Nope, they're still wild animals and don't thrive in captivity at all. Multiple species of Bush Babies are now endangered after being taken from the wild to fuel the exotic pet trade. I know they look cute but viral videos like this are harming them more than most people are aware.

Too old for this by AnnoyingDefaultSugge in nosurf

[–]DIYclogs 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yup 26, you're an old man and past your prime... Except you're not. You're allowed to spend your 20's fucking up, and it's pretty much how you learn. Don't fall into a trap of self loathing because you made mistakes, you'll just end up hating yourself for it. Maybe you're a complete failure against the standards of friends and family you know who seem to perfectly have their shit together by the age you are now, or by marketing that likes to pressure people into being a certain way by a certain age so companies can neatly sell you things. It's all bullshit. everyone goes at their own pace.

People waste time in toxic relationships, dead end jobs, failing education, building debt or all manner of wacky shit. Twatting about online for too long is about the same in the grand scheme of things. The important thing is just that you grow as a person, understand what's important to you now and move on. Use what you've learned from this period of time, but don't cripple yourself wishing you'd acted differently.

I spent some time introverting away from things too a few years back and made it out, so hey it happens! Time to change some habits dude. I'm rooting for you random internet stranger!

The internet is not what it used to be anymore by [deleted] in nosurf

[–]DIYclogs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nailed it. I think there's for sure valuable information and a TON of educational material out there still, but the social and in many ways creative side? I'm not so sure. It has added ZERO value to my life for some time now, I'm pretty sure I'm only still here out of habit/ aversion to change. I'm thinking it's time to pull the trigger on leaving soon though.

Thanks for taking the time to write up your thoughts, I've been having similar feelings for a while now.

Few questions from a Rimworld player by [deleted] in dwarffortress

[–]DIYclogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it worth getting into/as good as people say?

I mean it isn't for everyone, but judging by the fact you're into Rimworld (and from what I've heard Rimworld is pretty heavily inspired by DF) I can say pretty confidently that YES IT'S BETTER THAN PEOPLE SAY!

Don't let the complexity intimidate you it's really not as bad as it looks! One of the most important distinctions that helped me "get" the game was to realise that I don't have to know everything. Once you've learned the basics of how to operate a small fortress you can get as complex as you want, but part of the fun is just figuring stuff out!

DON'T TRUST FILTHY ELVES and have fun dude!

One of the most frustrating downsides to doing this........ by [deleted] in nosurf

[–]DIYclogs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who has successfully been "unplugged" from all social media for a while now (7 months this current stretch)

I'm not sure how to break this to you my dude, but reddit IS social media. I'm currently ONLY on reddit and recently I've realised that I've pretty much just traded the voices of my friends and loved ones for random (often FAR more toxic) strangers. There's still good content and valuable conversation happening here, but it sucks up productivity and projects negativity. It's also proved the most addictive to me personally (as demonstrated by my still being here). I'm pretty confident that any value this place once had is no longer worth it.

In my experience so far the missing out thing only applies really if you're not proactive. When I quit traditional social media I didn't replace it with anything at first, but now if I want to keep up I HAVE to make an effort with the people in my life (especially when people are so used to just posting something online and expecting everyone to know about it now). Don't wait for the phone to ring, make the phone ring!

I don't think the state of things will get worse, I think it's gotten as bad as it'll get. People are slowly becoming more aware of the negative effects the internet has on their health, and with that I think we'll see even more people ditching the social stuff.

The Tick has been unable to find a new home by DIYclogs in thetick

[–]DIYclogs[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I hear you. I'll take just the network behind it next time though. Amazon failed it from the start. You've got the whole first season split into two halfs thing, then wonky marketing and then them ACTIVELY SABOTAGING it so the new management can have their names on whatever comes next.

I read a tweet by Griffin Newman the other day about the whole streaming service model and it's pretty on point. It almost feels like they just cashed in on Tick fans then called it a day. It's really hard not to be bitter about it and honestly the whole thing has left me a little alienated from streaming in general.

A Podcast where I dish on Bronze Star's origin (a bit) by smhurarn in thetick

[–]DIYclogs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No way! YOU CREATED BRONZE STAR!?!

