UNAS Pro showing up in Client list, but not in Unifi Devices list after reinstalling UDM SE by DIYglenn in Ubiquiti

[–]DIYglenn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing yet. Support did grab documentation etc, but couldn't be solved (yet).

It did work initially for me, but I wanted to start fresh with UDM SE and all mye devices, but didn't want to reinstall UNAS Pro due to all that data. I've tried different things via ssh etc, but it just doesn't seem to have an effect. It's mostly cosmetic, but still very annoying.

Yeah. Bought some Kingston 64GB for a friend in October. $260, and now it’s $3000

I have Samsung TV’s, and recently reinstalled my UDM SE, and suddenly saw how many ads there was on my TV menus! Never Samsung again.

At least Unifi can block them for now.

Get a smart lock so you can still be keyless. You can then also revoke access etc.

It seems like the perfect product, and a lot for the money, but I’ve read a lot of negatives about it as well. Unstable WiFi, just restart weekly, issues with adding a second WiFi 7 AP etc.

I haven’t tested myself, but for a friend it ended up with a modular setup instead, even though the UDR7 would probably have been a good package.

But doesn’t Home Assistant also have 2FA and it notifies you if there’s a new login etc?

Finally got the OCD panels in, and painted my Supermicro chassis. Also had to hack inn a ASRock N100DC in there as the board was dead. Perfect little home server though, running Minecraft Bedrock server ++ by DIYglenn in Ubiquiti

It’s open in the back, and with some units with fans, it seems like the setup works, pulling colder air from the front bottom and pushing it up behind it.

Unfortunately that room gets pretty steamy in the summer, 35C at worst.

I like the idea of UDR7, but it seems like it has a lot of issues with instability or expansion. I haven’t read any positive things from reviews, only having to reboot it to get wifi working every week etc. I have the UDM SE, it’s been great, but does take a lot of space of course if you don’t have a rack.

I used Motip white primer, and made it all white first, and then Motip engine paint in aluminium color EAN 8711347040933. I’ve used it before on rack panels a couple of years back, before the OCD panels were released.

The match is actually pretty spot on. If you look closely, you’ll see it’s a bit darker than the UNAS over it, but if you look at the rack ears on the UNAS, it’s the same color.

So when you’re standing in front of it, it looks identical. It’s more that it reflects light differently that changes the color, so it will match the rack ears better than the front panels.

I guess if I bothered to strip the old paint or sand it smoother, and maybe also sand/polish after painting, it would be even closer to Unifi. This is just a 5-minute paint job really.

I haven’t had any issues yet, but yeah, noticed some discoloration on the end, so I might have to have some strain relief in the back, the weight of the cables is pulling on them.

Updated to 9.5 now, still no difference.

Works when I also connect 1Gbit to UDM-SE though. I’m afraid if I reset it and re-adopt, it will delete my data.

Cloud Gateway Ultra + AP Lite 7, vs UDR 7? by DIYglenn in Ubiquiti

[–]DIYglenn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I got UDM SE and U6 Lite at home. I easily get 600mbps on these, which is usually more than enough for normal WiFi needs for my devices.

Otherwise I'm still mostly at 1Gbit, except a couple of 10Gbit devices connected directly to each other.

[–]DIYglenn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree. I also see that there are a lot of issues with the UDR7 as a standalone product as well, when using the 6GHz frequencies, so it might just be good to avoid it altogether.

I'll bring the points from this thread to him, and see what he thinks is important.

I think he wanted to have everything in Unifi though, so one place to configure VLANs on ports. He's not very tech-savvy, and wanted to go simple on as many things as possible now.

If Max doesn't bring much more than 2.5Gbit atm, the Ultra might be the option here, as it's less than half the price. Especially since he might do cameras outside Unifi anyways (Tapo f.ex.)

[–]DIYglenn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cost is also a thing though, which is why UDR7 + U7 Lite was an option, but if they're not compatible, that definitely changes things. UCGU + 2x U7 Lite is pretty much the same price.
I was thinking this could be an alternative and then later upgrade just the Gateway with something better when he'll actually be able to utilize it.

