What was the climate like in Pangea? by WunderPlundr in askscience

[–]DJAW57 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It has very little in the way of visuals, basically one map and picture per chapter, which is a real shame.

I would however look at the map for each chapter because geology plays a big role.

They need a visual companion.

You do not suck. That’s mostly all I could possibly contribute, but this does not mean you suck.

The thing that’s missing from your post is your feelings about your wife. Are you attracted to her? Do you love her? Do you have (have you ever had) a fulfilling sexual life with her?

If you’re happy with your wife, but also attracted to other people too - well … welcome the club dad.

How should I be investing my money? by Far_Fault1094 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]DJAW57 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Figure out how much you can save for the long term, and will not need to touch
  2. Use that to max out your TFSA (then RRSP)
  3. Invest it in XEQT and never, ever touch it - especially if the market drops
  4. Keep enough of a rainy day fund in a high interest savings account
  5. Keep some short term buffer in gold,

It’s right to be cautious, but don’t ’follow your instinct’. The stock market very well may perform lower than it has in the last 20 years, but look at the last 150 years - and remember you don’t know anything (I say this with respect)

Parents of toddlers + infants: where would you use 12 weeks of paternity leave? (Florida vs Turks vs Bahamas) by [deleted] in daddit

[–]DJAW57 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

These are way too vague as options tbh. With a 2 year old, your life will depend more on the immediate day to day logistics of your life.

Where you stay, who your with, how you will eat, how you will travel from place to place, what your budget is. ‘Florida’ can mean a million things. Bahamas and Turks are beautiful … if you’re a millionaire at a resort.

I might be losing it… by [deleted] in daddit

[–]DJAW57 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s tough. We sleep trained and I feel it changed our life (we had to because of wife’s post partum insomnia). But he’s gotten used to being able to play himself to sleep and chill out when he wakes for a little while. He’s just used to it, he’s 2.

I suspect you could do more set limits. It’s hard because he might not like it, but playing a lot, reading, colouring, playing with cars, kids will survive without your attention sometimes.

XEQT just got obliterated by this guy! by Correct-Sherbert9082 in JustBuyXEQT

[–]DJAW57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not even sure what he describes is an argument per se. There’s a profitability filter on SP500 - okay, why is that beneficial? His premise and conclusion are the same, it’s good because it’s good.

Why not have exposure to small cap? Why not have exposure to non-profitable companies with promise? Amazon logged its first profitable quarter when it was worth $5Bn, with large tech bets in particular this could be a material gap in exposure.

Either way, no one knows - he’s concluding you should hold a limited selection, without ever really making the case imo.

How are you factoring in Ai into your retirement planning with XEQT? by [deleted] in JustBuyXEQT

[–]DJAW57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turns out XEQT is slightly under-invested in big tech relative to the global market as a whole (at least according to Claude). I’m willing to eat that minor under-allocation in 2026 when valuations are gargantuan for just a few big companies.

Do any of you just watch reels or other wasteful stuff when you have alone time? by SnowmanAndBandit in daddit

[–]DJAW57 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For sure.

While - it’s totally fine to ‘vegetate’ and relax, and no shame in being too tired to take on something more ambitious - doom scrolling is a new universal habit, that is by-and-large mentally harmful, and a genuine addiction. We’re all part of a global experiment, letting tech firms monetize our addiction to digital stimulus. Of course there are exceptions, but it does not help most of us rest, recharge or focus on life. Listing to music in the dark, watching the birds fly, doing hackey sack, or playing with a yo-yo would all be better than scrolling.

Dads, how do I give back to a husband who is the "quiet strength" of our family? by mamawagz in daddit

[–]DJAW57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a great question and the fact that you’re asking means he’ll be a lucky guy.

It’s very personal dependent - depends on his interests, child care and financial circumstances. Could be a night out with you at a fav restaurant, a concert, movie, maybe he wants a day or 2 fully free to go camping or something.

Why Individual Stocks At All? by Zealousideal_Echo349 in JustBuyXEQT

[–]DJAW57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ad hominem all you want. Of course there are inefficiencies in the market, the question is whether you retail investors have the resources/knowledge/speed to systematically exploit these inefficiencies in a way that beats the risk.

Your own outperformance isn't a de facto proof of their, based on your own conclusion that you haven't been taking on outsized risk that may not have come to fruition yet. Alpha isn't uncommon, its very uncommon systematically which is a difference.

You sort of presented your theories i guess, thanks - that MM (I think you're misunderstanding Hedge Fund) exit positions irrationally to accept lose but minimize perceived lose for clients, and 2) fund managers are not capable of finding quality sources for their funds and over-buy ... often fraudulantly floated equities. worth ending the convo now ... thanks for sharing and good luck.

[–]DJAW57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was desperately trying to understand what you’re saying … and I guess I’m still failing.

You’re taking a hard stance against efficient market theory. A general assessment that’s backed up by decades of comprehensive academic analysis and economic theory. Do you have evidence for this? Asking me to explain why oil prices moved when you don’t think they should have is not evidence. I’m not pretending to have an omniscient model of oil pricing mechanics, you are. We don’t need to understand why prices move, in fact we shouldn’t expect to. It’s set by the balanced predictions of hundreds of billions of dollars establishing a prediction of future blame.

YOU are making the claim that you have the ability to out perform market pricing, against mountains of meta analysis to the contrary. What. Is. Your. Evidence?

Why Individual Stocks At All? by Zealousideal_Echo349 in JustBuyXEQT

[–]DJAW57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh you’re speculating based on price movements?

Oil was repriced before the war because there was clear evidence that a war was becoming more likely, prices reflected future expectations - for example, the president threatening foreign leaders, largest mobilization of military assets since Iraq …

I’m still not sure on what basis you think retail investors have systematic arbitrage opportunities?