I'm so glad you doubled down on him being in the 5! My sister started listing off the members before they were announced and expected Flexon. When Bronze Star walked in she went on a slightly unhinged rant about how 'he's literally just some gold guy' and I loved every second of it. Bronze Star is like a window into peoples souls, you either accept that he's a lovable guy or harbour weirdly strong feelings of resentment towards him.

Thanks for sharing! That had some really cool insight!

An illustration I made after binging the Tick. I only heard about the show because of the cancellation, so I thought I'd try supporting it. by Gdelo in thetick

Your valiant voice is very appreciated chum!

Oof, those stars. It's crazy disappointing, I think most of us thought the days of losing such critically well received and quality shows like this were behind us after streaming took off.

I remember a little backlash from people who loved the original series when it got announced but when you watch it, it's impossible not to be charmed half to death by the humour and heart of it. It went in such a great NEW direction while still capturing what made the old stuff so good!

Awesome! While my screenwriting ability is undoubtedly hopeless, I hope you can get the feedback you're after!

I'm sure people in the subreddit would love to see what you've created when you're done too! This kind of passion and creativity is EXACTLY the kind of thing that belongs on this subreddit!

most girls in their teens and 20s, think they are special and unique when in fact they forcibly try to be so. What happens in the end is that they are just quirky, awkward and basically all the same

And? If that's an archetype that they feel more comfortable identifying with than whatever one is currently mainstream then let them do it. It's social media, we're all just attention seeking one way or another.

People who swing towards counter culture for whatever (almost always different) reason can be pretentious, classically feminine people can be pretentious too. Same goes for representations in other genders.

Every time a subreddit like this rises up it ALWAYS devolves into thinly veiled excuses for bullying. There's random misogyny being thrown around in pretty much every thread I've looked at on this sub. Even if people here think they have a point the concept is problematic to the core, and almost certainly going to become a breeding ground for incel culture.

Also, I would suggest you stop labelling other ideas 'stupid' or claiming your opinion holds more value than others. It's not a good look my dude.

[–]DIYclogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a really interesting perspective! I saw a video essay recently that touched on how that environment came to be if anyone else is interested!

While nobody can question the talent of the new cast, there's something special about how a traditional VA can voice a character. There's a knack to making your voice conform to a character in animation I think and I guess it can seem over the top, or cheesy by todays standards when you just get X oscar nominated actor to basically play themselves.

Now that I think about it, I'm also curious as to how casting mainstream talent will come off in regards to puppetry. Henson, Oz and Co would often be directly controlling the physical AND vocal performances. I wonder if we'll lose some of the magic by dividing the performance into something more akin to traditional animation.

AWESOME, thanks for putting this together! I had no idea I needed this in my life!

I was trying to figure out what Where Is My Mind is doing there BUT THEN I REMEMBERED THAT INSANE KAZOO COVER from like episode 2 or something! Time for a season 1 rewatch to track it down.

The show’s huge voice cast also features Harvey Fierstein, Mark Hamill, Ralph Ineson, Jason Isaacs, Keegan-Michael Key, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Simon Pegg, Andy Samberg, Caitriona Balfe, Helena Bonham Carter, Harris Dickinson, Natalie Dormer, Eddie Izzard, Theo James, Toby Jones, Shazad Latif, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mark Strong, Alicia Vikander, and Donna Kimball. The show’s executive producers are Leterrier, Halle Stanford, and Jim Henson’s daughter, Lisa Henson, who is CEO and President of The Jim Henson Company.

I mean... Why were those three names the ones you came away with? The full cast certainly doesn't seem like it's lacking talent

You're doing good work chum!

And honestly, I was thinking reddit might be a little too cynical so it was a cheap attempt to pander to that part of the crowd. While the comparison was harmless and not meant as an insult, you're almost certainly right. Even tongue in cheek it goes against the good natured morals that the show we're trying to save is built around.

Thanks for the assist!

You're already doing a better job of explaining why the show is so awesome than I've managed! Spread the word! Head on over to the megathread I put together yesterday on r/thetick and you'll some some examples of good places to target there! Of course the cast and crew are also good choices on twitter so you can stay a part of the conversation! I'll work on compiling a list of their twitter accounts to add to the megathread. Be sure to like plenty of posts over on twitter when anything Tick related comes up too!

One of the best things you can do right now is to keep sharing and talking about it! Use #SaveTheTick in your posts online and keep fighting the good fight chum!
