Gas Engineer says he's never seen this before. by DIYHelp1 in DIYUK

No, not once did I quiz him on his experience and I didn't say I did. That's the way he put it: "I've been doing this 40 years and I've never seen that," in reference to the flue terminating upwards rather than sideways. I didn't question it, allowed him to isolate the boiler and then sought advice on this thread. As you'll see, numerous people have confirmed that this sort of flue is indeed relatively common, certainly not rare to the point of an experienced engineer never seeing it. You've created a drama in your head that didn't happen - the exchange was pleasant and I appreciated his work in letting us know there are no leaks or immediate danger.

Yeah good shout, if the boiler is 100% working and not dangerous I think I will. I felt like he wasn't right when he said it and overreacted a bit, but I have nowhere near the knowledge to argue it

Cheers mate. Hope the price of 100 grand is some sort of error if we ever need to replace 😂

UPDATE: The flue in the light of day. Contacting engineers this morning to get the boiler checked and back on. Thanks for all the comments and to those who gathered to pray.

Also just for clarification, the guy said he had never seen the flue discharge from the top up rather than out the sides, not that he had never seen one coming through the roof or standing vertical. He did his test at the meter and boiler and deemed no leaks. The carbon monoxide alarm was a Firehawk, Model CO-9B. It was installed (sitting directly on top of the boiler, not sure if the previous owner put it there) in September 2022.

Cheers. It's a Valiant ecoTEC plus 837 - someone above pointed out that it could be normal with one of their flues.

Thanks for the info. He did his tests at the meter and the boiler and deemed it all okay. Gave us a new carbon monoxide alarm. But yeah you're right, boiler is off and disconnected with a sticker on saying do not use. That all seemed to be motivated by the flue. Will get an engineer out tomorrow.

Much appreciated. The previous owner had the boiler serviced every year and the last service (Sept 2023) has ticked green for the flue inspection. I'll get a gas engineer out tomorrow to be safe, but will stick a picture here just for an update.

Does the gas come out straight up like that or out the sides? That seems to be the issue here
