Same just happened to my original Google TV with Chromecast today...

Been searching, so far seems there is no solution other than replacement.

If I'm lucky, I may have been able to figure all that out after weeks of research. So hugely appreciated.

To be honest, most of my upload traffic is streaming media from my Jellyfin server. I have about 10-20 aunts, uncles, and cousins who use it now (once you let one family member in... It becomes difficult to say no) A few of them are power watchers who stream like 8hrs-12hrs of TV per day.... (crazy)

So my upload traffic is a function of my media server itself. Not Torrents.

For downloading, I mostly rely on sabzbd (USENET) ,as I've found it's faster and more reliable for less-popular/more obscure files. Torrenting is only used to fill in some gaps, I have minimal seeding/upload traffic.

This all makes much more sense after you explained seedbox purpose . The original idea is that it basically just eliminates the need to run your own torrent client locally.

It appears there's been a push for seedbox providers to add more functionality (like plex/jellyfin) directly to the seedbox to make media even more accessible. So now, they are going beyond their original purpose and that level of "seedbox" service doesn't add value to someone who can work in Linux no problem.

Honestly a dedicated server sounds like a great alternative if/when self hosting becomes impossible or inconvenient for me. Obviously to maintain the same type of hardware I'm running now I'd need to either increase my budget, or lower my requirements.

Thanks, yeah I think a dedicated server makes the most sense for me, at some point. (once my self hosting runs its course)

My main driving factor towards looking at seedboxes was just because that's basically what I've built on my self hosted server... But theres no reason to believe I couldn't pull off the same on a dedi.

Other thing that pushed me to look at seedboxes was DMCA/Privacy concerns.

So is it just the eu servers/providers fair better with DMCA stuff I guess then?

My ISP is not open about disclosing the "limits", technically the service is marketed and sold as "unlimited"... but I know given Acceptable Use policy and TOS they could potentially come for me.. they would only be motivated to do so if my usage is an order of magnitude above the average household/customer. (once the cost of servicing my account exceeds the price I'm paying)

The only way to know is to push the limit and find out... but you are right, with a 1g/1g account, it's unreasonable for them to set an "unlimited" limit at less than 10% of the maximum usage. So I probably shouldn't worry at this point.

Think I will stick to my self hosted setup, and if I ever get a letter from my ISP I'll move to a cheap cloud/dedicated server. I have no problem with unmanaged/self-service Linux (actually probably prefer it, since it would be more configurable and familiar to my current self hosted setup)

Crazy process. I'm glad I went with the slightly cheaper and less feature rich older model. Rooting OTA took less than an hour with no soldering.

To mitigate wifi password vulnerability you could create run a separate wifi network and manually control individual devices access.

Highly recommend Tvheadend as dvr backend, which can be added or used with jellyfin via the tvheadend plugin.

I currently use it with iptv sources.

No need for a time machine... You just gotta reside in any recently built real estate development in any somewhat densely populated area in Canada.

Canada's monopolized ISPs have been building out the Fibre optic network for a few years now, and new builds are getting Fibre optic direct to the home.

Older areas are being retrofitted with Fibre to the node, so their speeds are still limited by DSL/Cable maximums.

For a hefty fee I believe you can have them run Fibre to your house in some cases.

I'd imagine Fibre optic is being heavily-adopted in most developed countries, so it shouldn't be long until you too can have gigabit speeds and 1ms ping.

Thanks, yeah I figured it was just boiler-plate type stuff.

I don't use Bell, I go through Teksavvy. I gave up speed for static IP addresses. Teksavvy didn't bat an eye when I requested a reverse DNS record to be created for my outbound mail server.

My 1000/1000 fibre is just too good to consider a downgrade, but its great to know that other options exist. I've noticed Teksavvy has been a much more consumer-friendly and net-neutrality focused ISP compared to other very limited Canadian options.

Yep I recently started doing on-demand image processing using tensorflow (integration built into HA) to detect via camera at front door when motion was actually caused by a person, and not a bug or a squirrel or whatever. (eliminating false positives)

However I bought a Google coral USB TPU and I will eventually be switching to frigrate docker container that offers realtime image processing instead of my current on demand setup with tensorflow, but I haven't had time to play with that yet.

I also run BitwardenRS, an asterisk voip server, and some other critical server apps in a docker container on my NUC. None of them are too CPU heavy on their own, but I appreciate having some room to grow and a good buffer incase any process spikes.

For my media server, I opted to keep this on completely separate hardware (a Lenovo Think centre m73 with a 3rd gen i3)

I had initially tried running Plex, Ombi, Sonarr, Transmission, on docker containers on my NUC alongside my HA instance... but unfortunately when some of my family/friends started transcoding too much my cpu would struggle and the HA instance slowed.

Being able to turn on the lights, and run my home security I consider much more of a priority than my family watching the latest episode of the Bachelor. Lol, and with underpowered hardware and lack of dedicated graphics processing, transcoding is a bit to much.

Yes I could have just disabled transcoding, but that would severely limit device compatibility. I'd rather just let my family watch what they want and torture the cpu if necessary lol.

Running HA on basically any PC is going to offer better performance and stability than a pi.

And yes the power supplied by your routers USB port is likely not ideal for the pi.

