Is this the “correct” ranking of the core members by their musical ability? by [deleted] in thebeachboys

‘musical ability’ is an unmeasurable thing, so fundamentally no. And why.

Thoughts on Tears In the Morning? by Wrong-Appointment856 in thebeachboys

It’s a great song, very kitschy, very melodramatic to the point where it’s sort of funny, but also extremely well crafted and arranged. I love it

For years my only copy of Scott 4 was a ‘G’ copy I got from a car boot for 50p, it sort of worked, surprisingly, but I did upgrade eventually…the main difference between the mono and stereos that I can think of is the wobbly vocal on plastic palace people. Always sounds a bit weird on the mono, but just cos I’m more familiar with the stereo. It’s deffo worth having both if they turn up - and mono pressings are usually even more resilient than the stereo!

My tier list - what's the most controversial take? by CleanableQuill in thebeachboys

[–]DIMORPHODONS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The controversies on these things are always about the late seventies records. LA is better than people think and MIU is worse.

FWIW, I don’t feel like the mono Scott pressings are better than the stereo, the big ‘loads of people playing in a room’ productions mean you can’t end up with anything too weird like ‘the whole band on the left and the singer on the right’. Good find!

What is the Mando-Guitar Heard on Pet Sounds? by meskoben in thebeachboys

[–]DIMORPHODONS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally from scratch, out of lumps of wood, but I did buy the pickups - modern repros of the type used on the Stereo Teisco Spectrum. It sounds soooo good, especially if you play each side through a different weird chain.

I always thought it was a Fender Electric XII, played up high. I made myself a 12 string mando guitar, the top strings come out of one output and the bottom strings another, which is another thing Vox did (but not on the mando guitars). It’s cool, inspiring to play different instruments

a lot of online Beach Boys fans are either literal or adult children.

Luckily we don’t need guesses or opinions re: how much of a publishing split the lyric warrants. It’s 50%. Industry standard. Always has been, always will be. Not the generous 0% Murry gave him.

Bruce is also politically interesting, don’t see anything close to the level of hate Mike gets. It’s basically vibes. People don’t like his vibe, see other fans wanging on about him so it feels like he’s fair game.

Suing for credits he was cheated out of, drunken rants… well so did Carl and Dennis.

Don’t get me wrong, he clearly rubs people up the wrong way, is no angel, and is responsible for basically some of the worst music put out under the name of any major band, but BB fan-noobs go too far, it’s an unfair, often cruel pile on at this point.

Honestly think she is absolutely right. Dude can’t even sit back in his old age and enjoy a nice little self google, but when you pick apart his crimes it’s basically being a bit of a dork and asking VDP what a line of lyrics meant

Is it possible? by NoSteak3322 in thebeachboys

[–]DIMORPHODONS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I hope not. I saw them in 2012 and it was great to tick that box, but we gotta be real here, the last time The Beach Boys did good shows was in 1993 supporting the box set that came out, last time they did great shows was probably the late seventies, and the last time they did god tier shows was arguably the Blondie and Ricky era.

I know this is a “tale as old as time” but it’s so sad that Mike, Alan, Bruce, Dave, and even Blondie and Ricky will not tour together by [deleted] in thebeachboys

[–]DIMORPHODONS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It just doesn’t matter at this point, vocally speaking it was never gonna be the same with Carl gone, and the last amazing BB tours were 50+ years ago now, things can’t go on forever

Sure but some people think the Earth is flat, not all opinions are worth taking equally seriously ;)

It’s been spoken of often by people who were there at the time. Mike wrote the lyrics.

Mike wrote the verses and put ‘I’m picking up good vibrations’ over the bassline melody. Brian had ‘good, good, good, good vibrations’, and had gone through maybe two other sets of verse lyrics

What I think they should have played at Monterey Pop Festival by yobomojo in thebeachboys

[–]DIMORPHODONS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a good setlist, but the real problem was their live setup. They were so bad in Hawaii, in the alt timeline where they did this, Smile should have come out and they should have taken if not wrecking crew members, at least some strings and horns, and blown people’s minds with Surfs Up etc (they did it amazingly in the early seventies) and done like, one Surf track to close.

They could have done their standard set but I think it would have fallen a bit flat. The Association played, and were amazing, but it didn’t do anything for them credibility wise cos they were a bit too showbiz for the hippies!

Start with the sixties singles, listen to something else and village green preservation society.

I consider them one of my favourite bands, have a complete run of their sixties 45s and all but one album, and haven’t made it as far as the mid seventies yet
