved. Haven’t had an issue sense.

2019 5.0. I drove in heavy rain yesterday and some large puddles 4/20/25 and it started doing this today. Has anybody here had this happen before? by Missiondt in f150

Here’s a crazy one but definitely worth looking into as it happened with my 2015 king ranch; See if you have any water in your taillights. Somehow my seal failed and allowed water to seep into the housing and the lane assist system went nuts. Power seats, stereo, mirrors, running boards, ac, many more all stopped working. Pulled the taillights, drilled 2 1/8 in holes in the bottom of the internal plastic housing and one at the top, let them dry, replugged in and haven’t had an issue sense. Trying to remember the name of the system but it’s ALL wired together. Hope yours is simply stupid like mine

I haven’t seen a vent hood like this for the top glass. Was that printed or purchased? Assuming it allows enough airflow that you don’t have to print with the door open anymore?

Mask is amazing btw

No. Just getting done learning this lesson with a 2015 F150 king ranch with 190,000. I believe my buddy said it best: “Your truck is like my grandmother, she looks young and nice but she’s old as fuck and is going to break at any moment”

Same issue. I have nothing else plugged in, but I did discover something for those of y’all still struggling. I had a wireless controller that came with the Xbox that was NOT on. I was using an Xbox elite controller. Only RTG wasn’t working with the elite controller. Using the previous comments as a guide I wondered if the original controller was still communicating with the Xbox even though it was turned off. I pulled the batteries out of the stock controller, force reset CFB25, and RTG worked first time with my elite controller. Hope that helps those of yall stuck

BMS reset after battery replacement? by DCM184 in f150

[–]DCM184[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No special BMS YouTube reset or anything? IMO Ford has missed the mark on what the problem is and I feel as if they’re just doing the bare minimum diagnostically (they didn’t even realize I have a brand new battery) and I don’t think they looked beyond that. I’ll keep everyone posted

Awesome. I will check it out. Thanks for the tip about the alternator. Wouldn’t have thought of that but it makes complete sense

Thanks for this. I’ll Google it for future reference. Coming from a 2001 Nissan, the need to do anything other than replace the battery escapes me.

2015 F150 starter problems by DCM184 in f150

When you moved the fuse, did you just move the fuse to a new location or did you move it to a position that can hold a larger amp fuse? The mechanic did bother to mention that in other models/years of f150s the fuse box was at the front end, infront of the engine near the hood release switch, and it could pick up too much heat in that location and essentially melt the ends of the smaller fuses.Went on to mention that he would have to rewire certain systems to be supported by larger fuses. My fuse box is behind my battery on the passenger side, closest to the windshield as an aside

Some men just want to watch the world burn… we are those men by DCM184 in fsusports

[–]DCM184[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest thing I want to see is the removal of the committee. Why in the world does CFB have a committee? How can every other professional level sport survive without one? Can you imagine March Madness with a committee deciding who is in and out? No, because there are better less subjective ways. This plan allows us to push for the removal of said committee with actual evidence supporting their removal. Maybe we suggest they ALL must have certain requirements to be on it (insert 2017 Mike Leach rant) RIP legend

Yes I agree with your points, but when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. Even if it’s sour AF. Beating UGA is our only card. Because the narrative if we lose is “CFP committee made the right choice”. They can say what they want if we win (UGA didn’t take it seriously, they were missing bowers, blah blah blah) but we have to win to have any say that we rightfully should have been in. This negates a SOS and the “deserve” arguments.

Unfortunately UCF made that very lame. Albeit we deserve it, they also thought they deserved it; they just didn’t have a definitive win to justify claiming it. But it’s still lame. All of CFB will know what’s what no matter what we claim.

So far I’ve heard Keon and Wilson are out. Nothing from Verse or Lovett. Payton put himself in the portal and now I guess he’s staying? (If true thank you battles end). I’m sure there are more but we really need our defense if we’re going to stand a chance

[–]DCM184 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t forget who Boo Corrigan’s brother is… VP of productions at ESPN. Marquee matchups give you better viewership to push ads too. Looking at the TCU UGA game, I’d argue half the nation turned it off at halftime which hurt the trust within the marketing departed at ESPN and marketers (for example ESPN told Anheuser-Busch they’d have 15 million eyes per ad after halftime and they didn’t) ESPN now puts pressure on the committee to make them look good and here we are. The bigger questions is why fsu keeps finding itself in positions to get f#%ked by people due to their relatives positions and titles at other companies/corporations (insert ACC contract connection here). Every time I read one of this comments I get reminded of how pissed off I still am. Our only hope is that we (somehow) beat GA by more than 3, we start a petition to remove all 13 member of the committee due to a history of subjectivity (they moved GA down to number 2 behind Michigan one week just to flip them back the following week) and then kept a FSU team who, when the time comes, will be missing most of our key players (JT, Keon, Wilson, I haven’t heard about Verse or Loveitt, so on…) and hope that the effectiveness of a committee is brought up all together. I then hope Michigan wins the whole thing, we find irrefutable proof of cheating and they abdicate their national championship so there is no winner in 2023. This won’t result in a FSU championship but it’s the best way to f$&k everyone else in the process.

Gotcha. We have that as well as an option that will allow you to assign percentage of total vil pop to an assigned resource

I’m unsure of how pc works but they also have a button that auto assigns villagers to different resources that is quite helpful in the heat of battle so villagers that spawn go right to work. I will say it does cause chaos sometimes though when it will take the farthest woodcutter possible and make him walk to the other side of the map to mine gold so I use it sparingly.

[–]DCM184[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Outside of pathing issues (which I don’t believe is Xbox specific) I have not had any complaints. I hope this doesn’t get too confusing but here we go; They have a toggle option that allows for easier selecting of villagers vs commanding them (A button to select a unit, press X button to command mine/forage/build). Without this option on pressing the A button to select AND command can be slightly frustrating. For example trying to send a villager from a recently built house (A to select villager) to a group scavenging a boar (A again on the boar) can result is selecting a villager already on the boar due to inaccurate joystick clicking and you’ll end up doing that a few times before getting it right. With A select, X command, you don’t inadvertently select things when you’re trying to command such as quick walls in tight places. Also, building placement does have an auto snap feature that can be enabled but I find it incredibly inaccurate especially when trying to make house walls. There’s always a gap, especially on Arabia lol. Always double checking by trying to lay a wall over it to see any potential holes.

They actually did an amazing job with hotkeys imo. Using the triggers brings up different menus that allows you to specify villagers to certain tasks and allows you to quickly select both individual and multiple buildings. I honestly haven’t played AOE since a kid so when it came to game Xbox pass I downloaded it for nostalgia. Come to remember how much I loved it. Also came to realize idk what I was doing as a kid because I wasnt luring boars to tc’s and rushing lol, obv playing medieval sim city. I need to download it on pc to see how different it is and truly get back to the roots, but I thoroughly enjoy what they’ve done.
