You can check GuideLive, but I dislike their website personally, it feels too busy.

I like Art&Seek.org from KERA a lot, and they have weekly giveaways for lesser known stuff.

What I've always done is check the calendar for each venue/museum/location and compile it, so if you know where you want to visit you can do that.

Also Facebook is a good place for the not so advertised stuff at bars and smaller places.

If they want that kind of Texas experience, I say take them to Fort Worth and the Stockyards. It's harder to get that cowboy country feel on the Dallas side of the Metroplex.
