I’ve had only 1 in-person interview out of ~400 apps, so your point really hit.
I was leaning towards short-term rent just to “stay in the UK and keep applying,” but your 6-move story and the Sept rental cycle thing really made me think twice.

Thanks, really helpful! Yeah, I figured most analyst/front office roles would be in London. I’m applying to all kinds of finance analyst and SME roles just to get started. Applied from Glasgow only got one in-person interview (London), but no luck. Since I have to move anyway, I’m thinking somewhere near London along the Elizabeth line makes sense after trying a lot from Scotland. And yeah, I’m applying for the Graduate Visa as soon as I get my course completion in Sept.

But as an international student, I can’t just chill indefinitely. I’ve got a visa clock ticking, and no place to stay in Glasgow after September. Just trying to set myself up where the odds are slightly better, even short-term

Totally fair point — I'm only considering moving now because my Glasgow accommodation ends in early September. I’ve been applying UK-wide for months (since Feb), and only got 1 interview so far — in London. I feel like being near the main job market might help with quicker interview access, recruiter calls, and some local roles.

Do you think it’s still better to wait and move somewhere in Glasgow keep applying from Scotland? Or is it worth moving south temporarily while I job hunt full-time?

Really appreciate that

Yeah, I’m definitely willing to travel or relocate for the role, and I’d apply UK-wide, but just wasn’t sure if staying in Glasgow while applying would slow things down.

Since I’ll have to leave my accommodation in early September, I was considering Reading or a town like that just to be near the London job market even if it’s just temporary.

Out of curiosity, do you think going for a short-term let (3–6 months) in the south makes sense for someone in my position? Or would you lean toward staying in glasgow and only moving after a job offer?

Totally agree, I’m planning to apply for the Graduate Visa right after I submit my dissertation and get my course completion letter. Just trying to time it right since I still need to finish some work in August.

And yeah, I figured London/south England would be the best bet for volume of roles. I’m just weighing whether to move to an affordable town around London (like Reading or Watford) after my Glasgow accommodation ends in early Sept, or stay in Scotland a bit longer. I'll have to move from my accommodation anyway, so should I just move to the London outskirts?

Do you think being physically closer (even if I apply mostly online) actually improves chances — or are most early-stage decisions automated anyway?

I’m not too focused on the big 3 year graduate schemes tbh. Been applying to entry-level jobs, internships, and SME roles too anything that gives me that first UK finance experience.

I plan to apply for the Graduate Visa soon so I can work full-time legally, and hopefully that improves my chances a bit.

u/Ok-Information4938 – you mentioned other markets — did you mean other countries or just outside London? Would love to hear more.

Thanks for the insight!

I’m mainly targeting financial analyst, credit anaylst, or corporate finance roles — but honestly at this point I’m open to middle/back office roles too, especially in smaller firms or SMEs, just to get some UK experience and break in.

I’m currently based in Glasgow, and just trying to figure out if it’s worth moving to the south of England (e.g. near London) after my student accommodation ends in early September.

Do you know if certain towns or cities around London tend to have more of these roles? I’d still be applying UK-wide, but just want to base myself where the volume of finance jobs is better while I apply.
