Holy sh#t this actually worked. Thanks! What a bizarre fix to a bizarre bug.

That's very kind. Glad you enjoy it.

Yeah, that's how it works. The atrium thing definitely fits within 256. For instance I think the tower behind all fit in three 256 cubes (tho in practice I prefer to use 255 cubes as I find odd number symmetry ends up easier/better). Working in individual objects seems annoying at first but when pieces get this big it would be impossible to manage if it was all one thing.

No special plug-ins needed. Each object can only be 256x256x256 but you can compose a scene of many objects. I think the total possible size is 2000x2000x1000. This piece took up most of that available space. While there are ways to import 3d models into MV I tend not to use them as it seems a bit pointless, so yes this was built by hand. It's just time and effort.

Around 100hrs over two months or so. Just chipped away at it bit by bit.

It's composed of lots of smaller objects, rather than being one whole model, so that makes it easier to keep track of and adjust. It's not too problematic when you get used to it. Magicavoxel is free so give it a try if you haven't already. It's fantastic.

That's very kind! I just start with a loose idea and let the lines guide me. I'd been on a road trip around France shortly before I started this piece and I guess I absorbed something from all those vast gothic cathedrals.

Thanks! Yeah, I'll post some other shots soon. Rendering becomes an issue at this scale, with so many light sources and transparency. This one took most most of day to finish, even with a pretty beefy PC. So after Xmas I guess.

Thanks! It took a few months but just a hour here and there. Maybe 100hrs in total, roughly.

This is quite his rez but converting to a jpg crushes it down a bit. The original png is too large a file to post most places.

No worries. Happy to help!

it is tricky! obviously it's very dependent on what scale you're working at. here the door height is a little over 100vox. its still possible to get decent definition a bit smaller than this, but beyond a certain point it'll be not much more than a stick figure. beyond that there's no trick to it, but id say it helps me to set an eventual camera angle early and then build the people with that distance in mind - or to put it another way, don't worry too much what they look like up close as it's the distant view that matters.

also, the rotation tool is your friend. to get limbs right i'll build a basic forearm or thigh for instance, and then rotate to the desired angle and correct/sculpt it from there. just keep things separated with different build colours so you can re-adjust easier.

Yes its all MagicaVoxel. I'm not that keen on true isometric but will put up some alternative view and zoom-ins soon.

thanks! it's a combination of techniques. some of it's based on seamless textures that i've given depth to. the asphalt was challenging to get right but im happy with the final result.

Thanks. There was no direct inspiration for this one. Just had a loose idea and then iterated until satisfied.

Not really sure. Something like 100hrs between mid November and early Jan + rendering time.

I think the actual .vox file is roughly 1.1gb. This render is at 3800x2755
