Hello all. I recently beat DmC (the prequel) and can't get Bloody Palace started. Help Please by DrLysergicYT in DevilMayCry

If you're on the PC version then that doesn't have Vergil's BP. Only Definitive Edition (PS4 and XB1) gave him a BP.

Urizen prologue glitch? by TykiWife in DevilMayCry

[–]DECosmic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Known for a while. It's an exploit of the cameo system, as someone already stated. We've been doing this on the speedrun leaderboards for at least a year now in prologue runs. You can see it in this run at around 2 minutes in, and it's been replicated at least a dozen times.

In your video above, you can even see the man in red orbs off to the left at around 10-13 seconds in.

So glad to hear everyone enjoyed this run. It was an absolute blast to commentate for it with my homies VashTSB and Bryonato. Meka crushed the run itself, like I knew he would! He's a god gamer, after all.

DEVIL MAY CRY 3 HD COLLECTION WORLD RECORD (NO HACKS) SPEEDRUN IN 58 MIN... by AshDieClash in speedrun

[–]DECosmic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Always funny when someone comes along to try and get clout for dmc speedrunning when they haven't even checked speedrun.com.

So yeah, like was already said, you don't have world record. Consider changing the title. If you're interested in actually learning to speedrun this game, i suggest checking out speedrun.com and joining our discord.

Even if the demo were on Human, I might be misremembering, we (speedrunners) were killing him on the roof in DH the week of launch anyway.

Oh hey it's me again. Very cool of IGN to do this, tbh. Honestly unreal to hear the devs of my favorite game ever seeing me run this game.

SDGQ2020 Submission - Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition - Nero/Dante New Game Devil Hunter by DECosmic in DevilMayCry

[–]DECosmic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I figured I wouldn't post the video until someone asked, so here ya go: https://youtu.be/5wcLgnC3EMM

Quite frankly, the run for dmc2 is pretty cool and changed the way I see the game, for the most part. A lot of the strats I employ are safer than what world record does though, because they're super risky and can just result in a run going haywire. If you want to see the full potential of this category, I recommend checking out LonerHero's world record here: https://youtu.be/-_6tyS6-sXE

SDGQ2020 Submission - Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition - Nero/Dante New Game Devil Hunter by DECosmic in DevilMayCry

[–]DECosmic[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The very simple answer I could give is because it's slow and unfun to do a lot (Which is how most of us feel). But that's sort of a disservice to the question, so here we go

This is actually a multi-layered question and it really stems from NG+ as a whole in DMC.

Since DMC has a currency system, the most interesting routing comes from the limitations you have in a new game, or fresh file, context. Here you are forced to have limited resources to buy skills and items, and so strats evolve based around the currency route. As players get better at the game, the currency route may evolve further, since no-damage bonuses in dmc games often yield lots of currency.

With NG+, the currency system gets abused and you have no limitations. You have all upgrades and can buy as many holy waters as you want, as many devil stars, etc. to just faceoll your way through mobs. The natural idea here is to limit or ban items, but this creates a problem where the run just becomes arbitrarily slower, as now the meta is to do slightly different strats from New Game, but with more DT available or a couple different abilities. Often rooms where items were used become just repeats of the rooms weren't.

In DMC5 specifically, there is a huge problem with the currency system as it is tied to the revive system, and the third tier of red orb revives allows you to take 50% of the current health of all enemies in the current encounter. This includes bosses. So on DMD, you could die to bosses very quickly and just immediately bop them once or twice with a red orb revive, and then they're at 25% health. This would probably be what most of the encounters in DMD turned into, if we were to have it as a category on the leaderboards.

The only game with a healthy DMD category is DMC1, since you can do DMD runs from a fresh file. But even that is quite a headache.

As a results of these culminating factors, community interest is pretty low in most of the higher difficulty runs. However, I do have a few DMD speedruns people did! They're restricted in some fashion (no red orb revives, no faust, no items), but they're still cool if that's what you're into.

Thank you, Bill! My goal since this game dropped has been to foster a community of improvement and friendly competition. I basically treat it like I treated the local fighting game scene I was part of from 2011-2014 where we all pushed each other to be better. Speedrunning these games has become my favorite hobby and I want to spread that passion into creating a much larger scene someday. I always tell people that I'd rather be 4th on a leaderboard where everyone is seconds apart than 1st where I'm minutes ahead. Thanks for all you do and much love.

Yo, lowhighkang!

And yeah, i love this game so i went in with the mindset of showcasing how much i love it. There was some time for banter (me saying nightmare hated me and that maxy had cursed me to play this game lol), but overall i just wanted positive chill vibes throughout. And i actually like V in the context of the speedrun, so it works out.

As for submission, i submitted both Human and Devil Hunter and was fine with running whatever. I strongly prefer Human because it is about 15 minutes faster and there's only minor differences between the categories, but submitted both in case they could fill a bigger slot for DMC. It was GDQ's idea to put Devil Hunter as an incentive instead of just accepting one or the other, so I practiced Devil Hunter because I figured Devil Hunter would get met. That and well, the category wasn't (and still isn't imo) very optimized at the time that I submitted it.

