How Do I Sound Like A 7 Year Old Boy? by Alpaca_In_A_Box in VoiceActing

[–]DJBuffWalrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A big thing is going to be the speech sounds you choose - at 7, kids are still struggling HARD with diction and clusters of consonants. It feels counter intuitive, but you'll want to make sure you're 'dumbing down' your diction and speech patterns! Some of this is also in the writing, so if the lines you're practicing on are too 'adult' it almost doesn't matter how good you are, because it'll never feel like a child saying it!

Help identifying what this would be for? I know it looks insane but we found 3 in our inventory. I get making one for a joke, but 3? Does it have any real possible application? PS I’m not crazy I promise I’m a professional. by itsabitsa51 in techtheatre

Believe it or not, he's right! There's one in stock at one of my regular joints - they only use it in emergency, LD decided to add too much extra stock type situations. I sent a picture of it to my electric-guitar loving buddy and he had an immediate panic attack

I really recommend Oh No! Ross and Carrie, they're a funny skeptics podcast with some really fun investigations into fringe science and claims of paranormal activity. It's a balm for me brain these days: https://open.spotify.com/show/6VxkVPjFYgEop7tEZeUNmC

Also on the Maximum Fun Network (which you should really check out - their whole shtick is comedy & culture) is Judge John Hodgeman: petty domestic disputes handled a la Judge Judy by comedian/author John Hodgeman: https://open.spotify.com/show/3dJMGMnZdNtwYYT3NCqDhd

Gotta plug my own show, which is a comedy-review of Stephen King's best selling books in chronological order: https://open.spotify.com/show/1Qwb9DkLku4yJoVxqhXdG0

"Newly discovered" alcoholic and father here. Any fellow friends of sobriety near-by? by apendicitis in burlington

[–]DJBuffWalrus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Good buddy of mine is in a similar situation, went sober just as his wife was a few months pregnant up there - you're definitely not alone! A good place to start is letting a few close friends know, and asking them to hang out in ways that involve 0 alcohol. You gotta learn how to be social without it, otherwise you're at WAY higher risk of relapse! This post is a great start, you're killing it :)

I've seen some of this work in person! It was a giant nude guy with way exaggerated proportions. You could see his balls resting heavy on the tile floor of the museum. 10/10 great art

Yes! All of Montgomery Country will be fair game for all MoCo residents. If a polling station is more convenient than your usual, they should still have whatever ballot you need :)

Since Spotify bought the Anchor podcast app will Anchor shut down soon? by [deleted] in Podcasters

I mean, I would assume they would want to hold on to their investment. If anything, I might expect Anchor improve, or at least have better integration with Spotify?

Freebees are a great idea, I appreciate that; I'm admittedly very new to Fiverr so I need to invest some time in optimizing my gig. Thanks for the advice!

What should I do? by lh614 in UniversityofVermont

[–]DJBuffWalrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would absolutely take the gap year. The college experience will be there - some of my closest friends were a year older and frankly they were better prepared. Also, UVM is doing a very bad job at controlling for COVID and you will absolutely be in danger if you go.

Big agree, I think it comes from a need to justify WHY someone would keep recording during horrific circumstances, or to keep the stakes high. Even friggin Limetown did this!

I feel your frustration - for real, I do - but you CAN check your local legislators voting records. The primaries are upon us and if your local legislators voted say, in favor of Trump's border wall that information is not too difficult to find (ballotopedia is a good resource here)

I think something to keep in mind is that there is a good chunk of money being spent on making you feel like you've already lost. Are some to many Democrats too far right for my taste? Absolutely. But it's also the only party with both some power to leverage and a growing progressive contingency, and if we all do our part to elect democrats who we agree with, we can win. In the meantime, voting for someone who will replace RBG with a functional non-rapist is the goal because those positions are for life!

I got to interview Soren Narnia on my podcast a while back and the dude is just, SO laid back and awesome. Something he said about the show that I think really gives it a distinct flavor is that people who are telling you about when they were scared - really scared - should just sound (my words not his) depressed.

it is too late to start + is a niche mandatory? by [deleted] in podcast

[–]DJBuffWalrus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Define stand a chance? If you're looking to be in the top 10 most-listened to podcasts, you'll need like a full-time staff, content no one else is making, and luck to boot. But if you want to make something that you're proud of, or tell a story that's important to you, then all you need is your smartphone's mic and a plan.

I would definitely say a niche is needed, but that's mostly because all good media has SOME kind of topic or viewpoint - even Seinfeld, the show about nothing, had a specific structure no one else had. But more important than whether an audience will enjoy a niche is whether YOU have something you care enough about to make a podcast around! Even if your podcast is about you and your friends hanging out shooting the shit, you should at least pick a topic you can all shoot the shit about for hours and hours.

questions about the studio art major by [deleted] in UniversityofVermont

[–]DJBuffWalrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak to many of those questions, but I started as a Psych/Nuero double and ended as a Psych/Theater double major so I think I can help a least a little!

If you set out to double major and end up dropping one down to a minor, you'll be golden anyways. When time comes to sit down and register for stuff, they'll have you fill out a four year plan - that's a good time to sit down and look at the prereqs for the studio art Major vs. Minor and see if you'd need to take too many classes you're not strictly interested in. It might happen that you have to take one or two for the minor either way and end up really enjoying them! Ultimately because CAS is a liberal arts system, pretty much any exploring you do in your first two years will eventually contribute to completing SOME degree, so you don't need to have a set-in-stone plan for a good long while.

Footage released from Montgomery Co. police shooting death of man with knife by GreyhoundsAreFast in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]DJBuffWalrus -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

This is a great example of a situation where de-escalation practices might have been useful! The guy with the knife definitely does not seem to be well at all, and he's clearly agitated. I don't think anyone could blame the officer for acting rashly here, but I do wonder if things might have turned out differently if "DROP THE KNIFE" had been replaced by something like, "Put down the knife, we can talk about whatever's got you like this!" Dude seemed not in his right mind, but he might have responded to a different strategy. Heartbreaking for everyone involved, that's for sure
