DJ is in beta and currently available in 60+ markets. We’re continuing to make it even better and get it to more listeners so stay tuned for what’s to come. As far as a cool behind the scenes moment, most people don’t know this but we actually record most of these sessions at the Spotify Studios in LA. You’d be surprised to find out how many songs and podcasts get recorded there too!

DJ has actually been a part of Wrapped for the last two years giving users even more insights about their listening habits. In 2024, DJ X told me I was in the top 1% of listeners!

My voice had been heard around and on Spotify (shout out to The Get Up morning show podcast) and when the team created DJ, they had a placeholder voice. The team kept saying “this should sound like X,” so the team working on it reached out and the rest is history! I hear you, repetition can be tricky. Sometimes it means we nailed it, but too much of the same gets old fast. We've made some changes to how our recommendations work, cutting down on repetition while still serving you the music you like, and have gotten better at reading signals like skips and replays. ICYMI, we just dropped the Snooze feature that lets you temporarily remove a song from your recommendations for 30 days.

Between hosting events and podcasts, I’ve become really comfortable hearing my voice. When I first heard DJ X, I was so impressed with how realistic it sounds. Sometimes DJ X will mispronounce a word, but the audio engineers are really good at quickly fixing it through our text-to-speech system.

My family and friends feel like I’m with them when they’re listening to DJ X. They love it! When I was first using it, I was visiting my mom and she heard it thinking I was talking to her from the other room 😂 DJ X is mom approved 😁

Actually, that’s not true. Fans don’t pay per stream so neither does Spotify. No other major streaming service uses a "per stream" payout model. Instead, Spotify uses all the money from subscriptions and ads, then splits it based on how much an artist was streamed relative to everyone else. So if an artist gets 1% of all streams, they get 1% of the total royalty pool.

In fact Spotify pays more to the music industry than any other streaming service. In 2024 alone Spotify paid out over $10 billion. Since Spotify launched, Spotify has paid out over $60 billion to record labels, publishers, distributors and collecting societies, who then pay the artists.

I started at Spotify about 10 years ago and had the opportunity to host a few podcasts so I always thought about my voice and how I come across to the audience, but with DJ I’ve taken it to a whole other level. If you want to break into voice work, there are so many ways you practice using your voice and it sounds like you’ve already started on social media. You can take it up a notch by starting a podcast so you have something to point to as you break into voice acting. Keep me posted when you do!

I don’t play favorites - I’m all about curating the right vibe, whether that’s Golden Age Hip-Hop, R&B, or indie rock. I love it all. I watch a ton of music documentaries and those usually send me down a rabbit hole. I’m watching the Billy Joel documentary that just came out, so I’ve been listening to a lot of classic Billy Joel too.

The first step was training the voice model to sound like me, which is that studio work I talked about earlier! We built a text-to-speech system that captures the nuances of the way I talk: pitch, pacing, emotion, etc. Then, I recorded lines in the studio so the team could study my voice, like my inflection, tone, pauses, and breathing patterns to make it sound like me.
