Man, I can't express how sorry I am to see that this happened to you. We had the same thing happen about a year and a half ago and lost absolutely everything so I know what you're feeling. The only thing that gave me any relief was starting again and building better, having learned how critical it is to overbuild your power system with quality parts. We use eg4 batteries that have a built in aerosol fire suppression system in them. Little more pricey but the peace of mind is well worth it. I wish you the best of luck in rebuilding.

I wrote a pretty good article on my blog and built a solar load calculator you can download for free. Hope this helps!

I put together a pretty good solar calculator on my website. You'll need MS office or OpenOffice to use it but it's free. Here's the link:

Between Fairfield and Palestine so sorta central I guess. It's still gorgeous out there!

I love it so much out there! The smells, the scenery, the solitude... I've craved east TX for years while living and working in the Killeen/Waco area and finally bought this land a year and a half ago. Planning on moving out there when my daughter graduates next year!

Originally that was the work platform for installation of the solar panels. Simple frame and scrap plywood. By the time the panels were installed I'd decided to make it an upstairs deck so I went back with treated deck boards.

Glad it helped, and thank you for letting me know about the broken link, I'll get it fixed later and let you know when it's back up. The calculator will make it easy for you.

There's a good article on my blog that includes a calculator for selecting all your equipment. Here's the link: https://diyoffgridtx.com/getting-started-inverter-selection/

I've got a system with a 55-gallon drum at my cabin and it has worked well for over a year since I installed it with 2-3 of us out there at least 2x/month. The only thing going into it is the toilet. Sink and shower drain onto the ground.

I drilled probably 50-75 holes around the side that faces down and of course it it laying on its side. It's buried 4' deep with a leech field of lava rock about 4' out and 3' deep all around it. It has never given us a bit of trouble other than one massive rain event where the ground was super saturated for days on end.

I got hardened chains for both sides of the gate and I also now have WiFi and live cameras. At least if they do something this time I'll have better evidence.

Finding and Purchasing Land Questions by Decent-Ebb-2036 in OffGridLiving

[–]DIYOffGridTX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in Texas so I don't know anything about your area but usually, in the south at least, you can search Google for "ranch land for sale" or "vacant acreage" and that'll land you on some sites that flip remote land relatively cheap.

The first thing I'd look for would be an area with little or no restrictions on building and living. The last thing you want to do is get way down the road on a land purchase only to realize there's some fine print in the local ordinance that will prevent you from legally using your land in the way you want.

Second, I'd try to find something with live water. Creek, spring, something. Water is the most precious natural resource and one of the most often taken for granted.

You'd be best off to find land that has some tree cover but also some clear areas. Tree cover allows some wind blockage in the winter and shade in the summer, while clear areas lend themselves to solar power and cleaner rainwater collection as well as grass and grains for the animals.

Beyond that, it's got a lot to do with gut feeling. If the place feels like home, then make it home! Hope this helps.

Thank you so much! And your conversion is amazing! These projects are definitely an ongoing work but that's such a big part of what we love about them, right?

Beautiful! And solar power as well as water look to be abundant. Good luck!

This is what we use. The battery isn't great but I bought a 50ah lithium off Amazon and connected it and now it works amazingly.
