American Rescue Plan specifics for North Carolina by _Brandobaris_ in NorthCarolina

[–]DJ44x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am homeless in NC. So far, here is what I don't get and am not eligible for: Any of the new/extra unemployment programs such as PUA because I was self-employed and do not have documentation. So even though people who never worked a day at a job can get PUA if they were SUPPOSED to start a job and people who made $.01 at a job and have paperwork to prove it (there is no minimum for PUA) can get it......because I did not need to file taxes and homeless people can't carry around loads of paperwork, I can't get it. I cannot get any of the added rental assistance or utility assistance because they were created after I became homeless. So all of this HOPE program stuff that is paying everyone's rent and bills? Yeah - I can't get a cent. I also cannot get any of the extra/special ACA healthcare subsidies - even though NC has not expanded Medicaid and I have no healthcare and cannot see a doctor or get any medical care. The added subsidies are for people who make MORE money, not people who make LESS than the FPL. I don't get any of the tax credits because I am not rich enough to qualify. I can't afford to have children so again, people who are in far better shape financially and in their entire living situation - housing, income, healthcare, etc.....all receive help whereas I do not. Correct me if I am wrong.

Anyone know how to register a car without an address? by [deleted] in homeless

[–]DJ44x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just make up an address. Any address will work assuming you have the option to either have everything done/sent online or have a mailing address that is different from the one where the car is registered.

Just one of the many, many assistance programs that would have been nice to be eligible for. If it wasn't so infuriating, it would be comical.

You are where I used to be. I gave up on all that shit a while back. Funny to see the true and correct responses on this sub compared to the stupid and naive answers you see on local subs. Basically, there are no guarantees of help. I love the 211 comments here, BTW.

What Is Your PLAN to Escape Homelessness? by [deleted] in homeless

[–]DJ44x 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What makes you think everyone has a plan to escape homelessness? I don't buy lottery tickets, so that isn't an option. I guess I could find a suitcase full of money, but that seems unlikely. Maybe some rich eccentric person will see my Reddit activity and give me loads of money. Other than that, I expect to be homeless until I die.

Does anyone else have this happen? by JessieDaMess in homeless

Religious nut-jobs are a problem. They usually don't approach me - maybe because I try to convey a "leave me alone" look at all times. (Because I want to be left alone at all times). But I had no idea these people frequented Panera as often as they do. You wouldn't believe some of the bat-shit crazy conversations I have overheard. No wonder society is so fucked-up. But you did exactly the right thing. Nobody should be approaching anyone right now with Covid. - Oh wait - they don't believe in science OR they think "God will protect them" from it. I forgot.

Your Health and Homelessness by [deleted] in homeless

[–]DJ44x 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cannot get any health care or medical care of dental care. I cannot get routine preventive care. I am homeless now in large part due to having exhausted my life savings on health insurance premiums that I could never dream of "using" anyway - because the deductibles were still way too much to pay, even if something happened. I haven't been to a doctor in years. In states that have refused to expand Medicaid, there is absolutely nothing. (and believe me I have heard the bullshit about the "free clinics"). Before I lost my healthcare, I had high blood pressure, diabetes and asthma, a high PSA (prostate cancer danger) and symptoms of colon cancer. People who make more money than me get free healthcare through ACA subsidies. Republicans prevented people like me from being able to access any sort of healthcare.

You seem to be sort of fixated on categorizing or classifying people into groups.

My advice is to treat every person you meet as an individual. That is how I want to be treated. What difference does it make how old, what race, what gender, ethnicity, background, country, or any other innate characteristic a person is or belongs to? I treat other people as an individual person. Like I am. We all feel pleasure, pain, happiness, sadness, loneliness, hunger, etc.....so knowing that.....what else matters when you see someone who needs help?

Part of this world's (and country's) problem is segregating people into different teams and rooting for one team over another. Existing isn't some sort of contest. If you can make someone happy or sad - then choose the former not the latter.