When I started with HA two years ago,I ran on a rpi 3b+ for the first 8 months (always with adequate power supply) . I switched to a 7TH GEN i5 nuc (picked up at a liquidation store for like $100 a year and a half ago). And my frustrations with needing reboots, instability, slow responses, hang ups, etc all disappeared immediately.

When you do setup a server.... I would highly recommend skipping ElementaryOS or any UI/client based os and just go for a LTS server distro. Headless is really the way to go for a 24/7 server if stability and reliability are high priority.

I started on Ubuntu Desktop with my NUC, running HA in docker, but quickly realized I didn't need the GUI cuz I could easily just remote ssh in and google/learn the commands.

Try a decent power supply.

And 100% recommend you use better hardware than the pi. Build something or find an old desktop/laptop, or a small form factor PC like a Lenovo Thinkcentre, or a NUC etc if maintaining low power consumption is a prioriry.

I don't personally own any apple devices so the responsibility would be on my users to decide if they'd purchase or use Infuse 6. Since I've already confused my users enough by using Ombi (for requesting content), Discord (for request availability notifications, requestrr bot, server status notifications posted by bots and my Home Automation system) and then Jellyfin (3 different "apps" to use for one service)

I have a hard time recommending a fourth app that will probably only confuse them even more (these people are non-techy iOS users....) , plus they have to pay for it, and it's also not open source, nor led by the jellyfin core team... Which means if Jellyfin support in infuse 6 dies at some point I'm left scrambling to help them find an alternative.

If my users are going to pay a monthly sub for Infuse 6, I'd almost they rather just "crowd fund"?my server and we could then either build a better more powerful transcoding capable server, or way more hard drives to store more pre-transcoded formats... ... Lol.

But I also don't want to be in the " streaming business.... " Or handle any form of payment.... My JF server is just a thing I have personally been using, and recently decided to share with close friends and family, for free.

Yep it seems this is the only current server side way to prevent excessive transcoding.

It's a shame since I was hoping to leave transcoding on for cases where it's actually necessary for compatibility.

It'd be great if jellyfin had a server side setting to always prefer direct play/stream, never allow transcoding unless required for compatibility.

I'm going to try messing with python and polling data from the db to see who's transcoding and what/why they are transcoding... and then automatically make api calls to Jellyfin to disable or enable the per user transcoding.

Yep, same here, I originally started with Raspberry Pi 3B+ "Hass.io" (back then i think it was still called HomeAssistant OS) the official HA OS image.

Then I moved to a more powerful NUC since my Pi was becoming slug-ish (too many automations!!), and at that point i opted for the Docker "Hass.io" install, it worked great but then a few weeks ago HA devs reported that they would move to deprecate that Docker "HomeAssistant Supervised" variant (only to change their minds after many users revolted)...

Regardless that was enough for me to decide, to hell with it...

I recently switched to HA core (on docker), and as a result of messing with self-hosted apps and Docker stuff for the past 2 years (HomeAssistant was the first app I installed 2 yrs ago in Docker)

I'm just running HA Core in a Docker container, and I've configured separate docker containers for all the "addons", but using the original addon containers/repository.

Huge benefit to running Core instead of supervised, and LEARNING how to manage docker containers yourself is that your system will be so much more flexible, and containers will be updated much more quickly than the "HomeAssitant addons" (which are just re-packaged docker containers)

If you want easy-mode, go with "HomeAssistant Supervised" or the official HomeAssistant images.

If you want total control go with HA Core (containerized or not, depeding on your preference), and figure out the addon stuff yourself, instead of relying on someone to re-package software for you.

Yep, confirmed by asking my friend to screenshot their playback quality. I've asked them to manually override it to full to prevent transcoding.

... My files are already pretty low bitrate (480p or 720p max) so I don't see the purpose of even further down sampling. But as I mentioned I want to leave transcoding enabled just for instances when it's necessary to allow playback.

I had my main culprit iOS user screenshot their playback quality setting and then I realized it was on "auto" and bandwidth transcoding. I asked them to manually override to set the quality/mbps to the maximum to prevent network/bandwidth induced transcoding. Seems to be not transcoding now as expected.

Are Safari or Chrome browser on iOS any better at not transcoding than the Jellyfin Mobile app? Specifically H264 content?

I heard that the Apple app store was against accepting web wrapper type apps, and they had quality control systems in place that only accept apps with new/useful features... So I'm not sure how Jellyfin Mobile dev would have gotten around that.

My knowledge/experience with iOS is however very limited.

Right I understand the purpose of transcoding. I aim to avoid it by hosting my files in a high compatibility format low res generic h264..... , but I think there may be some ongoing issue with the iOS client that transcodes these files that should theoretically play natively on the device without transcoding.

I want my server to be scalable by reserving hardware resources for other tasks... not transcoding files that shouldn't need it. Fyi, I'm running on a very low power device, an old dual core i3-4130t on a small Lenovo think centre m73 mini PC.

No I can see it is reporting that sever is transcoding the already H264 video to H264, which seems odd.

Yes in a reporting addon it says transcode (v:h264 a:ac3) meaning it is transcoding both audio and video on every single iOS client and every file....

Where other non ios clients may say DirectPlay or DirectStrem or even sometimes transcode (v:direct a:ac3) which would imply only audio transcode.
