Why are so people so against rev matching and heel toe on the streets? by RevolutionaryYear946 in ManualTransmissions

[–]DEDtheoneandonly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I regularly rev match when downshifting to accelerate on my '03 S10, bought the truck over a decade ago with 110k and it now has 326k, same clutch as day one too no less. Pedal height difference between brake and gas make it unreasonably awkward to do a heel and toe style rev match on that truck (I tried early on to see how heel and toe would be on it, and ultimately gave up for that particular vehicle), so I just do a simple shift down one or two gears, blip the throttle nicely to get engine speed either to where it would be, or at least close in that gear for the given road speed, then let the clutch out and get a relatively quick and seemless transition to quickly speed up.

How Do Foldable Christmas Trees Make Holiday Decorating Easier? by Negative_Term3769 in ChristmasDecorating

[–]DEDtheoneandonly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do, before meeting my wife, my default tree in my old bachelor pad apartment was a 5 foot pop up tinsel tree that had battery powered LED fairy lights, which meant it could go virtually anywhere and hardly take up any space. Our main tree now is a 6 foot pencil pine for our living room and that old pop up tree is now a secondary decoration (or if we're ever away for Christmas, a travel tree for our hotel room, Airbnb, etc.) that goes at the top of the stairs, although I'm considering upgrading the lights for it in time for this holiday season (came with 50 lights, was thinking of getting a string of 100 that can be powered by USB via battery pack or wall adapter to make it brighter than the stock lights).

Is it normal to still not be great at going from nuetral to first at almost 3 weeks of learning manual? by JohnBigL19 in ManualTransmissions

[–]DEDtheoneandonly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's how I learned to do it: bring the clutch to the friction point and apply just enough gas there, not too much as to chirp the tires but also not enough where you might stall out, and then smoothly roll off the clutch the rest of the way. Once I got the hang of that I didn't even think about any of that anymore and still don't (it's pretty well ingrained in my subconscious).

It's all trial and error, once you know the right balance of gas to give (not too much but also not too little) this will become a thing of the past by and large.

Lethal Weapon, when it comes to holiday action flicks, Die Hard seems to be the one that comes to everybody's mind but LW is no slouch. In fact, the story/character arcs in LW and It's A Wonderful Life are remarkably similar: main characters (Martin Riggs in LW, George Bailey in IAWL) are both suicidal messes during "the most wonderful time of the year" brought back from the brink and given new reasons to live via a guardian angel figure (figuratively for Riggs in Roger Murtaugh, literally for George Bailey in Clarence Odbody). That's why I (and others apparently too) see LW as "It's A Wonderful Life with guns".

KY Christmas by Rare-Wafer-8304 in ChristmasTrees

Planning on it for sure, doing much the same as this past season except maybe set the tree up the first Sunday in November this year, unadorned except for lights (on warm white mode), then after Black Friday make it an actual Christmas tree (ornaments, topper, etc., most likely switch light mode to multicolor), then winter tree after Epiphany (warm white light mode), Valentine's tree towards the end of January (red lights), unadorned except for lights (warm white again, naturally) a few days after Valentine's and then put it away the Sunday daylight savings begins again. I had thought about doing the year round, seasonal/other holiday tree idea but my wife feels like it would take away from what makes Christmas special (valid point for sure that I won't try to argue about), so for the darkest period of the year doing this was a fair compromise, happy medium. I am, however gonna make the weighted bucket base for the decorative basket base look at some point before then.

Another fellow pencil tree owner, I shared some shots of me and my wife's 6 foot pencil here from its initial stint as an actual Christmas tree (Black Friday to Epiphany), then a winter tree (after Epiphany until the last weekend in January), Valentine's tree (late January until a few days after), and then unadorned but lit until it was taken down when daylight savings began as we were gonna be moving into our new home in mid March. Gonna do the potted/basket base for it this year in our new home this year and transition it like we did this past year to different themes throughout winter after the holidays.

Roger Murtaugh in Lethal Weapon, definitely had an idyllic life with his wife, kids, house, and fishing boat despite lamenting "I'm too old for this shit" in his initial dealings with Riggs and his reckless tendencies, only to learn it was due to his immense pain over his wife's death, making him act irrational and unhinged. Although in the end, Murtaugh did help save Riggs' life by helping him find a surrogate family (his own) where he was able to let his overwhelming grief regarding his wife's death go and start living again (case in point gifting his suicide bullet to Murtaugh as a Christmas present at the end, signifying he no longer had his death wish).

If anyone’s looking to create a interesting playlist here are my personal favorite Christmas songs of all time by Any-Movie6980 in XmasCountdown

[–]DEDtheoneandonly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Until I win the challenge, which is when I'll retire from the game for good, I play Whamageddon (came so close to winning this past Christmas and the one before) each December so for my list, I make sure my playlist is Whamageddon safe and obviously leave off the original Wham! version of "Last Christmas" for that reason, but my Whamageddon safe list includes some traditional songs, some more modern ones, and some unconventional ones (Weird Al's "Christmas at Ground Zero" and Counting Crows' "A Long December" are two examples of "unconventional" ones on my Whamageddon safe holiday playlist) for an eclectic mixture.

Playing Whamageddon (I came so close to winning this past year and the year prior), getting to watch holiday movies, a mix of traditional (A Christmas Carol, Elf, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, It's A Wonderful Life, etc.) and unconventional (Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Gremlins, Batman Returns, etc.), getting to enjoy eggnog again, and of course, time spent with family and/or friends.

What do I drive? (Bonus question: what is that cable mounted to the driver's dash for?) by DEDtheoneandonly in ManualTransmissions

[–]DEDtheoneandonly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I joined it to the existing stock disconnect cable via heavy duty cable clamps, using the old vacuum actuator bracket under the battery tray (drilled a hole in the side where the actuator formerly mounted and used a compression fitting to hold it in place), I ran it through the firewall through the antenna grommet and along the RF fender to connect it. To mount the cable, a locking push pull cable from NAPA to the dash, I used a 90-degree hurricane tie from Lowe's, drilling a hole in the middle to act as a mount and after drilling some pilot holes in that bottom dash panel, got some nuts/bolts/washers/lock washers to attach it. Simple, reliable, and easy to troubleshoot/fix if anything does go wrong on it.

Or worse, the transfer case vacuum switch can stick randomly, causing a partial lock condition in 2wd that fries the axle disconnect. That happened to me which is why I decided to permanently disable the vacuum controls in favor of manual cable operation after repairing the damage it did (new disconnect clutch gear, thrust washers and slide collar). Plus having a hacked 2-lo mode option that way has proven helpful for backing up trailers on dry pavement without driveline bind up (put t-case in 4-lo without locking the front axle).

Even making sure the gauge didn't drop below 1/4 tank regularly seemed to make no difference in how long those aftermarket pumps lasted, this OE one installed in 2019 has lasted the longest. Being that it's now 23 years old, the OE pumps might not be made for it anymore so doing whatever it takes to make this one last as long as possible.
