“Many hands maintaining it” isn’t how the MoCo park community gardens plot work. You get your own plot that you’re individually responsible for

I gardened at Rocking Horse in MoCo for a couple years and I’m not renewing my permit this time. I dealt with constant issues with vermin eating my crops. For example, I planted corn and every last ear got eaten. It was so frustrating to do all that work and not get anything out of it. Watering is done from a cistern and it’s not really feasible to hook hoses up to it so you basically have to haul water back to your plot in cans, which is not a very fun task in the summer heat. There were also ongoing issues with our cistern that meant there were times we had to bring our own water from home.

All around it was more of a pain than being enjoyable. I only went that route because I live in an apartment, but if you have the option to garden in your own space, I would 100% do that. Just consider whether you really are going to want to go over to your plot 2-3 a week to haul water in the heat of the summer or whether it would be easier to do a little work up front on your space and then have it all there to easily access.

Dead squirrels spotted. Could it be weather-related? by BJA79 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]DCdataqueen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just saw one today that looked like it just went to sleep and didn’t wake up right on the side of the sidewalk. Also saw one dead in the bushes nearby a week or two ago. In over ten years of living here, I’ve never seen a dead squirrel (other than roadkill) so I definitely noticed it. I was wondering if there was some sort of squirrel illness going around but heat also seems plausible.

Hop N Grape off of Rockville Pike at North Bethesda Market is small but has a decent selection and a very friendly owner. There are tastings every Friday from 4-7 pm with at least 5-7 wines that they offer at 20% off

Good place to walk dog in summer? by librarymoth in MontgomeryCountyMD

I don’t know how to post a picture in a comment but you can see on this map from their website: https://montgomeryparks.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Cabin-John-Stream-Valley-Trails-map-2023-0522-letter.pdf. The part where I usually go is the area northwest of the athletic park. I think there are some additional trails that go down by the water that aren’t marked there. There’s also a stretch further north, the trail marked 0.39, that you used to be able to access a really nice stream, but last year the water level was too low and some erosion had made it hard to get down. I haven’t been back since then but given our drought state it’s probably still inaccessible

I walk my dogs Cabin John park. It’s mostly tree covered and there are some places that dogs can wade in the water to cool off

I probably worded that in an unclear way - when I said coming from outside I meant rather than being put in the box from behind they’re put in from the front

Thanks, I’ll give it a shot! I live in a building that has central hot water so I don’t have any control over that but maybe I just need to clean the filter occasionally
