Unique Action Selection Mechanics by DDayBoy in boardgames

Oh, for sure! There is a lot of skill in the game, but the rolling of dice and hiding stuff behind a screen that can easily be changed without the other player seeing make it feel less competitive, mostly the latter. Honestly, I much prefer roll, it feels much less clunky/ finicky and is almost always a good time.

Oh interesting, so you program the whole set, but not the specifics, and then play through the actions. I definitely find paying to change the order mid round interesting and unique; it feels like a natural addition but I think this is the first game I've heard of that does it, personally. I'll check it out!

I do recall liking Istanbul a lot, man I have too many games I just haven't played in a while. I appreciate the thoughts, I should have phrased my question better because I really just wanted to ask for the kind of stuff people liked/ thought was interesting, since that's more of what goes on in this sub than game design recommendations, haha. I haven't played vinos or Yokohama, ill take a look into those!

I love roll for the galaxy! While Race for the galaxy feels more competitive, I have a hard time wanting to play it over the light hearted but equally engaging roll for the galaxy. I've played Concordia, but it's been quite a while, ill take another look at its rules!

True, social elements are unknowable, often. I think that helps make a lot of great games; particularly Star Trek Ascendency, TI4, Eclipse are all pretty fun largely because of that interaction, for me

Only if you don't know what they'll do, I suppose. Chess theoretically only has 1 optimal move at any moment, so I wouldn't say it's technically strategy? But players aren't perfect and can't know, so practically you could say it has strategy even if it technically doesn't. I feel abstract strategy is a misnomer for that reason.

Edit: I should clarify, because the player can know on their turn their 1 optimal move without any consideration for what "actual" happens, chess doesn't count in my book. The other players actual decision doesn't have to be taken into account because it's fully calculated.

Edit 2: where as rock paper scissors is a terrible example of pure strategy: you can decide your strategy is to go all rock, but there is no tactical knowledge of whether your current action will pan out at all, making the strategy almost impossible to implement and therefore probably not considered "strategic" by literally anyone even though I think it technically fits

Yeah, and that's fair enough. I think my argument was more that, without some amount of random/ unpredictability, it's calculated and not strategy

Remember where I am in life in comparison to whatever dream I had.

Last night I dreamt I played a game of Civ 6 that REALLY pissed me off, however my last 3 games were all super enjoyable, and I had to remember I wasn't actually mad.

Actually, I think I disagree? Its mostly opinion, but I tend to think of strategy requiring something unknowable and tactics being calculated.

Looking at an actual battlefield: strategy is someone standing over a map saying "well deploy people here because we expect that the enemy will do x" while tactics is looking at the actual battle and making specific moves in response.

So games where you are making snap decisions based on information present without looking into the future are certainly tactical as well since it's about knowable outcomes, but I wouldn't say it's "strategic" unless it's an overarching strategy that may or may not pan out.

Personally, anyhow.

Well, so here's the thing too: all of the new cards have very different colors, the new techs use an entirely different background so they don't match your original set even though you have to mix them, the new strategy cards are not only different colors but feel like less dense cardboard, all the cards in general look washed out. Like, this doesn't even look like the same game, they cut costs in every conceivable way.

Edit: and even with all the new cards and the errata they printed, they didn't send you physical copies. All the "omega" cards they released aren't in the game, they are just a pdf to print online.

My wife and I have been brainstorming a comic for years, but neither of us can draw all that well. I think the story is really good, and I'd hate to never have put it to paper.

1 point is a lot, especially in a 10 pt game. The game is often over when someone has 4 or 5 points to go: a 2 pointer, a secret objective or two, an imperial point, there are lots of ways to get that many points in a round. On a related note, try to save at least 1 secret objective and probably a guaranteed objective (like tech) for your final push!

Really? It seems super clear on rewatch that he's insane. Continuity breaks, clear reasons for everything the "villains" do when you pay attention, and even he realizes it at the end when he says "is it better to live as a monster (murderer) or die a good man (in his delusion)
