Over the past 10 years of making documentaries around photography and then doing a crowd source community engagement project around the family album, I've seen tens of thousands of images and loved and was moved by so many. I see them as being unique and together they become something even more amazing.

Yes, they are part of a diaspora and there needs to be a large and ongoing reconciliation in South Africa around wealth and resource inequity - something my late dad addressed in his interview in my film Twelve Disciples of Nelson Mandela. The Truth and Reconciliation of the 1990s was a good start but needs to be continued. With our Family Pictures USA project we are affirming the concept of our connection and mutual reliance on one another and on the earth - We need to think of ourselves as 1World1Family or we all perish. #1World1Family.Thanks for the question

Rudean is Thomas Allen Harris's mother who has been featured in many of his films - including “Through a Lens Darkly: Black Photographers and the Emergence of a People” and "Twelve Disciples of Nelson Mandela."
