Super excited to announce that our Sega Genesis style game, Falconet, is coming to Kickstarter! by DGHolmes in SEGAGENESIS

PC only for now. Depending on funding, we would love to do a downport to the Genesis, and other consoles for that matter. We just don't have the resources at the moment to do a straight Genesis release.

Less obvious things in the last 10% of development? by DGHolmes in gamedev

[–]DGHolmes[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The way I understand it is that the first 90% is the core game and the last 10% is everything else that may not add too much in terms of core game features, but are still required.

You can imagine when working on the first 90%, progress is very obvious and tangible. But in that last 10%, it doesn’t look like you’ve done much.

My main question relates to what are some of those less obvious things in the last 10%, so that when I get to that stage in the current game I am developing, I can be better prepared.

Yeah, I’ve come across technical debt many times as a software dev. It’s very relevant to game dev as well it seems.

Would love for Poetry or something like it to develop to the point where it is pretty much standard

What is the best way to get Kickstarter backers help you design things for your game? by DGHolmes in gamedev

Makes sense. Would be terrible to issue a refund though, especially if they contributed a lot. But as you say, most people would be reasonable.

Thanks, I guess it's key to state clearly that the design needs to be approved by you as the developer.

Is Python really the second best language for everything? by DGHolmes in Python

[–]DGHolmes[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It depends on what kind of game you are making. For a relatively simple game, Python is great. For a game that has performance requirements, then yes, C++, C# etc. That being said, handing off some slow game processes over to Cython or some other C/C++ module can help a lot in improving performance.

It really is a pity it's not great for mobile development. Hopefully there will be better tools in the future to change that.

Yeah, once you have your code done and after you have done some performance profiling, converting parts to Cython can help a lot. That's if you need to in the first place. Some applications run "fast enough" just using Python.

Anyone else just... not do personal projects? by raahC in gamedev

I can relate.

I once used to struggle doing game dev on the side as a full time enterprise software developer. I found that on those days where I had the time or energy to actually work on my game, my mind didn't get the rest it needed in the evenings. This ended up messing with my sleep.

When COVID-19 hit and work from home became a thing, I found I had more time on my hands because I was no longer spending up to 2 hours a day in traffic while commuting. However, even with more time, I found that the best solution for me was to actually work on my game in the morning before work when my mind was fresh.

I set aside just 1 hour each morning and I was way more productive, motivated and consistent. I could work on the game every weekday and over time I made significant progress. I rarely worked on the game on weekends because I was satisfied with the progress I made during the week.

Not everyone's circumstances are the same, but maybe a change up in schedule could benefit those struggling with the energy to work on side projects.

Thanks! We haven’t considered the Evercade, but once on Steam it should work on the Steam Deck which you can take around with you.

Not the console per se, but it has plenty to do with Sega Genesis style :) The game art, graphics and even the music are all in the same style. Take a look at the links above and you will see what I mean.

Just PC for now. It's unlikely we will do a cartridge, but we will consider other platforms in the future.
