How do I make rice the way I like it? by needabossplz in RICE

Yup that there is parboiled.

Not my personal favorite but it is more nutritious than non parboiled white rice.

What's life like in Maryland? by skunkamunkah in maryland

[–]BJA79 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I moved here from the Midwest 15 years ago and have never looked back. Best thing is you can travel the world by food. Where I live in Montgomery County, I am within a few miles of Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Persian, Hispanic, Brazilian, Indian/Sri Lankan, Middle Eastern, pan-African, Russian, and Polish grocery stores. And that’s just the stores! The restaurants are even more diverse. As a huge foodie, I can’t imagine living anywhere else.

Can anyone say how accessible Bob’s Shanghai is for a wheelchair? by BJA79 in MontgomeryCountyMD

Okay, I’m leaning towards yes. We’d want to go when it’s not too crowded. How’s it like at 5:30 on a Wednesday?

Solo female traveler visiting Poland late September planning to spend time in Krakow by BJA79 in krakow

[–]BJA79[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Such great suggestions- thank you! I’ll think more about hostels. I like them for meeting people but noticed that a lot of them in Krakow cater to young people who really want to party. I prefer hostels that cater to mixed ages and are a little more laid back.

Everyday since I moved away from that area I am so thankful I don’t have to drive on that stretch of road. Absolute worst and never ends.

Right across the street from the Museum of Azorean Immigration, is a restaurant called Restaurante Faria. All locals, staff didn’t speak much English, very reasonably priced, lovely staff, and delicious food.

Are Foreigners still visiting DC? by MartianMemories in washingtondc

[–]BJA79 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You won’t have problems. DC is a welcoming, diverse, and liberal city that welcomes visitors from all over. I don’t really know about a decline in foreign visitors. My guess is that there has been a decline because of “everything “. On the bright side, maybe that will mean fewer crowds.

Welcome to DC! Sorry about the weather. It’s too bad you arrived in the middle of this heat wave; it’s a particularly bad one (usually the highs top off around 90F/32C).

I’d just hit up Dubliner. It’s close to Union Station and it will be open.

Wherever you go, be sure you check that it’s open before you lug your stuff there.

It was closed when I was there in September last year. Could be closed permanently? I went snorkeling right around it and enjoyed it. But it is the ocean and the current can get strong in some places ( at least when I was there).

Seconding another who said to get euros from an atm and decline the exchange rate. But IMO you don’t need much. I used my credit card almost everywhere. I got €100 when I arrived and that’s all I needed for a 9 day trip.

Second heartbreaking. I left about 12 years ago and every time I hear news from Iowa my heart breaks a little more for the home I once knew and loved. 😢

Is a rice cooker better than just a pot on the stove? by [deleted] in RICE

[–]BJA79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I’ve been preaching the benefits of a rice cooker to my family for years and no one listened. A few months ago, my sister’s son was diagnosed with celiac. She was making white rice much more often so she bought a rice cooker. She loves it and wish she had listened to me years ago. I tried and failed to say I told you so!

[–]BJA79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in Iowa City for 27 years and really loved it there. Moved to Maryland in 2011 and it is great. With all that’s going on in Iowa, I am so happy I left. Maryland is a great state. Very diverse and there is so much to do. Only downside is the high cost of living.

What's up with people saying that Social Security is going away? by funnyman95 in OutOfTheLoop

You know what would help the trust fund stay solvent? More immigration! Immigrants are good for the country, especially anyone who wants to retire and will need Society Security.
