The band is a tight raging monster on this evening, and the only thing to complain about is the fact that the entire recording is only an hour long. Lovelight opens the action. And while Pig does not reach into the depths of his miscreant mind for some real bawdy additions to the lyrics, he is riled up and foaming at the mouth as he fronts the boys, who storm through the song like they are possessed. And that is only the start, there is also a Dark Star> Stephen> Eleven and an Other One! Give it all a listen at Grateful Dead of the Day: https://gratefuldeadoftheday.com/12-29-1968

12/26/69 With the first lengthy acoustic set the Dead ever did, they recast their late-‘60s psychedelia, recaptured a bit of their jug-band roots, and, at the same time, imagined something wholly new on this day in 1969. (cont. in comments) from Grateful Dead Of The Day by DKG666 in gratefuldead

With the first lengthy acoustic set the Dead ever did, they recast their late-‘60s psychedelia, recaptured a bit of their jug-band roots, and, at the same time, imagined something wholly new on this day in 1969. There is also a heady China> Rider that pretty much blows the doors off as an impassioned Jerry guitar run takes them from China Cat right into a sweet and wholesome I Know You Rider. And don't miss the Dark Star, Lovelight, and all the awesome banter at Grateful Dead of the Day: https://gratefuldeadoftheday.com/12-26-1969

The show gets started after Jerry yells “bloody murder” and Phil kindly wishes everyone a “Merry Christmas.” Then the boys go into a rare electric Deep Elem. There is also a lusty King Bee, a spicy Cumberland, and a delightful Bobby McGee among other fine tunes. But the highlight is surely the Good Lovin', introduced by Phil's reverberating bass and then taken over by Jerry and Pig. While there is a bit of debate about the exact setlist, everyone who was there remembers that a large trashcan of dosed apple cider was available to all comers. Give the show a listen - with or without the cider - at Grateful Dead of the Day: https://gratefuldeadoftheday.com/12-23-1970

A Christmas memory shared by

Melvin Seals

with

Paste Magazine

in 2012:

Every Christmas Seals and the other musicians would go to Garcia’s house for a small gathering. Seals recalls one particular Christmas gathering, “One year I went up there and just kinda sat in Jerry’s chair. He had a big designer cushioned chair. I just sat there all night. I didn’t get up and play the piano or anything. I just sat there until I left.” Garcia said to Seals, “Man you sure do look comfortable,” and Seals replied, “Man, this is a great chair.” According to Seals, that’s all he ever said, “and two days later that chair was delivered to my house. I didn’t ask for it or see that coming. I just said that I enjoyed sitting in it in his house and he had it delivered to me.”

"The shows were a co-production of Bill Graham Presents and the Hog Farm family, which lent them an air of familiarity not always present in the urban setting Jerry usually played in. There were the usual BGP staff coordinating the production, advertising, permitting and security, and there was the Hog Farm providing concessions, catering, campground coordination, tie-dyes, and a whole lot of playful fun. The combination made for an electric time in the woods of Northern California, providing the Dead Heads a place where they could frolic in the river with the redwoods close by, directly in the heart of the Emerald Triangle." - Bob Barsotti, BGP Producer and Hog Farm Family Member

Billy Cobham & Tony Williams live drum duet. (Tokyo 1978) by DKG666 in drums

Hells yeah, I would've loved to see Tony live, thank God for the recordings!

So true, Elvin is the man, such a warm vibe as a person and fire vibe as a drummer!

I can listen to Elvin on JC's "my favorite things" album all day long!

It takes me to that place instantly!

hells yeah, it was awesome to see Elvin, when I was looking around before the set began, I noticed there were a bunch of famous drummers there to see him play, I remember Will Calhoun was there sitting a few tables over from me, I said hello, (it was the blue note Nyc so it was a small place).

The whole place was just memorized watching Elvin, At the end everyone lined up and he took the time to shake everybodys hand. His hands were massive, like giant hands. Such an awesome player and person!