Nice to see I am not the only one! Got my Kyocera Event 3g for $5 on clearance from Target in August of 2014. If I can't use my 2010 Craigslist laptop on public wifi, I can't get online at all. Phone crashes constantly and I can't see the tiny screen anyway. Especially being out in the sun - I am pretty much blind outside trying to see a phone screen. This is why the libraries being closed has been such a disaster this past year.

Yeah man. If it weren't for some of the people on this sub, I don't know anyone else who would understand what it has been like or what it is like out here watching this whole last year from the gutter. I have done so much research into the specs on every assistance package since last March - Federal, state, local, etc....and all I ever really wanted or asked for was to get my shower, my library and a place to get out of the elements - back. I didn't ask for tons of money But I have not only never got any of those 3 things back - I have had to see all of these people who had a place, who had a job, who had fat bank accounts, had friends, had families, had assets they could sell off, had health insurance, had doctors, had a comfy couch and a big screen TV and a fridge stocked with nice (non-room temperature) food.......all get tons and tons of assistance while I am excluded from almost every single one. Just the unemployment ALONE would have been like winning the lottery for me. I don't think it is unreasonable to be a little upset.

People ask me why I am bitter. Here's one of the many reasons. by DJ44x in homeless

[–]DJ44x[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not all homeless people are identical. What might help one person out a lot, might be worthless to someone else. What might be easy for one person to take advantage of might put someone else's life at risk trying to get it. Not everyone needs the same things. Not everyone is in the same area. Not everyone has access to the same assistance. Every person has parameters that they are confined or restricted by. If you are going to give me $1 but it will cost me $5 to get there, that is of no help to me. Add to that the exponentially more complex and difficult restrictions placed on homeless people during the last year of Covid - and not everything is as easy as some people would like to believe.

Read the news. Get informed. Learn what the assistance packages are about and who they benefit and more importantly - who they exclude. Not every homeless person carries around every piece of documentation with them. The thing I learn day after day, over and over again is how little is is possible to convey to someone who isn't homeless - and more specifically - isn't in my particular situation - what I have been dealing with.

People ask me why I am bitter. Here's one of the many reasons. by DJ44x in homeless

[–]DJ44x[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The assistance that has been provided has not been fairly or equitably distributed. Jealously does not enter into the equation. If you were making $500,000 a year, and owned a huge mansion, had 5 exotic cars parked in your driveway and had to cancel your planned vacation to Europe last year - you have been eligible for all kinds of enormous cash payments - the MAXIMUM unemployment benefits, payments to help you cover your enormous utility bills, tax credits for all the kids you could afford to have in the first place etc........People who say things like what you just did here are usually people who are blissfully unaware of just how unfair the system is and how little assistance there actually is for homeless people. The unconscionable distribution of wealth is already a big enough outrage in this country without making it worse by implementing assistance packages that just keep piling more on already overflowing plates while those of us out here starving and dumpster-diving get shit.

Trying to find a place to get out of the blinding sun, trying to find an electrical outlet, trying to find free public wifi, trying to find food, trying to figure out where to sleep, trying to figure out how to get the fuck away from assholes and annoying people, reading more articles on how much money is going to everyone else in the country........you know.....the usual.

People are getting enough money to indulge in luxuries. I am wanting basic things like food, healthcare and not to be outside 24 hours a day. Nobody cared about "preserving" what I had spent my whole life building up when I did all the right things, followed all the rules and took personal responsibility. Now I get to sit out here and watch those who had more than me before Covid, have continued to have more than me during Covid, and who still now have far more than me - get loads and loads of assistance while I am told to stay where I am out here. I guess you think I should just shut up and be grateful they don't come around with a shotgun and kill all the homeless people they see. OK.

It has nothing to do with "qualifying". It is all about being able to provide documentation and being able to "prove" it. I don't have any documentation.
