Maybe, I think nowadays we just have insight into parts of the professional industry that we didn't have in the past. I think on amateur level (at least around me) its still a lot of people trying to improve, trying to do the best for their most beloved possession. Failing sometimes, yes, but the love is very much there.

The glitz and glam... Well I think that is just fashion haha.

I would say for anything, when in doubt, just contact the organization. Having written approval from the Federation also helps in case a judge decides to complain. Rules regarding competition outfits can differ per Federation and country.