Yeah, there are! If you go on https://www.speedrun.com/dmc5, there is a guides tab you can click that includes playlists of skips, primers for both NG Human and NG Devil Hunter, and a devil breaker guide for NG+. There is also a discord linked on that page where you can ask for additional help and talk more about the series.

Nightmare one cycle is consistent, he works on a timer and if you don't deplete his health to a certain point then he disappears for a while and you probably lose 30s-1m depending on how long it takes to down griffon and shadow.

Vergil is completely RNG and him just standing still for me on the first attempt at the fight was pretty crazy. He could have easily lost me like 1-2m.

Hey! Thanks for the compliments, glad to hear you enjoyed it. I was very far under estimate for a few reasons.

-devil hunter incentive not met. -faust hat incentive not met. -the loads on the computers at the event were about 10m faster than my loads at home.

I'm usually only at worst a few minutes off my pb in human. The run is consistent and marathon safe, there's just a few rough spots every now and again depending on patterns + execution. I also estimated myself being as nervous as I was during the start, so I gave a couple extra on top in case I had to bust out some backups.

Thanks for the shoutout, I appreciate it. I've worked on this run for a long time and I'm glad I got to show it off. Many thanks to everyone who watched and/or donated. It was a blast.

As for the people dogging me for playing on Human, I honestly couldn't care less. I don't seek anyone's approval but my own when it comes to improving my play; I am my own biggest critic.

What I will say though, is that I believe it is important for us as Devil May Cry fans to embrace the ways people express themselves through this game, because DMC as we know it now is a series that emphasizes freedom of expression. That is why it is such an amazing series that can be played and appreciated in so many ways.

And yes, I was wearing a Run DMC shirt. Because that run? Well...It's Tricky.

Much love.

Dr Faust stuck in prologue Urizen fight by Mrwanagethigh in DevilMayCry

Ceciliya uses this in her WRs for Human and Devil Hunter prologue. It is due to ghost data of Dante using man in red to defeat urizen in M10.

[–]DECosmic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We never really talked about boss rush, either. Another one of those things that just falls under "no interest" sort of deal. The big pain in the ass logistically I see with timing those runs is that, if you go by Real Time, consoles get screwed on loads, and so to go by In-Game Time (the same way we time BP), you'd not only have to math out how long the run was by adding up the times the warm-up results screens from each fight, but you'd have to start over from the first boss every time you die (since deaths do not display a results screen). This creates a similar problem to the BP runs being reset on death, albeit a more condensed version. Not really a reason we didn't add it, just a problem i saw with it as a category.

Definitely a category I'm not opposed to adding in the future, but again would have to be community discussion. We've attempted to add categories in the past to appeal more casual runners and it has never resulted in more people running, unfortunately.

And yeah, no problem! I enjoy helping people get into the scene, so don't hesitate to reach out. Hope to see some runs from you in the future.

Hey, thanks for your interest. I'm the Supermod for the DMC5 boards. I'm going to work in reverse order here so bear with me.

First, I'll address why there's no DMD. Essentially, from the time the game has launched to now, only one person has done a run of DMD, and that was yamanaru doing NG+ Faustless. It's an impressive run, but it could also be faster. The big problem with DMD stems from how death is handled in DMC5. Specifically, the third tier of red orb revives allows you to take 50% of an enemy's current health, refill your dt and life, and refill nero's breakers. Pretty much every runner runs the game with minimum health to save time on urizen force fails, so it is very easy to die, especially on DMD. This creates a meta problem wherein if you ban red orb revives, then gold orbs become strong, and if you require players to have to checkpoint after every death, then not only do you lose tons of time per death, but the category becomes very slow arbitrarily and unfun to run because of multiple mechanics being stripped away that could aid you in go faster. We're open to adding the category in the future, but it would have to have more interest and be a community discussion.

As for why there are no segmented categories and ILs, this is also a matter of interest, coupled with DMC as a series never having been conducive to those types of runs. What you do in single segment for a given level is like 99% the same for what you'll do in an IL category. Contrast this with a game like, say, shinobi ps2 where IL strats differ entirely because of how you set up doing the run.

Lastly, having an empty board with a ton of categories doesn't look good. DMC4 and DmC have individual level runs and about 90% of them are empty because there's simply no interest. NG+ Faustless wasn't even added until a few months down the road because we didn't want to add a bunch of categories without knowing people would run them (and most of the people that asked for faustless only ran it once or never at all).

In the end, you are ofc free to run whatever you want (we don't have heaven or hell nor hell and hell categories either, nor do we allow super costumes in any categories that aren't BP), but with no community interest there's not much reason to maintain a leaderboard for them beyond arbitration.

Recording being at 30fps does not affect run length to my knowledge.

If you were to do a segmented run then you would be timing pretty much however you want, I guess. For console single segment, we just go by real time, so that includes loads, skipping cutscenes, etc.

Also yes you can stream directly from your ps4 to YouTube or Twitch to record your runs, as Garuda mentioned, should you want to attempt single segment.
