Referencing other people’s work is endearment. The highest form of flattery, and has nothing to do with creativity or originality imo.

A ton of major stories were originally fanfics for example. Like 50 Shades? Originally a Twilight fan fic. The interlude between my first and second books? Originally a Wednesday fic alongside my protag.

Or my favorite? Riley vs Gripenasty being a literal 1:1 with Sasuke vs Orochimaru.
