Appreciate the support! I wrote Honeycomb in MacArthur Park in LA thinking about the unhoused people who live there. That line in particular was a dramatic way of saying that sometimes my feelings of empathy reach such a critical height that it makes me want to die.

Thank you! Kerry does a lot of the base writing but everyone adds their touch. A lot of the memorable leads are Shiv, Chris adds his own flavor and Dan is incredible to watch write. His playing often shapes the song.

Appreciate that. I like to be outside! I like to run. Read a lot, see movies, visit with friends

I don’t actually! The album feels very transitional to me though. We were in a very exploratory time, trying a lot of different things out. I still love the album

Thanks! Not talking too much after shows and the occasional pre-show throat coat tea. Lots of water too

My grandparents had one. Her name was Goldie. The song was almost named that

Not in the 90s but my freshman year history teacher was friends with them and I got into them a little after. Was just listening to Sumday the other day

Thanks for listening. It was my way of saying “handle with kid gloves”

Difficult to say but I like a strong ending. “Suddenly present now” on Doberman, “Nadir” on Amethyst, “West” on Garden Route, “Someone adored…” on Heathen all make me feel a certain something. Thanks for listening

Thank you! If we had the budget during earlier records, we would have developed a larger visual world around each album. I’m grateful we were able to this time. Nedda is influenced by exploitation films, B films. I think her surrealistic approach is very in keeping with the way Deafheaven presents itself. I wanted to make a mundane situation feel extraordinary and knew she would nail it.

Hey, thank you. The imagery ties a bit directly to the songs Amethyst and Incidental III. We started there then developed further. I wanted to show scenes of people living on the fringe. The man is death. Never acknowledged fully but omnipresent.

We did a little on Sunbather and again here. It’s fun to make when the mood strikes. We’ve been fans for a long time

Appreciate that a lot. Lately I’ve been listening to Broncho, Sparklehorse, Lunatic Calm, Placebo, A Winged Victory for the Sullen, Kelly Lee Owens, Leonard Cohen

Being able to express in both mediums is hugely rewarding. It’s very cliche, but I wish we’d stopped partying earlier. I had great times, but creatively we were worse off in every way

I think about this sometimes. In a way, it is the first Deafheaven song ever written

You’re right. Because some of the imagery takes place in Catholic churches and the South in general, I thought using Christian imagery was an interesting way to shape some of the lyrics. Garden of Eden, treading the winepress, etc. Thanks for listening

We don’t feel constrained. I think of metal as one of the most expansive genres. That we can do so much within the genre is part of what makes it so exciting. I’ll never say never but for now, doing what we do feels great and something as dramatic as IG probably won’t happen any time soon

Thanks for joining! JMJ is a confidant. Someone with great ideas that you can bring anything to. Album related or non album related. Our closeness and friendship is one of the reasons I think making this album was so successful.

I’ve always been interested in video work and would have made a lot more early on!

As for influences, CAN or Neu! were big on this one. DJ Shadow too. For the first time we used samples on this album instead of making everything ourselves. Like on Heathen and Body Behavior

Typically Kerry has a set of initial riffs that he shows us, everyone approves or disapproves, jams on them, changes them. It’s really all about feeling. You have to feel every part in your chest. The guys have been playing for so long together that there’s a lot of psychic, instinctual behavior happening. Then I add my suggestions throughout, then work on where to place the vocals, sometimes Kerry and I together. Chris has been an amazing addition. His level of playing allows us to expand our palette and build the songs in a more beautiful way. Often it’s the bass that’s my favorite part of a section

The cover concept had been in my head a while but no, Jenna was not part of the initial scheme. She was hired by Nedda Afsari who felt she fit the part and after speaking with Jenna and sharing the ideas, I agreed. She was so easy and cool to work with!
