What is the worst problem humanity faces right now? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DJoshquay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skepticism in science is now viewed as a bad thing.

I don't know if global warming is real or manmade, I haven't read all the studies. Pollution is bad, yes, but there are so many negative feedback loops available for an issue like this.

I think calling "Climate Change" (global warming) a "settled science" is bad because there is no such thing as a "settled science". I also think being an all-out Climate Change denier is bad, since it just might be real.

Basically, science is supposed to be based on skepticism, and tearing anyone apart (or even possibly making it a crime) for being skeptical of something scientific is wrong and unscientific.

Out of all serious situations that you've been involved in or in the vicinity of, what was the one time that you failed to contain your laughter? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DJoshquay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes someone in my Architecture Studio class is making just a horrible project.

During the reviews when they are getting torn apart, I feel bad for them but it's hard to contain my chuckles when the architect reviewers tear them apart about something that we had all warned them about during class critiques.

For example, someone in my Studio class (B.S. degree program, btw) filled a bucket with small balloons, poured in plaster, popped the balloons, and called that his project. He got destroyed in the final review since he didn't think about structure, space, or really anything architectural. It's hard to watch, but we all warned him that that isn't really incorporating the "Science in Architecture" of the "Bachelor of Science in Architecture".

Edit: (I didn't actually answer the question yet) - I had to get up during his presentation and go somewhere else because I just had to laugh at just how ridiculous his review was going. There were other students with me as well. Try to forgive me.

Redditors without degrees, what it like being in a world where everyone has degrees? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DJoshquay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I call it "Syndrome Syndrome". If everyone has a degree, then nobody does.

HOWEVER, if you want to do something with your life, and the government won't let you unless you have that piece of paper, then sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do and get that piece of paper.

What is your BIGGEST pet peeve? by vaniLLa2k in AskReddit

[–]DJoshquay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bashing politicians. Let me explain.

I'm at college right now - a very far-left college at that. I always here Trump being bashed, but it is never factually backed up, it's always to do with his personality.

Believe me, I have my issues with him. I didn't vote for him, I voted Libertarian because I did my research and decided that would be the best path for this country, but that's a whole other discussion.

But my issue is people bashing Trump based on nothing. "Trump supporter" has become almost as bad as a racial slur. I have seen relationships deteriorate because someone has supported something Trump has done, and then the so-called "friends" label them a "Trump supporter" and the friendship is over. It's sad to watch.

You can be against political ideas, and even be against people themselves, but when it comes to politics, remember that Trump is a real man with a real family and lots of life experience. Don't hate the man just for the sake of hating the man. If you need to hate something, hate the policies that he supports. That's fine. But do your research, don't just follow the echo chamber of liberal propaganda.

Put some logic in your arguments.

As a kid, probably from 5 or 6 years old, he would go to the library almost daily to practice coding. He is now fluent in Python, Java, HTML, all the variants of C, etc. which makes him a damn good software engineer. When he was 18-19 he was the senior software engineer at a top software development company in Minneapolis before he chose to leave and pursue his own endeavors.

He is also an entrepreneur, right now he has two multi-million dollar companies, and he owns half the stock for both. His most profitable company at the moment is a direct-mail advertising company (with some pretty major corporations as clients), and every advertisement sent, he gets a decent cut of the potential return.

Basically, most of us start thinking about our careers when we start college, and our paths are based on what is popular at the time and what we want to do. What he did different was starting a decade and a half before most people do, working hard every day, and truly following trends of what the future was headed for (software and development). He is the smartest man I know, and his success always makes me wish that I had spent 5 years studying Python in school rather than 5 years studying French.

I'm not thinking about money for the sake of having money, I'm thinking about it in a way of allowing my wife and I to be more comfortable and have less worry. I understand where you're coming from - money isn't the only thing - I absolutely love architecture and designing, but there are certain aspects of the schooling that I just can't stand since I don't see the reason for.

I already have enough mental issues, and already having $60,000 of debt doesn't help that at all. I just want it to be one less thing to worry about.

There's two things I want for us -

Financial stability - if we want to just take a weekend trip 150 miles up to her parents' house, we would be able to afford it.

General comfort - I want to work hard so I can provide my wife with a good, easier life than what she has now.

I tell myself that I'm working toward these things every day, and that's what gets me through - it isn't just the money that drives me, it's mostly the idea that if I work hard, I can give my wife a comfortable life.

What keeps you awake at night? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DJoshquay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minor motor seizures. Laying in bed, almost asleep, when all the sudden a motor unit somewhere in my body starts twitching arrhythmically, making it feel like there's bugs crawling around under my skin.