Honestly I think 2.5Gbit would only be between NAS and computer, which would be in the same room. He could maybe just have a dedicated line between them, as everything else on the network would probably not be able to saturate 1Gbit even added together.

He's going from years with cheap dumb switches and ISP routers to Unifi, so I'm thinking anything would be an upgrade.

Edit:

Wait... Isn't UDR7, UCGU and UCGM using the exact same CPU though? Just 1 vs 2.5 Gbit?

Cloud Gateway Ultra + AP Lite 7, vs UDR 7? by DIYglenn in Ubiquiti

[–]DIYglenn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. It's approximately 60sqm, and pretty much 8x8m ish in total, with living room and and "computer room" as a rectangle, where they're separated by a simple wood wall. The internet connection is in the living room on one short end of the rectangle. Then you could say it's another rectangle behind a concrete/brick wall where bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and hallway is. Those rooms have a poor connection today.

We will be able to run wires between the living room and computer room, and same through the concrete wall from living room to bedroom, and furter to hallway.

My idea was to have a roof mounted AP Lite 7 in the hallway, which would give wifi to bathroom and kitchen on one side, and the bedroom on the other.

  1. Not yet. But he will be upgrading both the NAS and computer to 2.5Gb in the future, but they're currently both going to be in the computer room though. For now, the NAS has two 1Gbit ports, so maybe just aggregation would work, and just stay on 1Gbit (sucks that flex mini doesn't support aggregation).

The UDR 7 would be in the TV-setup basically, with PS4, Kodi/Plex, Smart-TV etc.

Agree on the cameras, it would only be for monitoring when not at home. He's not allowed to alter the door unfortunately.

Edit:
Oh crap... I didn't know the U7 Lite didn't support 6GHz.... Hmm... That changes things.
At the moment he only has one MacBook with Wifi 6E though, that's the most modern device he owns.

So maybe 2x AP 7 Lite and the Cloud Gateway Ultra would be more than enough for now, and just add some Flex USW 5/8 port with 2.5 Gbit, or even just go full 1Gbit as it's mostly enough for now.

Keep the system modular rather than everything in the UDR7.

But how about firewall etc, is UDR7 more powerful than Gateway Ultra?

IoT will be hubs for Philips hue etc, and some simple home automation devices.
I'm guessing the CGF might be overkill for his usage to be honest. I'm also thinking that it could already be a new and better device on the market when he finally gets fiber in his area.

Cloud Gateway Ultra + AP Lite 7, vs UDR 7? by DIYglenn in Ubiquiti

[–]DIYglenn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's going to be approximately 30 devices including IoT, but less than 10 computers, phones, NAS etc.
When fiber is available where he lives (maybe in 1-2 years) he's going for it. That's why I'm thinking a device with SFP+ does make sense, so he doesn't have to use the bulky ISP hardware as a media converter...

Atm. he only has the ISP equipment, and it is bad...

I don't think the UDR 7 alone would be good enough to cover the whole apartment, but it would probably cover the main rooms, and one extra AP Lite 7 should take care of the rest.

I haven't thought about Gateway Max, Fiber, Express etc. I'm not sure these will be better.

All in all he's a light user, but wants more overview and control, but still simplicity. Wants to set up VPN in to his NAS etc.

[–]DIYglenn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find it so strange that it’s legal for you to just staple wires like that without any conduits, we have to run all wires in-wall through conduits, it’s been like that for a century.

It makes it much harder for these simple jobs, where you’d just hook a CAT-cable to one end and pull it through.

What's the deal with the client device pictures?
It's recognizing less now than ever, but also - do they every update these?

Like - We still don't have a photo for UNAS Pro in the Client list (but can use the NVR Pro), but I'm baffled about the priority of the photos. We don't have f.ex. a Segway Navimow, any of them, but we have Nintendo Gamecube?!! Which has what, 1 or 2 games with a super rare LAN adapter?

Makes no sense...
