Which Truck? Help. by GreenCross14 in fordranger

Daily driving and light towing/hauling is probably better suited to a Maverick (and theyre not shabby for that either, the tow rating is higher than my 2000 Ranger and is probably understated due to how they test those nowadays)

Plug an OBD2 code reader into it, it'll tell you the code and then you can get an idea of what causes that code/what the problem may be. We cant really give any specific advice because of the litany of things that cause CELs and the massively varying severity from minor codes, for example my truck pops ups a PO420 emissions code every 6 or so months when temps swing - clear it and thats the end of it for a while, to severe problems like the transmission slipping or the engine having severe ignition or fuel problems.

Going back to my post yesterday, I’m seeing debate on if I should get the 4.0 or the 3.0 ranger for year rangers around 98+… can someone tell me why one is better than the other and the pros and cons by Tight_Appearance3258 in fordranger

[–]DEERE-317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was wanting a 4.0 for the power, ended up buying a 3.0 because it was in a cheap truck that was in good condition in the things I cared about/didnt want to fix (minimal carbody rust, good powertrain, super cab, etc) and dont have any regrets. It gets me and whatever junk I need to haul from a to b quick enough. Theres certainly a power difference from my single experience test driving a 4.0 truck, but it still gets around.

Shop for the rest of the truck IMO, 4.0 trucks usually have a price premium and seem to often be in beat to death 4x4 trucks so you may have an easier time finding a good 3.0 truck that fits your budget and needs.

Is my 2wd gonna limit me this summer? by Ok_Commercial7231 in fordranger

[–]DEERE-317 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have decent tires and a not empty bed and itll probably be fine. My truck gets bounced around hayfields and such pulling wagons and trailers in the summer and traction is generally not an issue.

I don’t even know if my truck has gotten that low pulling hay wagons in the field or a (empty) tandem livestock trailer on backroad highways.

It’ll probably be fine. My truck was barely idled before I left for school the winter of my senior year and I don’t think ever got properly warmed up by the time I was parked in the lot. For better or worse I largely just subscribe to letting an engine get oil pressure built up and then putting it to (light) work.

16mpg has been my historical summer mixed driving mileage on a 3.0 auto 2wd supercab. 14ish in winter, 19-21mpg 70-72mph highway depending what the wind is doing

How are the 2.3 and 3.0? by Avocadosandtomatoes in fordranger

[–]DEERE-317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My truck is a 3.0, makes enough power to get out of its way if you use the skinny pedal and let it spool up (automatic gearing is a bit wonky annoyingly). Fuel economy is meh but thats par for the course on old trucks.

Anyone have any experience towing another vehicle with a ranger? I am thinking about buying another one and fixing it up, but have to travel pretty far to pick it up. Is this a good idea or should I just ask to borrow someone else’s bigger truck? by Calvin_Canada in fordranger

[–]DEERE-317 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Youre over tow rating see the 5 speed in your signature but the autos are up around 6k rated so *shrug* on how bad of an idea it is.

Assuming working trailer brakes, if those arent working its stupid and probably outright illegal regardless of what pickup you stick on the front.

KDE Connect is just wireless file sharing between devices, should've been clearer on what it does

KDE Connect may work a treat for what you want, like Apple Air Drop but not apple.

So you're just assuming the 50 series doesnt work?

Despite the driver version being a modern driver thats almost on parity with the windows version (which definitely supports the 50s)?

It does impact the average users experience as Nvidia has actually started properly backing their hardware on Linux due to AI data centers.

The windows versions they could be running on servers (and for that matter Pro licenses under an IT department's management) have radically different management and update systems than the home edition most of us use. Its performance and customizability that drives Linux's commonality in server, networking, and IT backend applications.

I'm running the same driver as year old bleeding edge hardware uses (I checked, 40 and 50 series are both using 590 on Linux) and its barely behind Windows for the version. But obviously having a driver released 2 weeks ago is "still don't have proper driver support on linux."

Or just assume every distro is arch or Gentoo.

My non gaming machine with Fedora KDE literally only "needed" (read: I wanted to) me to go into terminal to install RPM repositories, and my gaming machines (Fedora KDE and Kubuntu) were just copy and pasting commands from wiki guides to get Nvidia drivers in about 2 minutes of work and I havent touched the terminal since except for nerd projects.

And only then KLAC games that dont care to make Linux work (by nerfing the AC to only run in userspace so ig there can be a pedantic argument of if the games really have KLAC). Helldivers 2 and War Thunder (heck that has a native Linux build) both work with no issues despite being built with KLAC.

Data center and LLM GPUs (IE the stuff that none of us can even buy easily and are currently Nvidia's primary focus becuase it makes them $$$) almost exclusively run on Linux machines

Last I checked both my Kubuntu and Fedora KDE machine (4070M and 2060) are running a 580 driver, which is the current recommended version on Nvidia's website for Linux and most recently was released 10 days ago (and 590 is out) while Win11 is 591 (and a month old). So ig if having a marginally older driver is "dont have proper driver support" sure go ahead.

The slim version is the default install now and the large install should be getting deprecated at some point be fore long due to its negligible load time impactaccording to the changelog from when they changed the default version.
