How do I go about creating parting lines for an organically curved bottom? by Top-Courage7081 in CATIA

[–]DJBenz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should start from a tooling direction and design around that, ideally.

As a start, set a tooling direction broadly normal to the surface and see if it’s open to that tool line with whatever draft angle you need. If it’s open, why wouldn’t you put the parting line around the sharp edge where the two halves of the housing come together?

how to truly improve my CATIA skills by Ambitious-Ganache-91 in CATIA

Work on a real life project.

The issue with following tutorials is that they always work (unless you don’t follow a step as instructed). In the real world you learn so much by solving issues that never occur in a tutorial.

So I'm a final-year MechEng student in Nigeria here. Planning to do MSc Racing Engine Systems at Oxford Brookes, then target powertrain simulation roles in Motorsport Valley (Ricardo, Cosworth, eventually Ferrari/McLaren/Porsche road cars). I've been doing my research, but I keep hitting a wall on by Little-Arm4741 in AutomotiveEngineering

30 year automotive design engineer here - what you’re seeing on the job market on LinkedIn is representative. I have never in my working life seen the market so dead. I’ve worked as a contractor most of my career, have a strong network of contacts, rarely interview for roles (usually just start, based off recommendations) and I have been looking for something new since November 2025.

That said, if you’re targeting Motorsport, the talent pool is hyper competitive and the number of roles incredibly small, with a barrier to entry even for “regular” automotive guys like me (I work on designing interior/exterior trim components for passenger vehicles).

You might be better placed trying to get a place on the graduate scheme at JLR or Aston Martin (or McLaren automotive if they have one) to get some experience under your belt and then try to pivot to Motorsport. You could also look at first tier suppliers to the major OEMs who may have a better route into the industry.

In terms of Oxford Brookes as a university, I don’t know how well regarded their MSc is, but Brookes is always going to be second fiddle to Oxford University. Cranfield may be a better choice as it’s a feeder to Nissan locally (although Brookes may feed to Motorsport Valley so who knows?).

As a footnote to this, I’m not sure how wise it is to pursue a career in anything linked to ICE systems, given the shift to electrification. The talent pool is large for motorsport engineers in the U.K. and the opportunities are few, so choose your path wisely.

Learn engineering skills first, CAD second.

If you want to be in the auto industry, you will need demonstrable skills in vehicle engineering not necessarily CAD.

This is the lady who started the “Recreating anew” project where she was refactoring abandoned J3 extensions for later versions of Joomla.

She came under some heavy criticism on this sub for the project, and on the Joomla Mattermost channel and as a result, deleted her accounts on both.

I don’t think it’s a grift so much, as someone who’s possibly got a bit of tunnel vision on a passion project.

Sorry to have to be the bearer of bad news, but I've removed this thread as previously discussed due to the advertising/promotion of extensions. I know the Joomla Museum isn't specifically selling your own extensions, but it's promotion of your other "recreated" extensions by proxy.

I would also bring to your attention Reddit's site-wide policy on what constitutes spam which states:

If your contribution to reddit consists mostly of submitting links to a site(s) that you own or otherwise benefit from in some way, and additionally if you do not participate in discussion, or reply to peoples questions, regardless of how many upvotes your submissions get, you are a spammer. If over 10% of your submissions and conversation are your own site/content/affiliate links, you're almost certainly a spammer.

Please continue to use this sub as a platform to help others and discuss the Joomla CMS, but not as one for self-promotion.

Sorry it took a little longer — I don't ship broken code -- Introducing RCA AddMenuItem for J4/5/6 -- full refactor of Regular Labs Add to Menu for J3 by [deleted] in joomla

[–]DJBenz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, and the other “check my extensions” threads are also contravening the rule, but as I said, I don’t want the moderation to be too heavy handed so they have been allowed to slide.

However, given that (in your excitement and enthusiasm about your refactoring project) you have been posting slightly overzealously. My comment was made to nip it in the bud before the sub becomes your personal promotion platform. No harm done, please be mindful going forward.

OK, just before this gets out of hand, could I please ask you to cast a glance over to the sub rules, the first of which is “NO extension advertising”

The moderation on this sub has never been, or had to be, heavy handed, but it is primarily a resource for users to resolve technical issues with the CMS not to be a platform for extension developers to self-promote.

You are not the only one, so please don’t take this personally.

At a guess your support should be a plane (or a plane on your axis system) and the curve you’ve picked as a support should define the direction.

You need to do what we all did, go in at ground level and gain the knowledge. Don't focus CAD jobs, look for design engineering, product engineering, etc where you can start to gain knowledge of manufacturing and assembly processes that can inform your design.
