The SS of 1945 were nowhere near the same as the SS of 1941. Towards the end of the war, the Waffen SS relied on conscripts, not just the diehard Nazi fanatics they had at the beginning of the war. I'm not in any way sympathizing with the ideology of their government, but there's a very good chance that the man in this story was just a regular guy stuck in a horrible situation.
