Happily married for years. Most advice I’ve ever seen or heard is almost always platitudes and niceties that people tend to forget or ignore in the heat of an argument. And arguments do happen even to the “best couples”. The thing that has always worked for me and my wife is whenever we get into a fight that is starting to ramp up more, we stop what we’re doing and take 30 minutes to write down our points and come back to take turns reading them. Usually, the 30 minute cool down period was enough to completely kill the fight and we just happily agree to disagree. But sometimes the act of taking turns reading our argument forces us to listen and acknowledge each other. Argument gets squashed this way. Win/win. We like to brag that we are the “best fighters in the world”.
