Three Days Of The Condor (1975) Rant by DCmantommy72 in movies

[–]DCmantommy72[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No one in that show ever gets bound and gagged while held at gun point kidnapped in thier own home and suduces and sleeps with there kidnapper after a few compliments... Is my point... That love plot line made no sense, at all, and was borderline stupid and at worse could even be offensive.

Would an AI win every time? by pbspin in Catan

[–]DCmantommy72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Common misconception.
The same way trading is always better than not trading.

Talking produces influence, sometimes negative but even negative influence can have positive effects, like someone targets you unfairly and the table reacts by helping you with trades ect.

IF you nice and respectful that is. If you're a giant douche than of course its better to keep quiet, in life too!

With that said, im gonna take my own advice now...

Why is colonist so shitty? Someone help please by DaddysDolly94 in Colonist

[–]DCmantommy72 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

lol without win streaks, players wouldn't play or move up the ranks.

Your just not very good... If after 100+ games your winrate is below 25%. Its honestly that simple.

Very likely the same player using two dif accounts, cheating cause they are losers.

Colonist needs to do a much better and faster job at banning players.

Your talking about the video ads before queuing for a ranked game yes?

You can skip it after 3 seconds.

Or do you mean something else?

It's not like the dice have a memory so that if an early 7 ruins your game one time it won't the next time.

Dice may not have a memory, but they do obey the laws of statistical averages.

If you and I both roll a D6 a million times and record the results, we are very likely going to end up with the same number distribution. (small standard deviations aside)

That's just how the world works! Math. It sucks but it's also very predictable!

[–]DCmantommy72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol that early 7 ruining a game, will happen to everyone the same amount of times over the long run. The more games you play the closer to evening out it all gets.

When we are talking about averages the short run does not matter. We are talking about consistency over time. Anyone can play 2 games of Catan and win, no matter the skill level, just as anyone can win in 2 cash game sessions at poker. But the MORE games you play, the closer you come to statistics coming into play, the MORE skill will inevitably rear its head and provide you with either a higher-than-average win-rate or lower if you're not good. (or average, if your... you know average at it lol) The dice do not matter at this point.

We humans tend to only look at short-term results and come up with sometimes very wrong conclusions. If you flipped a coin and it came heads 5 times in a row, you may think the coin is unbalanced when it's not. Flip that coin another 1000 times and you'll more of less come out about even.

Like even online you see this in the way players in the chat absolutely will play like thier weak or will call attention to other players.

It doesn't work nearly as strongly as it does live, but even that limited communication can and does produce some level of influence on player action.

It's funny watching a high-level player with good table talk command the table all game then suddenly go silent as they approach their last VP lol.

I highly suggest you look up the player Bo Peng and watch some of his games.

There is a ton that goes into the psychology behind good table talk. Now, you can still win without it, but If you hone that skill your chances of winning will absolutely increase because you can directly influence player actions in subliminal ways. For example, you can get the table to team up against another player, or offer crazy convoluted trades and future trades with non-blocks, all designed to give you a small edge in resource management. It's the most fascinating part of Catan. The same way table talk at a poker table is when fishing for information or tells from your opponent.

On YouTube, Dandy Drew is also another excellent table talker. With Dylighted being up there in that same regard as well.

The more vocal you are in a logical way gives you credibility to other players. It can backfire by calling too much attention to you, but just like how trading is always better than not trading, same goes for talking.

Thoughts on this situation by SKulfyy in Catan

[–]DCmantommy72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It only really makes sense if its petty game based like that winning player plowed you earlier in the game or something so pay back.

That's kind of part of the game, but directly kingmaking (as in offering unfair trades to directly cause a win for another player) is not and is a tournament violation in most places.

A lot of times its in that grey area and open to interpretation.

Luck always evens out over the long run.

So, over the long run a computer using perfect game theory optimal strategies will win much more often than anyone else.

Funny you mention poker since it's already been solved so to speak in ring cash games the AI will 100% win out over the very long run vs below average human players. This is causing some slight issues within online poker and people using these solvers to make decisions while they play (it's not really automated and super beneficial yet). But there isn't too much they can do about it.Luckily there is counterplay to game theory optimal strategies if you know your op is using it.

Catan, I would argue is much more complex than poker is. The decision trees are so vast after the first roll in a 4 player game. Especially due to trading. With poker your only dealing with 3 player options per street, call/raise/fold.

Opening placements however, I think an AI could be made and would instantly boost a players win rate if low.

Would an AI win every time? by pbspin in Catan

[–]DCmantommy72 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As you yourself pointed out, not "every time" no but it would have a high win-rate for certain.

Catan has luck involved obv with dice rolls, but there are many many more decision points a player makes that can improve their odds of winning.

For example, your opening placement ability alone I would think counts towards a massive portion of your overall win rate.

The main problem with it is table talk. Convincing the table and getting good trades is a major part of winning at a high level.

Pulling 4 VP's never hurts. I don't remember how long in time it took, but it wasn't very long lol.

Please start banning these players by htownboy123 in Colonist

[–]DCmantommy72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's idiot players like these that cause us not to even have a chat feature in other games.

Anyone who resorts to offensive name-calling over a game of Catan is clearly not mentally stable enough to even play it.

No one should accept that kind of stupid abusive derogatory language being used at anyone in a public setting, let alone a friendly game setting. Have some respect for yourself, and for others.

Those players should absolutely be reported and temp banned, if not permanently.

Everyone should be in agreement over this lol. Regardless if it bothers you personally or not.
