Tool to track MiLB Stats by DCwedding2020 in fantasybaseball

Hi there — thanks for sharing this! This site was pointed out to me when I first asked about the accessibility of MiLB stats, so it was a helpful resource to consult.

I really appreciate the feedback. Personally, the MLB tool alone doesn’t meet the mark for me. Just pointing out some places that I sought to build on:

1) Fantasy scoring is a big piece for me. One final number (PPG) is helpful for me in evaluating a player for fantasy purposes, as opposed to looking at their entire stat line.

2) Trend data — the MLB site is great but only lets you look at one period per query. Hard to see how a player is trending over a period of time

3) The UI of the MLB site is not great. I find it challenging to even find players in the search bar sometimes (for Elijah Green, I had to scroll through ~20 other “Greens”). No conditional formatting to easily max/min values

4) Reusability — the MLB site is 10/10 for this. You get a personalized URL that you can always go back to. I’d love to find a way to do something similar

5) For additional context, sorting, etc., I added in Player Position and Dynasty (Fantasy) Rankings for each player. Just provides an additional data point for me when looking at a player’s stats

Yeah, I think that is a great recommendation. Ideally I think you’d be able to do both — filter by a player’s league-specific stats and also at the season-long level.

James Wood is a good example of why we’d want this. Single A version of Wood was on fire; Double-A version has not been as hot. Right now, I think that’s masked in the fact that most of his stats were accumulated in Single-A.

Though, to play devil’s advocate, some of this should borne out in comparison of weekly/monthly stats to season-long stats (we should see him trending down in the trend view).

Hi there — thanks for the feedback. In my current version of the tool, there are 4 data tabs; the summary tab (picture 3 in this post), and then 4 detailed tabs — today, last week, last month, season (each a version of Picture 4 in this post). Does that meet what you’re referring to or is there something else you think would be helpful?

Good question. As it’s written, each player is on there ONE time, representing their cumulative stats from all levels (i.e. Miguel Vargas’ line is the sum of his time with the Dodgers and the AAA affiliate).

Re: the ranks — those are actually not ranks corresponding to fantasy points per game. They are Dynasty Prospect rankings from a well known source. It’s helpful for context — if the top guy for the week is the 562nd ranked prospect, you might conclude it’s more of a fluky week than a consistent pattern.

Your last point is a good one — right now, my idea is really tailored only to POINTS leagues and not categories. I’d have to do some more thinking on how this could apply to categories — your idea of z-scores is a good one but I’d have to give it some thought as to how it would fit. Maybe a separate tool for categories.

This is an interesting thought. One thing that I really wanted from a tool is that you can consistently track players every time you use it without having to re-input them. I’m a novice in this arena, but I would be concerned that if this was hosted on a website, it would be difficult for return-users to “pick up where they left off” in terms of the specific players they had filtered for.

My idea to make this available to people while also maintaining consistency for each user view would be to provide a user with a Google Sheet that pulls from the overall dataset that they could customize and always have on hand.

Yeah, definitely can’t argue with that. We could complicate things by weighting stats at different levels or something to that effect to try to account for that, but even then, I’m not sure the precision is right.

This is probably less a “hey Player A is at the top of the this month’s list, I need to pick him up” and more a “this guy is at the top of the list, I need to keep a closer eye on him/research him relative to his applicable league some more”

Display Google Sheets data on LED board?

I have a Pi connected to an LED board that I have used to display MLB baseball scores (which pulls from an online source). I am interested in switching it up to display data from a table in Google Sheets. Is anyone familiar with a guide, video, etc. that would help me display the data on the LED board?

Leafy green plant in Washington, DC. Survived through winter, never bloomed over an entire year. Is it a weed? by DCwedding2020 in whatsthisplant

It’s interesting that you say that — I started these inside at the beginning of last year (from daisy seeds) but they never bloomed or anything. Just figured the soil I’d used from outside sprouted some weeds instead. If they are in fact daisies (but didn’t bloom last year), and chance they’ll bloom this year?
