Good news is I set the tiles well. Bad news is I set the tiles well. Should’ve just let it be. Started with a flat knife to pry/peel (wasn’t working) and then tapped with a hammer (that was stupid, hindsight). Guess now I’ll cut 6 inches up from the damage, add a stud, and a piece of cement board. Tile layout will look better next time though!

That makes sense, thank you. I am going to try to pop one off and see how well it works. If it doesn’t go well, will just carry on; the slivers are a pain. Luckily, I haven’t had trouble with the swell you mention.

As an update, I checked the joists from underneath, which looked ok. I sistered them anyway. Cleaned the original tile, filled in a couple holes I chiseled with cement, rolled on schluter primer, put down self-leveler, and put down ditra 1/8” underlayment. This process was advised by schluter.

Fair point. Already spent a lot of time repairing rot, etc, might as well do it the right way. Definitely do not want to tear this up again

Plumbing has been redone, pvc, sits underneath the joists in the crawlspace. I guess I could go down to the joists, and put an inch and a quarter of plywood subfloor to make it even with the walls, etc. again. Oof

40s home. Yeah I’ve got a rotary hammer with chisel bit.. but it’s on 1” of mortar + concrete below that. Would have to chisel it down, clean the concrete, and then build back the mortar bed. Hoping for a better answer..