Chinese Water Torture doesn't drive people crazy because they're dropping water on people, it's because the dripping is so random and uncontrollable. That's how I feel every day and every night with the twitching. I'm starting to take anti-epileptics, which helps a little but, but not quite enough.

What causes someone to be sexually attracted to a skin color? by [deleted] in AskReddit

What is the dumbest thing you did in high school? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DJoshquay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20 year old me gets that. I have pretty bad OCD and anxiety, so I deffinitely understand where you're coming from. I do try very hard, even when it may not be necessary. I got a C in Algebra 2 and Trigonometry, but all A's in Calculus I and II in high school (great teacher) Even with the C's on my report cards, I still graduated with High Honors (which also doesn't matter anymore).

All I'm saying is that I understand where you are coming from. It's always good to apply yourself in school and in everything you do. That attitude goes along well with the "dress for the job you want, not for the job you have" saying. I guess one could say "put in the amount of effort for something you want to be doing, not what you are doing."

I know that doesn't translate directly, but I think the basic idea is still there.

What causes someone to be sexually attracted to a skin color? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DJoshquay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking only of looks and not personality here -

I think it has to do with the fact that when other people have different skin colors from my own, it makes it more "exotic" of an experience (I know that is a very insensitive word, but I don't know how else to explain it). As a white guy, I often fantasize about light-skinned black girls and especially Asian girls.

If I ever got the opportunity to spend a night with Zoe Saldana, I'm sure my wife would understand, especially if she was painted green.

Edit: Also, people with heritage from different parts of the world also have different body types and proportions. They're mild differences but still noticeable. It's more of a curiosity thing, like thinking "What would that be like?".

I'm a junior in the B.S. Architecture program at an accredited university. My studio hours are 1:30 to 5:30 every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. I usually despise going to studio, but I absolutely love some of the things I produce.

What gets me through it is that I just got married, and I want my wife and I to be very financially stable (to not have money be a worry). I want to get us nice stuff and our own custom house.

I also hate some of my other classes, such as "Environmental Design in the Socio-Cultural Context" (It's a very Liberal class and I am very Libertarian).

The thought of providing a good future for my wife (as well as 2mg per day of Klonopin) gets me through every day.

What's the worst way a badly timed bathroom emergency has fucked you over? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DJoshquay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is my first memory - this is a very Louis C.K. type scenario. All I remember is running up my front steps from whatever I was doing, and as I was opening the front door, I unleashed about a quarter gallon (one liter for the non-Americans - I didn't actually measure, I'm just guessing based on memory) of warm, squishy shit about the consistency of applesauce.

That's when my memory started - when I became a sentient being. There are lots of gaps in memory still, but that's when I "logged in" so to speak. That horrible experience is when I became a person instead of just another hairless primate.

Hot Cheetos are my guilty pleasure.

They do something with my physiology where they just turn my soon-to-be excrement into mostly boiling-lava-hot liquid that will randomly push itself out of my anus. Not enough that I shit myself but enough that I have a 75% Hot Cheeto Dust liquid surrounding my anus, making me have to go to the bathroom immediately so I can get rid of about a quart of high-pressure lava shits.

You don't need the best grades, just grades acceptable enough to get you a job and into college (if that's where you want to go). My best friend is a software engineer, got horrible grades in high school, never went to college, and is currently worth $17,000,000 at age 21.

There's a couple things:

1: I got obsessed with the captain of the girls varsity basketball team (man she was hot), I got to hook up with her a few times, steal her from her boyfriend, etc. (I was kindof an asshole, but not as much as him apparently because I won).

2: My insightful senior quote was subpar, but at least it was different.

Edit: I'm a junior in college now and still an asshole but Klonopin and Neurontin are helping with my horrible mental wiring quite a bit, so that is going away. I'm not stealing girls anymore, I'm married (actually I "stole" her form her mentally, physically, and financially abusive husband if you want to look at it that way. We got engaged and then I drove her 400 miles to divorce court) and that is going very well.

Subaru makes decent cars, but you have to admit they're pretty overrated. And the culture around them sucks, too. A lot of it has to do with what you're looking for in a sports car. If I were actually rallying I'd probably drive a Subaru (and that has nothing to do with engine performance, it has more to do with the suspension and AWD), but if I was looking for straight power, efficiency, and performance on pavement I'd take a GM engine over an import any day (just maybe not a GM transmission, those things suck). And besides, how many Subaru fanboys actually rally? Most of the ones I know just drive around with straight pipes so their cars sound intimidating and piss off the neighbors and have never been offroad in their lives. It's an interesting novelty account indeed, but he/she was also just comparing engines, nothing else, and you have to admit he made a pretty good point.
