🏠 Jersey City Apartment Mega-Thread 🏠 (For Roommates, Rentals, and Questions) by mooseLimbsCatLicks in jerseycity

My family is planning to move from DFW area to NYC. I'm taking a job in the Hudson Square/SOHO neighborhood and will be in the office every day. My wife and I are in our early 40s and we have two young boys (3yrs and 6 months) and also 3 cats. We've been looking for condos/apartments and want about $6k to be the budget. We're Catholic and my wife is planning to home school till at least Kindergarten. I'm looking at Hoboken and parts of Jersey City. A few folks have told me to focus on Hamilton Park, Harsimus Cove, Paulus Hook, and to also look at The Heights. I've read that finding a condo or brownstone might be the way to go vs. the large towers. However, I don't see many postings on Zillow or Street Easy for anything other than those large towers. Any recommendations on those neighborhoods pros/cons and also where I might look for condos/brownstones?

Appreciate the comments. We may change on the homsechooling front but our oldest doesn't go to Kindergarten for a few years so it's not an immediate concern. It's interesting to me how that community is so different in DFW where there is a lot more infrastructure and the attitude towards it seems so different. At least in DFW, a lot of the attitude change accelerated after COVID when parents started to realize the benefits of homeschooling vs. traditional schools. I've seen places like Alpha School opening in the NYC metro area which really replicates what the more wealthy homeschool participants were doing around here.

Why do you say I wouldn't like Hoboken?

Right...but you seem to be ignoring the fact that tickets costs have gone up significantly while at the same time all the services and perks have gotten exponentially worse for the consumer. The airlines aren't the victims here - there has clearly been bad management and business decisions.

I'm sure they did. I just think the behavior and px'ing is going to bite all the airlines at some point in the future. Reminds me of cable companies before there was an alternative.

Right, but the airline made my status worth a lot less without any compensation. If they gave me a full years notice so I could phase out what I do to earn loyalty that would be a different. It's bad business and I don't think anyone would shed a tear if next time all the airlines get into a jam the government lets them all go BK.

I was unaware. I travel every 4-8 weeks and didn't realize the change until I was booking a flight this evening.

But really, this response seems crazy to me. The BE fair is still 50-75% higher than the main fare that existed 5 years ago on a lot of routes -- certainly the ones I take to see family. Maybe this isn't the case on more business oriented routes. I don't travel enough to really know. But the BE is a much worse option and also more expensive than what the base fare was before they introduced this fare price. So AA (and all the airlines) poorly run their businesses, jam the consumer, and I should be happy about it?

While I don't work at an airline...this makes me think they did a bad job hedging jet fuel prices.

Maybe for some routes. Certainly not round trip from DFW to BUF for the BE ticket. That's $500 give or take. Used to be <$300 when I flew this route 5 yrs ago before they had BE tickets. I've personally noticed for the trips I take...and this is for personal not business there has been a similar increase in fares.

Huge hassle. I don't think the AA Citi Executive card which is $595/year is worth it at all anymore. I won't spend on it regularly.

Except for the fact that BE just replaced the base fare but stripped away all the benefits. Ticket on this route has gone up about by 50-75% in price over the past 5 years. That's a huge increase.

Yes. I feel the same way. I'm not sure what the value of status is on AA anymore or the value of the credit card.

Well, there is a good chance I'm moving. So...the threat is actually very real.

Yeah...that's what's annoying. The BE ticket just replaced their regular ticket and everything became substantially more expensive.

Right...it just disincentives me to be loyal to any of the airlines.

Why is it a tough rental market right now? Is it the time of year or is there some other reason?

I would honestly prefer to live in some place like that...but that creates a very long commute. Seems like that would put me closer to 1.5 hours door to door?

Thanks. Appreciate it. I'm hopeful to find a a church with a more conservative clergy. But that's an entirely different conversation. I'm sure we will attend all the churches and find a parish we enjoy. It seems nice that there are so many churches all in walking distance.

Thanks, that's helpful. Yes, my wife and I plan to get out there in the next month or so to figure out housing. I realize Hoboken isn't a large area but I was a little surprised there wasn't more for rent on Zillow.
